At min 7:22 the mother takes pictures of the beautiful flowers with her smartphone. This is exactly the place where the old housekeeper is buried. A symbol for the fact that poor people are only the fertilizer for the garden of the rich.

Just a fyi, Korea is 70% mountains. It's not that exaggerated when the Kim family have to travel so far down to get to their house from the Park's. The rich really do live on top of them for exactly the monsoon season and better view/atmosphere,etc.

I found it to be the Same in El Salvador. The rich families live at the top of the mountains while the “lower” class people all the way down the difference is so noticeable it’s insane
I've been to seoul and I agree with this.
Krish Plays Not exactly, as many apartments located riverside are almost at sea level and costs from $2mil-4mil, and crowded slums built on high hills across Seoul are the main locations where poverty can be seen. The neglected elderly lives there, while middle-high to high class families lived in apartments in Seoul, and low-middle to middle class families live in apartments in the suburbs. While there are wealthy neighborhoods located alongside mountains, it’s not always the case. Monsoon floodings are not a problem either in seoul so there are really no disadvantages of living closer to sea level.
i know that the house was built for the filming, but where was the street leading to park's house filmed? itaewon, gangnam?
something i think a lot of people missed is the part where the "poor" dad explains how the best plan is no plan because plans always fail. this is proven right throughout the movie, from the family's plan to infiltrate the rich house to the "rich" dad's plan to scare everyone at the birthday party. this is especially important because the son's letter at the end begins with "i made a plan" therefore implying that his dad will forever be stuck in the basement.

Something I think is worth noting is that, the Kims can’t afford to make plans of any kind, they are living for the day not knowing if tomorrow they’ll have enough to sustain themselves. In contrast, the Parks are making plans to go camping for Da song’s birthday and when that fails they can afford to make a garden party to celebrate after the rain passes. There is also a persistent theme of the Parks making plans at the expense of the Kims own plans, the Parks plan a garden party and the Kims are expected to work on that day even though a deluge left them homeless the night before. No matter what problems the Kims face, the Parks still expect the Kims to alter their plans last minute to conform to their own plans because of social standing.

@@blaisetelfer8499 exactly, they didn’t know, because they don’t make the effort to know their staff as human beings rather than providers of services, they don’t know they became homeless because they stop existing to the Parks when the service is met. Mr. Park discourages Mr. Kim from crossing an emotional barrier because that would disturb this ideology.

@electricmole The concept is simple, but the execution is not. As casual viewer this movie didn't come off as cheesy way to criticize capitalistic social construct. All these small details in how the movie is shot how the pacing is done adds to the whole experience.
electricmole Lol you okay man? The idea is usually always easy to point oht but execution is hard. It shows just how simple minded you are and don't even look at the bigger pictures. This film isn't just how they showed poor and rich, it's how they showed it, in what ways they showed it; social, physical, emotional, etc. It's a very broad idea that they were able to condense all of it and create this film it's not just easily pointing out what is poor and what is rich, it's how that idea is executed. I've watched many films that brings in the poor and the rich but 'Parasite' did it flawlessly. So, you should just sit down and think about this for a moment. Think about what broader idea because it seems like your head can't see how much depth this movie has
Parasite is legitimately one of the best movies I have ever seen and is the best one I have seen in theatres. I cannot describe the thrill and joy and terror and sadness those two hours blessed me with. My god, what a film.

This is by far the best movie of the year, it'd be a shame if it didn't win best picture at the Oscars
I personally thought that The Lighthouse was the best of the year, but Parasite’s definitely the best of the Best Picture contenders.

Christopher Binder, I guess you have a point, so I’ll be a pedant. Of the things I’ve seen this year, which is admittedly quite a bit but not everything, I thought the best movies were:
1. The Lighthouse
2. Parasite
3. Portrait of a Lady on Fire
4. Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood
5. Marriage Story
Christopher Binder a lot of great stuff came out in 2019, but Parasite has already been deemed a classic by many people
I loved how the dining table always had a seat for all the characters but it was always empty
I particularly like the scene when Ki Woo(the son), refused/think twice when walking down the stairs and looking at his drowned home, but the water keep dashing against him and 'flush' him and his family back to where they truly belongs, so symbolic.

also the fact that the rain (any natural event) affected the rich in a very minor way, they had to cancel their trip, but affected the Kim's so much so that they lose their home and as Kevin stood on the stairs you could see water was rolling downwards - as if the director wanted to show that the societal problems trickle down to the lower classes, multiplying their effect on the poor.
I noticed that too... it feels as if... all the filthy water was a representation of what they just did and how life was getting back on them. The more they 'damage' they did... the more chaos in their home.

I think a good movie is seen when people still talk about it after watching it, parasite is definitely a theme of conversation, it’s not just a “it was good!” Type of movie, it made everyone in the cinema to analyze and think about it, I think that’s a very important factor in movies.

I couldn't help but get chills during most of this video; you captured so many things I've wanted to put into words for a while. The fact that Parasite tackles the larger structures and systems that create the class divide, rather than trying to blame the individual "bad apples" within those structures, is what makes it so different from many other "eat the rich" narratives. Terrific stuff, mate.

I think subconsciously we notice these things, this video just articulates them. One thing that struck me was had the Kims and the old housekeeper come to arrangement, everyone could have gotten what they wanted, but instead they starting fighting one another. I think this is very telling about society as well.

The background score, editing, lighting, cinematography, plot devices are all a part of it. And the human mind just connects all of it, mostly subconsciously. Consciously, you're mostly just following the dialogues and the actors' emotions.

This is actually a great point… this brings up a bigger topic of greed and the effect it has on us as a society.
The moment the mom pushes the former maid down the stairs with her foot while hurrying to serve was both a laughter moment and a sad one at the same time.So much symbolism there. Also the windows thing, windows are a privilege and tell where you are in the hierarchy

Parasite was just a good movie, it was no masterpiece, fine you could think it was a masterpiece, but it definitely wouldn't be studied, you should go ahead and watch some actual masterpiece and then tell me was parasite a masterpiece or not.
I see a lot of comparison between joker and parasite.
The joker portrayed the class divide with huge angst, anger and hatred towards the rich.
Parasite on the other hand showed the world just as it was. It showed the kind of life and choices needed to sustain the life one currently has. Parasite showed how interconnected the world was. That without the poor, the rich couldn't maintain their lifestyle or be rich without to poorer consumers buying from their business. The poor also kinda need to rich for jobs and many necessities for them to buy.
But the most interesting scene for me is the part where Jessica was bleeding out and Mr. Park was asking for the car keys.
They were both fathers, trying their best for their dying child. Could you blame the father for prioritizing his son and asking for his car keys? Could also blame Mr. Kim from staying with Jessica, as she was his daughter?
But in the end the divide was clear. While both fathers were trying to save their child, only one had the capacity to act immediate--the man with his own car. But he had to kind of rely on Mr. Kim to give him the keys. Much like how the wealth of the rich is reliant on the purchases of the many poor.
Mr. Kim had to deal with it however he could. Futile with his efforts as she was stabbed in the heart, maybe portraying that in the end, that poor people are trapped. No matter how much he'd stop the bleeding, she'd still die.

Interesting take on that moment in the film. I wonder if there was also symbolism in the futility of the poorer father stabbing the richer father to death in his anger at the unfairness of the situation. In the end, it didn't achieve anything, and the result was the death of both children.

What makes this movie a winner, is how much conversation is going on about it after seeing it. I never saw the perspective of what you just described. But now it makes the movie richer visually. The story line, the actors, the set, all being talked about more so then most movies. A craft, an art and a story well presented.
Director Bong is a genius. But you also are impressive to catch even those minute things.
How is he so good at visualizing? Here's one clue: he has one talent that other directors don't have --- drawing. He's good at drawing. (Actually he used to be a cartoonist for the students' newspaper when in university. And this talent seems to be natural, because his father was a designer.)
He's so good at drawing that he can visualize his ideas easily (like, on the storyboards) before shooting. This's a huge advantage other directors don't have.
he also acted most of the scenes by himself right before the actors portray it to tell exactly how he wanted the scenes to be translated by the actors. crazy

Love this! I couldn't help but also think the whole film as a sort of literal and metaphorical ladder to reach the top that shatters any scope for empathy. To reach the top requires one to be a parasite; to have a lack of empathy for anyone around you (the Kims towards the former housekeepers' family and then eventually the other way round) and quite literally kick them out of your way.
and in the end their attempts were futile. they ended up back where they started, except without the daughter and with their father being essentially trapped in prison. they gained nothing, they lost a lot.
@@cheekybananaboy3361 I think the even sadder part remains in the son's ultimate decision to make another "fundamental plan" (and plans never work out the way you want them to of course) to, by hook or crook, buy that very house. So, maybe the cycle continues despite having lost so much and gained so little.

@@usedtoilet8295 there are a lot of Best Picture Winners without any acting nominations. The most important thing about a good shot at the Best Picture award is the Best Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay nominations.

Your dream has come true
I just saw the film a couple days ago, and the ending really stood out to me. I immediately thought about the myth of The Dream of success, and how they will work and wait and hope for when the opportunity comes, though it probably won’t. It won’t undo all they’ve lost already.... the years of struggle, pain, isolation, the death and maltreatment of those in the same situation (the previous owners)... the idea that once the son gets /his/ way, all his father will have to do is come up the stairs. He must achieve the improbable for even the chance to elevate others.
“Until then. So long.”

The details about the physical barriers really helped explain a lot of what I was feeling but couldn’t articulate / quite pinpoint.

One very strong metaphor for me is the fight between two poor families that is happening in the basement of the rich family's house. It definitely is not put there just for dramatic effect. As I see it, it is a clear visualisation of the struggle that lower class has to deal with in today's society, the struggle that is happening all of the time, the fight between those in need for better jobs, higher status and salary's, but to get to them you have to be better than bunch of other lower class people who want the same thing. The thing is, number of available positions is restricted, and only few are going to get there. What you get as a result is fight in which every possible way to get to your target is justified. Simply put, it's a bloodbath. And while this is happening, the rich are enjoying the life, having a laugh, partying, and underneath them, in their near distance, sometimes even in their own basement, the battle for survival is happening, the battle they themselves are not even aware of, and why should they be? Lower class struggle doesn't affect them in any way, and it's not until that very fight compromises their own convenience, that they become aware of it's existence.
I get a very different feeling from that. The opportunities weren't limited for them, they could just easily agree to let the housekeeper in from time to time or to help them now they had power, but no. Just a few minutes ago, the Kim mother was talking about how she would be better if she was rich but she was even worse. There are so many movies just shoving "rich are evil" down out throats nowadays but Parasite was so much more than that.

Excellent video! I'm working on my own at the moment and it's interesting to see how many different things you took out of the film that I never had considered. 6:44 and 7:30 I'm glad you pointed this out. Many people noticed that Mr Park ignored Jessica's injury and was only concerned about getting his own son to the hospital on time, but not only was Jessica's wound obviously fatal, the Kims did shit like that all the time. They were more than happy to frame the maid and chauffeur so they could take their jobs, and the mom literally kicked the maid down the stairs and didn't care at all about her when she laid there dying.
This film is so haunting. I’m still thinking about it.
I'm so glad this movie got so much recognition, Bong Joon Ho is really great, his english movies are good but his korean movies are fantastic.
Nailed it. I hate the criticism of this film you often hear that goes, "It was just a 'poor people good, rich people bad' movie." People who say that immediately betray how oblivious they are of the film's themes. It's not about being a good or bad person. It's about the deep flaws of the very structure itself, and how it pits human beings against each other.

Agree. Also the dad's famous line: "You know what kind of plan never fails? No plan. No plan at all. You know why? Because life cannot be planned." That pretty much foreshadows that even though the son has changed, he's never going to buy that house or see his dad again no matter how hard he plans.

@@happiyyyy Yea that's a good question. Prison would have been a better alternative but I think the symbolism of him ending up in the basement helps the story come full circle. Kim getting stuck in the basement reinforces that he was always and will forever be a "parasite"; destined to live in the shadows of other men and be content with the little scraps he's given. It's also ironic because if he had made a plan or taken different actions, that might not have been his fate.
My personal interpretation is he ends up in a slump bc he's never willing to take responsibility for himself-- much like the former housekeeper's husband. He's given up on life and trying to "make a plan" and instead looks for easy alternatives to survive, even if it's at the expense of his and his family's well being. Just my two cents though...

Let's take an example of highly successful people who rose from bottom like, BTS, Bill Gates and many more self made people. Even though they made to the other side, it's only them. BTS rose but they would never be able to take the entire underdog industry with them. It's just only one people would be able to make it to the other end. It's the growth of only individual, You should be able to withstand unbearable pain, agony and struggles to get there.
This explanation actually cleared my view about what Bong is actually trying to say. Class system was there and it will always be there and that's why this movie have no villen or no hero, at some point all of them are villen. This is not the story of an individual but it's the story of mass. He just illustrated it with the help of three family.

Absolutely and it also makes you wonder how much portion of it is having the right skills and mentality to get there because... as we clearly see in parasite, it requires a whole perspective and right thinking to climb up from the bottom. The poor family lacked understanding even until the last second of How they could get there and obtain what they had. Wisdom is required. BTS along with Bang Pd nim and Bill Gates have had the wisdom to understand how to escape and become great.

It was brilliant, the dichotomy of light and dark was so well executed. As a lover and interior designer of contemporary homes, the home was an added bonus. The scenes transitioned like visual poetry. The cinematographer absolutely made this the best film of the decade in my Opinion.
This movie is one of the best I've seen in years. So refreshing to see movies can still surprise me in an age of constant repetition from blockbusters, sequals and remakes.

This is a very interesting dichotomy of using elevation to illustrate class separation, and this is all the more ironical because traditionally in Korea, it's usually been the poor who lived up high and the wealthy lived down below. In the days before the Seoul landscape was completely renovated, so probably up to the 1980s, we used a word "달동네" which literally means moon neighborhood or moonlight neighborhood, and these were neighborhoods that dotted the sides of hills all throughout Seoul. Think of the Brazilian slums that exist almost vertically up the sides of hills. That was what it was like, and with the high population density of those neighborhoods, coupled with the narrow roads, that meant that no cars or buses went up that high, so all residents had to walk up steep hills to get home. They were probably called moon neighborhoods because the busy people usually only saw their houses in the moonlight during the week. That's what it was like, while the more affluent classes lived in the valleys, in expensive apartments.

Wow! This video really shows what is the role of a director in movies! Sometimes we are cautght thinking about: "If there is a great cinematographer, like Roger deakens, that probably helps to make a lot of technical decisions in the movies, like camera movements, angles, etc, or if there is a good production designer, what is the directors role ?"
I think that this video anwsers this question. A director go beyond of deciding which angle or shot could be better! he/she must guide everbody and explain how the scene must seem like, to extract the best from his team, and connect everything.

Love love love this!! Dude, this film gave me chills, this analysis gave me chills by the end. THIS film makes me want to become a better filmmaker desperately, and to tell even better stories. These analysis gives me better understanding of the tools at our disposal, and how and why to use them.
Something I think gets missed is the bond the families have. One is a true family who has each other, works together, supports one another in very real and unconditional ways. The other is obsessed with status, reliant on tutors and counselors to parent and guide their children - with whom they share no warmth or bonding with. The daughter is always upstairs in her room and the son in his fantasies of appropriating a culture so far from his own that it seems to be a symptom of his lack of paternal guidance.
While the members of both families are desperately concerned with social and economic status, only one of them is a family in the true sense of togetherness. The Parks have a loveless marriage in which the wife - as with her everyday existence- relies on heavy doses of sedatives just to be intimate with her husband. They aren’t concerned with the feelings of their children, just their behavior and test scores, which they offer no help or guidance directly to them in order to improve.
One of the main contrasts in the many symmetries of Parasite is how the families interact and the meaningfulness and unconditional nature of their bonds. The Parks are never seen laughing and ribbing one another and having a great time, going through lines to prepare for the next steps in their schemes, etc… Though both families have massive character flaws, only one can be called a loving family even if that love is a bond of shared values of deceit, greed, obsession, etc…
It’s spot on to say there are no good guys or bad guys and that the film is a commentary on South Korean society and it’s extreme disparity of wealth and class. There are also differences in the way the families act towards the others in their family that don’t get a lot of exposure in the analyses I’ve seen. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and it’s definitely one of the better ones on YT.

I watched this movie tonight and no UA-cam analysis can truly do it justice. This movie NEEDS to be seen. This movie CHANGES your expectation of movies as a whole. The entire time I was on the edge of my seat. This movie is just on a whole different level compared to most released in the past few decades, at least for a western audience.

I also loved the part where Kim family drank from the Filite(One of the cheapest beer in south Korea) to the Heineken, and finally to the expensive whiskey to show that alcohol also represents the social classes on the society. Bong Jun Ho used ppl in the finest way possible.

you can see the class difference in this videos sponsorship. while thomas is very articulate and deserves all his subscribers, people like tyler have to pay him money just to be noticed by other viewers. also theres great symbolism in the fact that in the sponsorship frame thomas' name appears big and mid frame, while tylers' small and beneath him. further more in the commercial itself, while u see tyler well enough, u always hear thomas' voice over him, basically legitimizing his existence. great video!

This is the best picture I have ever seen
To me the biggest example of the Kims being nothing better than the Parks is when Mrs. Kim is given the clear choice to help the old maid and her husband live in the basement and doesn't. There is no living at or climbing to the top without harm done to another person in the movie. That's what a parasite is, something that benefits off of the suffering of another. They're all parasites.

I am so happy that Parasite became the first foreign film to win the Best Picture in the Oscars. Thank you, Bong Joon-ho, for creating such a marvelous work of art.
I went high school near the store that Ki-woo drank soju. However, I didn't recognize that store and street at a glance. And i recalled my old memories of at a high school. Even though, those memories pretty suck, i felt a little happy for a while. Most terrible part of this film is that Ki-Woo won't be able to rescue K- tak from bunker in the end.
