- Some footage from The Big Match episode shown 40 years ago today, as Brian Moore introduces highlights of the dramatic Ipswich v Man United match played the previous day (1st March 1980) and Ipswich manager Bobby Robson gives a post-match interview. As Moore says at the start: "If you don't know the score, I can tell you you'll hardly believe your eyes."

In the early 80s, Ipswich were a terrific team that finished in the top 3 on 3 occasions
Super performance from Bobby Robson's Ipswich-nightmare for Man.Utd. Great names- Paul Mariner, Alan Brazil, Eric Gates. Thanks
for coverage.
Probably the most inept performance by Manchester United ever.
Incredible to believe that it's 40 years since Ipswich demolished United 6-0
R.i.p paul
That team starting to go now Bobby Robson bobby Ferguson' Kevin Beattie paul MARINER RIP 🚜🚜🚜
My mate was watching his dad play and remembers hearing the six nil and was celebrating until he got home and found out it wasn't his beloved UNITED who had got the six.😃
To be fair this was a cracking team Robson put together
They were awesome!
Great memories, in the 70s we beat Man Utd 4-0 4-1 3-0 and 3-0
Paul Mariner, Kevin Beattie RIP xx
Ipswich well kicked ass in those daze
The goods old days
Back when we were good 😊 coyb💙🤍🚜🚜
They haven’t done so badly, the last couple of years!
Proper football before the antics started.
I was in the North Stand for this one and remember the game well, particularly for Mariner's hatrick and the penalty saves by Bailey. The Man U defence was terrible and we really should have had 10 gials
Those last three goals were dire from United's point of view.
The score what matters 🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
When this was a working class game
Happy days
This could have easily been double figures if you add up the penalties and goal line clearances
Question, did the tv shows call the whole game and then just chop it up in this highlight type fashion?
This was “The Big Match” ITV equivalent of BBCs “Match Of The Day” It was a highlights programme shown on a Sunday Lunchtime.
Yes, they commentated on the whole game and chopped it up, but occasionally this led to cutting to the middle of a sentence or similar difficulties so the commentator had to hang around in case they needed overdubs. Much easier to do on the Sunday afternoon programmes like this one, compared to Match of the Day.
Man Utd must have been on the drink the night before
So were Ipswich when man United beat US in 1994 NINE NIL 🤣🤣🤣🚜🚜🚜
@@nickmullerITFC78 Err, do English often? 🙄

Bailey wears no gloves, even though good gloves were available by now.
John Walk!? Lol
Two scummy budgies thumbs down
This is the Alan Brazil we thought we were getting in 1984 not the one we actually got. Where injuries had taken away the strength and pace he had here. Shocking game from us, I don’t know what happened. It could have been worse!! Bailey doesn’t save the 2 penalties, bloody hell !!
I think Brazil would've been a United legend but for his injuries. Big Ron should've known he was a shadow of what he had been before he bought him from Tottenham.
Also, if John Wark had been playing it could've been ten plus.
Was there at Portman Road on this wonderful day as an Ipswich fan. Just a wonderful team built by the great Sir Bobby Robson & seeing Paul Mariner's hat-trick, it is quite sad in light of his recent demise.
The good old days of television footage 👍😀
It could have been 8-0 had it not been for Gary Bailey, who was not to blame for any of the goals.
Sir Bobby Robson would have been a good choice for United manager in 1981.
Paul Mariner 🪦 RIP
Our best ever number 9 no one will be better 🚜🚜🚜🚜🚜
The famous SIX NIL game that shut man United up 🚜🚜🚜🤣🤣
@NICK MULLER
You know they beat us 9-0 in the 90’s so I wouldn’t brag about the 6-0 lol
@@JackSmith-kp2vs they keep taking about 9 nil match its the first thing they say when u say I support ipswich 🚜🚜🚜🔵⚪️
Ipswich had a great side then,I could watch them every day! Deserved to win the league. This was a masterclass of a display. Amen.
One of the most inept United performances in decades.
the forest home in 77 also
red flag Oh god yeah I was there for that, demolished United 4-0 if I remember correctly.
@@glenjarnold haha great response ye not at that myself but bad day
Ipswich totally out played you.
Jenny GW Have to agree.
My mum used to put my panini stickers of gates,Mariner and Brazil on the mantlepiece to keep us away from the fire.
😂 That's a great joke mate. 10/10
Old ones are the best mate!
My favourite Ipswich performance of all time
Bailey saving three penalties in a row 😮😮😮
How were Man U only 2 points off the top with that performance? Shocker🤣
The great Gerry Harrison
6-0?😂😂😂
Love it!
They had a few off days 1978 man united 0 nott,m forest 4 ,1990 liverpool 4 man united 0 2009 man united 1 liverpool 4 2020 man united 1 spurs 6 2021 leicester 3 man united 1 in f a cup my home knocking out the f,a cup yeah
@Cris Lehmann You remember all Uniteds biggest league defeats since the 70s? Wow! That is so sad! So very very sad.
@@mars7934 Why is that sad? I:m a football fan. I remember every big game, every World Cup score since 82, every Euros since 80, every Champions League final since 70. Its basic football knowledge any decent fan knows.
@@christopherlehmann4392 Alright I get it you're a football encyclopaedia! My point was why would you memorise Man Utds biggest league defeats but not, lets say, Evertons or Aston Villas? I assume you're not a United fan? Therefore its a bit sad that you hate on one club so much that you relish their poor results over a 50 year period!
And by the way The Champions League started in 1992 rebranded from the old European Cup competition. Basic football knowledge dear boy ;-)
27th January 1980: Hajduk Split 6 United 0 (They scored two penalties)
1st March 1980: Ipswich Town 6 United 0 (They miss two penalties)
Identical abject displays; the first one had us being asked if we'd sent our reserve team.
Did this poor kid Sloan ever play again?
@@Spectrescup Unfortunately, yes. Though only as a sub; this match was his last start.
He and Tom Connell were hopelessly our of their depth at OT.
Let us see the 9-0 game now. 😁
Keeper saves 3 pens and still loses 6-0 lol
Gk in 80s still haven t glove.
