Because you just grew apart? Cheating and betrayal aren’t the only reasons why someone would break up. Over time you get to know someone and you realise you’re not compatible so instead you break up and look for someone who fits you better. When you stay friends it just means that you still enjoy being around them or talking to them from time to time otherwise you wouldn’t have gotten with them in the first place if you hated everything about them, unless you’re one of those people that date solely based on looks and not personality.
honestly sometimes people just grow apart and have different interests. you learn that you each have individual goals and expectations for the future that don't line up with each other. for example you want to move across the world to another country for your career but your partner wants to stay in their small hometown, etc things like that. you can still be friends with them because they're a good person and you had fun with them but you're just not meant to be.
Unless kids are involved I don't get it either. But I fall deeply in love when I do and can't turn it off so it would be tremendously hard for me to stay friends and watch them be with someone else.
