  • This week, I'm trying another historical cold cream recipe. Well technically I'm blending two recipes together: one from the 1920s and another from the Edwardian period. It is a rich, silky cream with a sweet rose scent. Perfect for chapped winter hands or as a rich body lotion (it can be used on the face too if you like a heavier moisturizer or just use a small dab). Hope my mom likes her Christmas gift!

    Recipe Notes:
    - If you can't find a decent vanilla essential oil, an alternative is to create an infused vanilla oil instead using the almond oil and a vanilla bean (Mountain Rose Herbs has a great tutorial for a few methods of infusing oils: blog.mountainroseherbs.com/making-herbal-oils)
    - If you wish to omit the almond oil (for a nut allergy or other reason), any liquid oil may be swapped in. Olive oil is a good alternative, or try grapeseed oil for a lighter version of the cream.
    - If you don't like the vanilla-rose combo, you may swap in 10 drops of any skin-safe essential oil(s) of your choosing. Peppermint or eucalyptus might be nice for a "snow cream". If playing with the scent, you may wish to use a plain distilled water instead of the rose water.
    - To make the recipe slightly "snowier", use a white beeswax or add in some white pigment.
    - If you don't like glycerin, it can be omitted or swapped with more rose water. The glycerin helps to hold moisture to the skin but it does change the "finish"/feel of the cream slightly (some historical recipes I've tried with lots of glycerin are unbearably sticky, although that isn't an issue with this one! ).

I think some of those sticky recipes are primer for powders. I sometimes wear rose glycerin (£3 on amazon) for makeup primer. It works.

My brain is still recovering from an excess of Excel tables at work today, but here's a comment for the algorithm anyway 💜

Getting my notification of a new video from you is always the best part of my day. It's such a special tradition that you have of making your mother a homemade Christmas gift every year. I also remember the year you bought her that beautiful tablecloth that you use over the Holidays. I cherish my own 'Kate' recipes that you gift us year-round 🎁 😊

I don't know if this has been answered already but how does it hold up? There's no emulsifier, so the beeswax should separate from the glycerin and rose water..

Is the need for a preservative due to the addition of water in this recipe? Could one forego the use of rose water and opt out of the need for preserving? Thank you.

"Vanilla Rose Snow Cream" is such a delightful idea! (It even sounds like a delicious ice cream flavor I'd want to try.)
Even though it may get tedious for you after making so many cold cream videos, I appreciate too that you always carefully include all important details in each one, like how to calculate the amount of preservative to add.
Always a great format and ideas! Your videos definitely brighten my day. 😊

Another great video! You should put together a book of all the recipes you use on your channel. Including your creative alternatives. I know they are free on your channel but I for one would love to buy them as a book

It looks lovely. I might try to make some for myself because I adore old fashioned cold creams. They have been a game changer for my acne prone skin. Your labels are so beautiful too ❤️

how would rosehip oil work as a sub for almond?

Any liquid oil that works well for your skin can be substituted for the almond oil.

I think that it would be a waste because Rosehip oil is really beneficial when left to penetrate into the skin because of vitamin A. Jojoba is a better choice
