  • Following the successful "25 Years of Match of the Day" series, BBC Video now offers a modern day history of famous clubs seen through the programme's lens since 1964. Ipswich Town were a strong Second Division side under the auspices of Bill McGarry when Match of the Day cameras first came to Portman Road. In 1969, he was succeeded by Bobby Robson, a manager who was to transform the Club into a highly respected First Division outfit.
Certainly viewers were treated to some memorable football by a side that flourished during his managerial reign.
With players like Mick Mills, John Wark, Paul Mariner and the great Dutch pairing of Thijssen and Muhren, Robson led the club to their most sustained period of success; winning the FA Cup in 1978, twice championship runners-up and landing the UEFA Cup in 1981.
This superb video captures some of the great memories over the years and features some of the favourites that have graced Portman Road: Viljoen, Whymark, Gates, Cooper, Mariner, Wark, not to forget the man whose goal won the Cup in 1978: Roger Osborne.

THIS is why Ipswich Town are, have always been and always will be the Pride of EAST ANGLIA. Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson's blue and white army.

Brilliant montage of Town over the years, bringing back so many happy memories. Growing up in the '70's/80's, I was the only Town fan in a school of 1200 where the vast majority supported the London teams - the Monday after '78 Cup Final, I wore my blue and white scarf all day under my school jumper; a couple of teachers noticed but just smiled or winked as they knew what it meant. Had many a visit to Portman Road during that time as my close relatives were Town season ticket holders so when on hols in Suffolk used to go with them, ,and when at Uni in London, as Liverpool Street station was a 10 min walk from my Halls of Residence, tried to go as much as often. One of the best memories, not on this video, was Town getting promoted to the PL in May 2000. Very fortunate, through my work, to be at the old Wembley in an Exec Box next to one with Barnsley fans, Michael Parkinson and Dickie Bird. Had a beer with them after and what gentleman they were wishing Town all the best - real old school. Even the trip on the tube back into Central London, got drunk with the Barnsley fans themselves - true football supporters. Thank you for posting this, truly made this old Tractor Boy misty eyed at times but couldn't have enjoyed it more.

Marvellous. I was at (boarding) school on 6/5/78 and although an exeat, was forbidden by my parents to go. A more senior housemate went (Arsenal fan and very gracious when he came back with programme). Wore my scarf to bed on the Friday and then under my uniform on the day as felt it had to be touching my skin all day from midnight or the spell would break. Was there in 2000 as well - behind glass (only tickets left). Live in France now and on the way back in 10 days but just back from Sugar Town where I lived (and still have many friends) and from where we skipped over to PR for the Saints game. Fortunate to be still in it at half time but hey, as good as it gets in the end...

Ipswich Town were a founding member/ club in the premiership, they have a rich history and its worth remembering, for England fans the only manager for England to win the world cup in 1966, was Alf Ramsay the ex Ipswich manager recruited for the job. That said, that's history... but raise this as there is a culture of success at the club, the flip-side many lean years through lack of investment. Ipswich may claim the Premiership is where they belong, which requires a focused team and management, hard work, talent and investment. The latter is vital, Ipswich Town owners in the US have stated they are committed to invest funds to have them back in the Premiership. A fine start at recovery has been made, lets hope based on results the US owners will stand by their investment commitment 😅

@@akickinthegrass1636 My mate brought it from the Ipswich club shop on the day Ipswich lost 4-2 in the FA Cup q/f in March 1993, so it was around then (and clearly after beating Leeds in October 1992)
