  • Part One of a rarely seen documentary on the making of "Spider-man and His Amazing Friends", an animated series which aired on NBC Saturday mornings in 1981.
Disclaimer: I do not own the content involved, but have shared this in the spirit of fan interest. This is possibly a lost time capsule never to be seen otherwise.
The series is now available on Disney+, or to own digitally on UA-cam and Amazon.

This is pure gold! Thank You for uploading this! SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS remains my favourite animated Spidey. It's simple, it's charming and it's pure early 80s magic. I was lucky enough to get the whole series on dvd but if Disney or whoever were to release these, uncut, fully remastered on blu ray with this doc as an extra, fans would go nuts!

*FUN FACT:* Dan Gilvezan, the voice of Spider-Man, would later do the voice for Bumblebee in Transformers, another cartoon by Marvel Productions which is a co-production between them and Sunbow.

Well FYI it was produced for Westinghouse broadcasting -- a collaboration between KPIX in San Fransisco and KDKA TV in Pittsburgh. It was seen on the 5 Group W (Westinghouse) stations (now owned by CBS) and syndicated to a few dozen stations beyond that. In the early 80s few people were talking about anyone besides Stan Lee as the "creator" of Spider-Man, et al. This is Stan's first on screen appearance as a host. It impressed NBC enough to have him narrate the subsequent seasons of the series.

The 1960s Spider-Man cartoon was the first in animation for him

Exactly. Strange how Stan Lee glossed over that. Anyway, what a guy!

Awesome. I keep wishing that Disney (who holds the rights to the show) will give us an official Blu Ray or DVD release for the show. Would love to see this special in a remastered form.

They may not have had the budget back then, but these were still awesome. They made me raid the comic book stores and quarter piles to fill my collection with Marvel.

    I beg to differ!

On what levels? This was a fairly faithful adaptation for Marvel back in the early 80s, at least in spirit. I guess it depends on what era you grew up in. For us 80s kids, this is how some of us will always hear the adult Spidey!

Ooo good, it must've been later DVD sets. I had the 2004 DVD sets and only interviews with writers and voice actors, but no rare footage from production

Hey, they didn't count on continuity geeks to be watching. lol
Still, it worked harder to not insult the intelligence of the audience the way Superfriends did.

no i mean, stan's voice, saying it's a) spiderman's tv debut WRONG b) that he completely created spiderman WRONG and as far as this, i grew up in the 80s, i watched this, it was ok. no episode of spiderman will beat 60s spiderman, specifically Revolt in the Fifth Dimension. the fox series was good, and the 80s spiderman without his friends i only know cause of the beginning of the album by Viktor Vaughn, Vaudville Villian the Spider Old Lady was the best thing about the Fox series (her arc)
