Big Mama is a more senior group compared to the ones that are popular these days (not just age-wise but also in the music industry, having debuted in 2003). Back when kpop was starting to gain its foothold, these ladies were already a force to be reckoned with. Lee Young Hyun released a solo album and "Resignation" was her signature track. They disbanded around 2012 and only got together again for a comeback last year. Their new track, One Day, is also a lovely piece.
Big Mama is Korea's most legendary group. They are now teaching students as practical music university professors. It's amazing that Joe's songs were about 20 years ago.
Big Mama group debuted in 2003, disbanded in 2012, and reunited this time. And each member is currently working as a practical music professor at various universities. (The last song in the video is a new song)
Korean age From L - R Shin Yeon-ah (49) Lee Ji-young (43) Lee Young-hyun (41) Park Min-hye (40) In 2012, the group Big Mama was disbanded and each member is serving as a practical music professor at several universities. And fans of Big Mama, who made a comeback in 2021, liken Big Mama to idols and call them professors dols.🤓
Thank you for reacting to them! This group is a gem, their voices and technique are so different but they blend so beautifully. Full names in Korean are read so that the family name is first. So Lee Ji-young(middle-left), Lee is her last/family name. For those who don't know their names from L-R: Shin Yeon-ah, Lee Ji-young, Lee Young-hyun, Park Min-hye.
I know this video is old but for anyone who is watching still I just wanted explain that the song that Lee Young-hyun sang was a song she actually wrote and is considered her solo song, which was included in as a special track on the group's album at the time. It is one of the TOP songs that Korean ppl sing in karaoke for 15 straight years since its release (yes, we track this). It's considered one of the hardest songs to sing and she supposedly wrote this song when she was in college after she broke up with her boyfriend at the time after locking herself in the music rooms at her college for three days. It's about the last phone call you have with your ex and in some performances you can see her still get very emotional (as she did in the Killing Voice towards the end of the song).
33:22 I couldnt stress this enough! The average listener hears amazing music, and musicians really hear EVERY layer and note. Which is why I like watching musicians react because they know how truly hard or amazing something sounds.
The intermittent "breaks" in Shin's voice at the beginning of the second song appear carefully planned. If you see the lyrical content, you will see why. Shin is the most interesting of the bunch. She sounds like a classic jazz vocalist. She also does most of the arrangements and is the leader. Most of the time, the eldest is the leader by default in Korean culture, but Shin is the leader on merit.
If I am not mistaken, the group was created around Shin Yeon-ah who was already pretty established as a chorus artist singing background for many Korean artists like Psy.
Love this group, I'm so excited for their comeback. It's a testament to their technique that they've been able to maintain their voices through the years and their blend as a group. Also FYI in Korean (same as Japanese and Chinese) they typically have their surname first, so Lee Young Hyun instead of Young Hyun Lee as it would be in English.
I have only seen the Big Mama and Mamamoo Killing Voice as well. It seems like a great way to introduce a group. From what I read they did this Killing Voice to show students(some or all of them are Professors) how its done, even a decade after they disbanded. BUT they did actually release a brand new song One More Day June 2021. This group really really knows how to sing, There are not many groups this good. They flew under my radar, back in 2003 to 2012 I was more into jpop, BoA was the only kpop I was a fan of but she has just as much Jpop. I got into kpop soon after Mamamoo and then Dreamcatcher came on the scene. Big Mama is mainly R&B and Soul, at least from the albums I have. They are closer to my age, mid and late 40s and only about 12 years older than the mamamoo members but both sound way better than your typical kpop 19 year old singer. It seems they are listed as active again, so perhaps there will be more from them. I will certainly listen.
Big Mama is the first female idol group that doesn't focus on looks. but focusing on their vocals but as you know An idol is a beautiful and handsome face with a good voice. Even though they have incredible talent in vocals. In the end, they did not live together for long. but their voices will remain forever.
Fun reaction. These ladies are impressive and I really enjoyed your thoughts on more experienced singers and how they are playing off of and with each other. Thanks for the video!
It's always good to see other musicians listening to my nation's artists' songs and tell how they feel and what they've heard. These ladies "Big mama" are one of those artists we korean feel so blessed that we could hear them during their glory days. Each and every one of them are professors and teaching vocalist students in different colleges. Hope you guys find more great foreign singers and do reactions like this. I'm definitely subscribing!
the singer who sang alone used to be the DIVA of Korea back in the days but you went through struggle losing her voice about a decade ago but you still can sing.
I’ve never met a person so critical of Lee Young Hyun. It almost seemed as if the teachers here needed to teach these legends rather than them being taught. Watch any of the vocal teachers reacting to Big Mama and you will see the vocal teachers here in comparison show pride and lack of respect for these masters or legends at what they do. The woman vocal teacher was saying Lee Young Hyun needed to show more teeth and was talking about her lack of vowels. C’mon now lol. I appreciated the guy vocal teacher a lot because he seemed more objective and explained things better. Regardless, as teachers, let’s show more humility.
finally someone who had the exact same thinking as me... some of the lady "teacher" comment made me roll my eyes... Commenting on a university professional in applied music and is 20 years older than her on her vowels and etc? I wish she stop trying to find things to say to make her sound "professional" and at every chance trying to show how she does it... 🤔
imo the teeth is just for brightness in the tone, which is debateable if needed. and her "held locked down" tone/shape really shines in her Forsake peformances where the sound just washes over you. you can really see the difference during Resignation when Mellia is singing too. she changes it accordingly as well, you can definately hear during Woman and ONe Day More the shape is changed so she can go higher I don't think they wre trying to be critical, but they did really go on about it until they clarified ( at the very end ...)
Chase gets this look on his face on a few and fairly rare occasions that I've noticed in multiple videos (I first noticed it in the initial Sohyang video) where I feel like he realizes he's hearing something really special vocal-wise and I see him put the magnifying glass down a bit and just enjoy what he's hearing and he looks so appreciative.
I love how well their voices blend in every possible combination. Each pairing or triplet has a unique timbre and they way they move between them is just stunning. Also, I really appreciate how in depth you guys get with these reactions. I'm learning so much!
I’m so glad you guys choice park as your favorite. I feel as though she is so underrated cause she isn’t at expressive or loud as the other singers are. But her voice is so pure(?) and so easy to listen to. So happy to hear your opiinion in this killing voice. You guys are doing great :)
I appreciate this review. I've seen many reactions of Big Mama Killing Voice and most people comment about Lee Young Hyun and Lee Ji Yong because they have very noticeable flair in high and low registers respectively but I personally think Shin Yeon Ah and Park Min Hye are super important to the group as center pieces. So you pointing out Park Min Hye's vocal qualities here was super nice!! I love all of them and listening to your commentaries was super enlightening too.
TRUUEEEEE, I LOVE THEM!!! Ms Lee Young Hyun introduced me to their group, but Ms Lee Ji Young got my 💖. I think Ms Park Mi Hye tends to be overlooked at times but I really admire how she can shine and operate in different genres especially in english songs. And of course, the unforgettable ace, Ms Shin Yeon Ah! ❤️
I discovered Big Mama, only last year during the lock down. I'm in love with the singing talents of these wonderfully talented & skilled women. I've watched many reactions to this clip. But yours I'm really enjoying and the comments you're making from a technical perspective I'm finding refereshing. You Listen to vocals the way I listen to fellow bass players. Really enjoying your comments. One of the things I'm enjoying about watching your reaction, is that because you do listen technically, you can see when you're caught by surprise. P.S (edit) I love their charming relaxed playfulness with their art and each other. It displays a settled and experienced confidence in their ability, and the abilities of each other.
The first song in this video reminds me heavily of Toni Braxton from the 1990's. One of these ladies appeared in a Black-and-White music video for Mamamoo's debut song, Mr. Ambiguous. It was awesome!
All of these songs were huge hits in Korea at the time. Especially the last song, it's always on the top chart of karaoke. (Even now!) So happy to listen to these songs with everyone here♥
I heard they used to be chorus singers for other singers for years and then go out together and came out with their own albums. They were really popular long time ago.
2 things- 1 LOVED 11:53 Melia casually saying she agrees w/Chase cus she thinks she already knows what hes gona say and Chase smiling 😂 uguys r too cute. 2 LOVED seeing ur smiles watching Big Mama harmonize; it made me feel happy like seeing a teacher smile with content watching the perfect execution of a craft 👌👍
If you want to hear more of Mamamoo's fantastic vocals and particularly more harmonisation, then consider reacting to their immortal song performances where they take a Korean classic and remaster it. These performances are mind-blowing and really highlight Mamamoo's insane range of genres and teamwork.
Happy new year Chase and Melia! Loving the blossoming of your sense of humor in your videos. The "Big Mama" joke at the beginning was just laugh out loud ! 😁😁😁
Happy New Year!!! The New Year song for you! Diana Ankudinova - What a Wonderful World The reaction bloggers have already called this cover the best performance of this legendary Louis Armstrong song! some of them are vocal teachers ehehe they came back because of of a variety show that was looking for male vocal group... how do you play msg wannabe... they sang her song .. so thats why ppl are listening to their songs again... they're realllyyy good !!!!!
You explained it in simple way. Although I am not interested become a singer, I love watch vocal coach reaction. Do not afraid to show the imperfection of the artist because they are human, but do it in polite way. Some fans think their artist or idol are prefect. But I assume people who watch vocal coach reaction are someway want to know about vocal technique.
Just wanted to let you guys know, I loved you’re reaction and hearing your opinion and perspective on this group. I’d also like to mention in Korea the last names come before their given names. So names like Lee, Park, Kim and so on are usually their family names. This isn’t a very good explanation so everyone please add on or correct me if I’m wrong. any way for me to improve this explanation is welcomed!!
lee young hyun, if youve ever heard her from back then, she sang and belted a lot with her throat.... and she changed her singing technique after getting vocal cord nodules. even around 2012ish when she went out on a show "i am a singer 2", she still had problem with her vocal cord nodules. but seems like she finally was able to heal and fix it!!!! im super glad she did
Hi, thanks for the video. I would like to see your reaction to the wonderful singer Diana Ankudinova. She is still young, but her performances amaze people from all over the world.
I suppose the reason why Lee suppressed her voice and expression was because of the meaning and lyrics of the song. Enjoyed your reaction a lot! looking forward to watching the second one. Thanks
Can I suggest/request you do Lee Hi’s Killing Voice? She’s a really unique Korean R&B singer. She has so much character and I’ve never seen a vocal coach react to her voice. I’d love to see you guys break down her voice for me 😊
They were so great and had such cool voices. I truly think It would be amazing to see you guys reaction to Ana & Jorge Ao Vivo ( I don't imagine you could possibly do the whole concert, so I personally recommend Seu Jorge - Tive Razão. Ana Carolina, Seu Jorge - É isso Aí. Ana Carolina, Seu Jorge - Chatterton. Ana Carolina - Garganta. All performances from the concert, is all available on UA-cam) They are both amazing Brazilian singers that I grew up listening to and they never stop amazing me with their voices.
I would agree with you guys that Park has so much potential to perform with other genres and more over, Korean people recognize that her voice is more trendy and easy to listen.

They have a new song "Like Nothing Happened"

Min-Hye is a babe
Minhye look so good at 40 😍
Its funny when u guys giving advice to these girls, its like student giving advice to teacher
Right? Literally, since they are music professors :DDD
Hahaha seems like a little bit of jealousy from the lady but the guy is cool.
Thank you for reacting to them! This group is a gem, their voices and technique are so different but they blend so beautifully.

Son Seung Yeon is a singer I really recommend you guys reacting to. She has vocals for days. Her singing Lost love on immortal song is just amazing!
Yaaas! She's killing everything she sings
You both are just so wonderful to watch. Your positivity and enthusiasm is something else to learn from these videos. Thank you for your great videos!

You have hardly heard a voice of such rare beauty in your life. Enjoy!
She is called the queen of goosebumps, a unique voice - contralto with polyphonic overtones. Full vocal range - 4 octaves (E3-E7).

She's killing every single performance. Lost love is my fave as well. She just returned to Masked singer with Wind song :)
I was waiting for this reaction 👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻☺️
The last song is titled "Resignation" in English. It's her song and one of the most famous in Korea. There are two tremendous version by Morisette.

This isn’t a very good explanation so everyone please add on or correct me if I’m wrong. any way for me to improve this explanation is welcomed!!
Pls there is part2!!
Congratulations
lee young hyun, if youve ever heard her from back then, she sang and belted a lot with her throat.... and she changed her singing technique after getting vocal cord nodules. even around 2012ish when she went out on a show "i am a singer 2", she still had problem with her vocal cord nodules. but seems like she finally was able to heal and fix it!!!! im super glad she did
Hi, thanks for the video. I would like to see your reaction to the wonderful singer Diana Ankudinova. She is still young, but her performances amaze people from all over the world.
They are Four Korean Mommy, Four voice Professor.
Finally!!! I will see this video again and again for sure. Thank u guys!! And congrats for the baby, big mama🥰🥰🥰
Yes..the immortal Big Mama. The elder vocal Queens.
Random note, but they've been adding subtitles to these videos! Both Mamamo's and this one had them added sometime in the last couple months.
you have to react full version.... please~~
This is too shortttttt. Please do a full reaction on them 😭😭
빅마마♥
All of them are music professors now :)
I’d love to see you guys break down her voice for me 😊
YESSS!! i give u no skip ads!!
Yess! Next do Ailee killing voice 🙏🏽
react to WHERE ARE WE NOW from MAMAMOO!!!! It's more singing and it's super super good. In that song you can hear their voices a lot more. PLEEEASE🙏🙏
Lee Young Hyun 25:43 i think that was the song Morissette sang on a Korean festival, and it was translated in English
I would agree with you guys that Park has so much potential to perform with other genres and more over, Korean people recognize that her voice is more trendy and easy to listen.
