    In this tutorial, I'll show you how to case bind a hardcover book. I've found there are many variations of case binding methods. None are necessarily better than others, they are just slightly different and up to your personal preference. This is what has worked for me so far, but I'm always learning. You're welcome to make your own variations based on my tutorial to suite your own preference.

    • Text block (already made): bit.ly/TextBlock
    • Board*: amzn.to/2rwzAKb (can also recycle back of paper pads)
    • Book cloth (paper will work too): bit.ly/VBU6pI

    ❋ IMPORTANT TIP ❋
    Whatever material you use for the cover (fabric or paper), if it is really thick, you should add the width of it (ex. 2mm) to the "gap width". This will compensate for the thickness and allow the cover to still hang over the text block.

    Hi Sea Lemon. I just wanted to let you know that I actually completed my first hardcover book, that is, a journal, thanks to you! I completed it on Mar. 26 and it took me (on and off) 1 week after I got the cutting boards. It came out really nice (if I may say so myself) with the exception that despite my exact measurements, the end pages didn't quite reach the 1/8 inch from the edge of the cover (it was further away). Nevertheless, it came out great, with fabric cloth cover (I used fabric interfacing and it worked great!). I didn't put my photo on the cover, but I did a spiral notepad and put my lamented photos on it. But it was a struggle using a hole punch. I must buy the Japanese screw punch then it will be perfectly aligned (the holes). So thank you so much for all your tutorials and your inspiration. Hope to hear from you. Ciao!

      ***** Hi Sea Lemon! Thanks for replying! Yep, I am very please with my 1st (and hardcover) book! However, I can't say the same regarding the spiral notepads I've made so far. Since I don't have the Japanese screw punch (which I ordered today), the holes on the pages don't line up no matter how precise I am. Plus, the spiral gets all wonky and it's very frustrating. Also, I discovered that if I add a photo (using photo paper) on top of the cover cardboard, it MUST be thinner than the cardboard since it warps the cover if it's too thick (which happened already). So, I've decided to either use thinner photo paper or just buy the book board. Any suggestions I'll appreciate them. Thanks again for everything! Ciao!

    Fits well into my space, I painted the back green. It's very easy to customize just the back if that's something you want to do. I would suggest sanding it first before painting, I got a little impatient. The shelves ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxM8H4CjCb79vzeyvgaFMdzmLm88oVFPMkare pretty small so keep that in mind if you're going to have it horizontal that some books won't fit. I like the snug look that it has. Good small shelf if you don't have much space, but not too small. Simple to put together, though you'll need your own tools, a screwdriver and a mallet/hammer, it's easiest to do with another person.

      The rather lower educated americans use inch and farenheit (highschool). But at least when working with american engineers they know about the SI and how much it is superior to this rather ... well, idiotic approach to temperature, length etc.

    • @mintbrownieangelfish-6114
      @mintbrownieangelfish-6114 4 роки тому +45

      @@markfrinch7865 It's not just 'lower educated'. We are taught the metric system in elementary school. We just don't often use it outside of scientific field, and if you never need it, it goes away. Weather channels never use Celsius in the US, but we learned to convert Celsius and Fahrenheit in middle school. There's nothing wrong with the imperial system and it's not accurate to say everyone who uses it is uneducated. That's rediculous.

    • @jamestrebilcock8310
      @jamestrebilcock8310 4 роки тому +2

      The imperial measurement system is superior. Those are freedom units. When the French learn how to win a war Americans can learn their inferior measurement system.

    • @UNR3S7
      @UNR3S7 4 роки тому +11

      @@markfrinch7865 it may surprise you, but imperial isn't like objectively inferior to metric and it wasn't invented by idiots, it was invented by people who did a craft as a profession. Metric is better for science because of easy conversions when dealing with a lot of different units (eg: when dealing with volume, energy, and mass at the same time) and for things that require written math.
      But imperial units are more easy to estimate and are approximately scaled to our bodies and the things we actually use, and fractions and things with factors of 2,4,3,6,12 are easier to work with in your head.
      A way of measuring temperature isn't better because it is based on the boiling and freezing point of water rather than the range that humans sense as being cold or hot, and a way of measuring distance isn't better because it is based on the distance from the earth to the moon instead of approximate finger segment length and the amount of steps it takes to cover a distance. They are good for different purposes

    • @markfrinch7865
      @markfrinch7865 4 роки тому +8

      @@UNR3S7 No, sorry to say, but you are wrong. Si is far superior, exactly because it is first of all defined by natural accurances that are reproducable - Farnheit is not, inch is not.
      Yes, it is also far superior in the most important part: application, conversion. It follows the logic of the decimal system and is thus easy to learn and apply. Period.
      That is why all engineers, physicists and mathematics around the globe use it. Prove enough. Sorry to break your world view.

    I wanted to thank you for teaching me how to make very cool hardcover books, from start to finish. My better 3/4 and I are both fountain pen enthusiasts. There are some very nice papers like Tomoe River paper from Japan. Your video series about bookbinding has me constructing writing books for us and for gifts using that paper. Now we are not limited to size nor page count. Oh, and a hearty thank you for the tutorial on DIY book cloth, which opens up so many possibilities. Your presentation style and pacing is a professional as anything out there. 😀

Another video you can check out is "DIY Decorate Notebooks & Folders" in my "Back to School" playlist. That has some other methods you can use on your book covers. Hope that helps!

    Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I've been making my own sketchbooks for years now and I always watch this video first to make sure I don't forget any of the details. Recently I've also incorporated the tearing of the watercolor paper instead of cutting it, to get those nice deckled edges. It's also a lot easier on the hands, I only have to cut the boards for the cover.

    These last 2 days I've made a couple of miniature hard cover books using this tutorial! I kept a very rustic style for the first one and left the pages uneven, but the second one is very neat. I'll definitely keep on practicing book binding of different sorts, I've loved books as objects and I've been looking forward to learn how to make them. I was looking for courses but I could not find any, I'm glad I found your channel :)

    Hi! Thanks for an amazing vid, making a book with slimmer spine wondering if the gap between always has to be 1/4 inch? Thanks :)

    +Sea Lemon This is so helpful! I never imagined I could make something like this from home! Is it possible to use a text block made using perfect binding for the hardcover book?

    Love the videos! Just gave this a try, but found that the spacing between the sections of the cover were way too big for the text-block I made, so the thing wouldn't close and I ended up tearing it. Do you have a formula for how wide the gaps between the front and back cover and the spine should be, depending on the number of signatures in your text-block? For this project, I only have 4-6 signatures, and it seems like it might be better to just go without a spine entirely, and maybe just re-enforce the back with some gaze. What do you think?

    I always used my college txtbooks as weights for anything too... So when I saw that she used them as well, I screamed "I CAN RELATE!!" lol

    When you say you can cover it in fabric or paper is that the same process for paper? I can glue all pieces of chipboard to the card-stock and it’ll work?

    Hi Sea Lemon. Great video! I have a question: do you have any methods to make more durable covers? I am a menber of a choir and our choirbooks are hardly dameged: the front and back covers are seperated from the edge. Do you know how to make them last longer (maybe with better glue or bookcloth from linen)?

    I want to make a reusable padded cover/jacket for paperbacks- do recommend 4mm foamboard or 3mm and do i need to attack it to a coverboard or can i use fabric? I want to make a soft and omfy to hold cover. Thanks for any tips and 4 making this vid!

    Thanks for the excellent tutorial! It has inspired me to start some projects of my own. Question: is the spine glued also to the spine board ? In the tutorial, it looks as if you've only glued the endpapers

      +chica418 Thanks! The spine of the text block is not glued to the spine cover board.

    I had made one notebook following this video and came out perfect, However I am doing another and I don't know what I am doing wrong this time but I have had to start over several times because the book isn't fitting in the spine area! any suggestions? it just buckles and the paper doesn't extend all the way to the boarder if that makes sense?
