    What’s confusing/missing from this video is that the installation of the new seal ring can be tricky if you don’t realize the plastic piece where the seal ring is placed onto has a top and bottom groove… and the seal should be installed in the TOP groove (I think it is more intuitive to erroneously think the seal ring belongs on the bottom groove where it can seat against the tank’s black seal). At 1:40, the new seal ring is shown already installed in the correct location, without the specifics of how it got there, and what the top and bottom grooves look like. A great video showing the details of this critical step is from 0:45 - 1:10 of UA-cam video “Mansfield 630 0030”.
    Otherwise, this is a nicely made video showing the essential steps of the remaining job.

      Thank you so soooo very much for this piece of the installation. I was so disappointed not to see how to do this in the video because I have no clue what I'm doing. I'll go look at the other video. The nice thing about this video is it's the exact same toilet parts I have whereas other videos show different parts.

    Super helpful! Saved me hundreds on a new toilet and installation. All it took was a new rubber ring to fix the leak exactly like this video showed. The advice to seat the ring flat in the first groove saved the day.

    We have 5 identical toilets like this - all but one always took a ton of force to flush - broke the handle once. I was ready to junk the toilet. Never thought something as simple as the seal would cause this.

    What a great video! Is there part number for this gasket at Home Depot or will they know it's for a Mansfield toilet? Also, I need to replace that part the screws in and holds the refill tube. Are these available somewhere? Thanks.

      I think I can help! The Home Depot part numbers for a flush valve gasket (red/pink ring) is Model # 88096 Store SKU #1000055028. I also have a video showing a full toilet rebuild that you may need for your additional parts. ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=Czxv1DwWB-M

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  8 років тому

      Make sure the seal is properly seated in the very top groove of the lower assembly. I had this happen as well. I adjusted the seal and it worked properly after a couple of full flushes. Hold down the handle for a few seconds for a couple of flushes.

    Thank you so much for explaining and showing how the gasket should sit properly. I saw another video that didn't explain it well so I assumed it was supposed to go around and I stretched the gasket to do so. Put everything back and ended up with a leaky toilet 😑. Found your video and you explained how it's done with such great detail, redid it how you showed/explained and voilà!! A properly fixed toilet that flushes with ease and no leak. Thank you so much! 😊

    This video was spot on. I especially appreciated the tips about wearing latex gloves to avoid black hands, putting the gasket in the upper groove, and of course the reminder to turn the water off first. I was already pretty handy with basic toilet repair on older toilets, but this was totally new to me on my first Mansfield. And it really did take only 5 minutes. Easy peasy. Yet I somehow feel very accomplished. THANKS for doing a short but thorough video.

NOTE,, be sure the seal can easily hand turn in position to affirm proper installation.. Thanks Bro.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  7 років тому

      Ven Adkins The red ring replacement makes it easier to flush. Once the seal wears out the cup sits too low on it which causes it to be hard to flush because of the suction it adds.

      NurseToi G You can try adjusting the blue part so that it sits lower in the tank. You should be able to adjust it using the threads but the easiest way is just to bend the metal rod a little bit.

    Hate to sound like an idiot, but I am an idiot when it comes to this stuff so here goes...I replaced what you did and man the old ring was badly beat up but... but I am having the same problem as before where it's always running. The issue is at the top, there is always water running into the top part (right below the part you unlocked to in the beginning- right below where the little hose goes). So the water level doesn't stop below where the water can overflow into that part. Thoughts?

    Wow, this is a helpful and amazing What a headache this toilet has been for us in the last 5 years. We have had to repair this area (LEAKING WATER ISSUE) at least three times. I feel ignorant that one of us had not tried to find a video, such as yours, The reason I feel ignorant is, because my other half and I would go to parts store and buy that whole piece in center, that includes the gasket you showed, instead of researching first.. AND to top to off my other half would remove the WHOLE TANK to repair it, because he did not know better. THEN the removal of the tank ADDED MORE leaking issues. What a headache. So I have reached the point of simply wanting to replace the whole toilet. CAN ANYONE tell me how I can find the DATE the mansfield was made? In other words, how old is my mansfield toielt?

In fact, it is now leaking so fast that, although I can see and hear that there is water flowing, the tank isn't filling. Any tips? Is is possible that the new ring I got is defective?

    • @TightWadDIY

      Jason Roy At least the flush lever is cheap! You should be hack up and running for less than $10!

    Thank you! we are also having the issues with the toilet continuing to run (we have a Mansfield- same model as this video). The ball never gets to the level for the toilet to stop running. Any suggestions? Thanks!

      You can bend the rod that holds the ball so it sits lower in the tank.

    you choose the wrong handle . for a mansfeild get the one with the metlal rod

    • @TightWadDIY

      Thanks. This is a friend's toilet and he had already purchased and installed the replacement handle before he called me. I let him know that the metal ones are better but this one will suffice for now. As long as the flush seal ring is in good shape, the plastic handles work fine.

      the plastic handle is great for tanks that have flappers

    Can you tell me why it might still be leaking after replacing the valve? It continues to constantly run after flushing. The water level continues to slowly decrease in the tank with a new valve. Could the water level be too high in the tank? These videos are also really helpful. I appreciate it!

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  6 років тому

      Jason Rudder you must not have the pink ring seated properly. It should be at the very top lip of the valve it sits on. There is a groove just under the very top lip that it has to be in and it should be laying flat after you put it in that groI’ve. If you think it is already in the correct groove, reach down and Spin the pink ring just a little bit to help it seat properly. I had the same issue on one I fixed and spinning or turning the ring a little helped it sit completely in the groove and stopped the leak.

    • @TightWadDIY
      @TightWadDIY  6 років тому

      Jason Rudder The other thing that may be causing this is having your float set too high. There is a screw where the float rod connects to the flush valve. Adjust the screw to make the float sit lower in the tank.

    • @jocean23
      @jocean23 6 років тому

      TightWadRepairs Thanks! I know the seal is seated but will try to spin it. I think it has to do with the float being set too high. I noticed I had to push the flush valve float down a little to get it to stop the leak. It's not sitting tightly on the valve. Could that be because the float is too high?

      This helped me too! Thanks! This saved me hundreds from almost calling in a plumber. Im not sure how adjusting the ball cock screw on the fill valve helped, but im happy.
