Thank you for sharing this, Hoang! I am an OT student and quite a bit of an introvert. So, it is a bit difficult for me to know how to employ therapeutic use of self. I would love to see more videos on this topic. I really appreciate it!
Thanks for watching. Being introverted is totally ok! TUS actually has nothing to do with that...it’s just about connecting with the people you are helping. Just be yourself and make the therapy sessions about them :) you can actually see me using a lot of TUS threaded in a lot of my training videos.
Knowing WHEN to use certain aspects of therapeutic use of self is essential to success. Sometimes therapeutic touch, sometimes humor, sometimes active listening.
what if im not naturally funny? I'm quite introverted and a lot of the time i notice with patients we have a lot of silence, or i just have conversations but they're usually quite 'serious' and not just random humour or funny observations. I'm not much of a story teller, when I'm with my friends I wouldn't usually tell funny stories anyways to be honest. What should i do in this situation?
It’s okay. You can only be yourself. But here’s the thing. Introverts and extroverts is all about how you recharge your energy. Being shy is a choice. You can talk to your patients and think about them and ask them questions to get to know what’s important to them. As a person and as it pertains to therapy. Hope that helps.

Yes! Therapeutic use of self is complex because people are complex. Thanks for your comment.
