Great tips! Most photographers boast how they end up taking less photos over years each time they go out on a shoot. But honestly nobody knows how great a shot will look until they’ve reviewed it on the big screen at home and through experimenting we can grow so much more as a photographer. I also see a lot of landscape photographers using tripods and staying in the same spot the whole time when there are other shots they could have taken in nearby areas. I don’t bring a tripod purely because I don’t want more gear so I end up using railings, rocks or whatever surfaces are around as a tripod.

Honestly if you can just stabilise your camera handheld against a solid surface then you're fine without a tripod unless it's completely dark. I've shot at 1/4s handheld no problem this way.

I like your thoughts on planning. I think the same way. I would add that, plans can also fall apart when you arrive at your location. Sometimes your information might be off, or the weather will not cooperate, or what you thought you could do was just not possible. In those instances, be ready to adapt and capture what is possible. You can surprise yourself.

My summary of your excellent advice is: shoot what you find beautiful and interesting, and unique. Learn and build technique, but don't be bound by it. Enjoy the thought, setup, and environment. Participate in the journey and nature you're in.

I think thats why its valuable to have more than one day at a location. You can have the first day running and gunning, then by the second day you know exactly where to plant your tripod and what kind of focal length you want and how long you have for each shot you want on said tripod.
Side note: add another day if you know the weather might be erratic

Moving is so important. I was shooting the Northern Lights, a once in a lifetime experience, on a tripod with a limited amount of time. I stayed in one spot and would have had more keepers if I had taken the time to move around. I focused on the amazing sky without spending the time to consider the other elements in my pictures.
Thanks for your thoughts, they parallel my personal approach to art.

That last point about movement is key. I’ve captured some great moments which would have been missed had I packed it up and sat around like everyone else around me.

yes yes, i love your take on the "rules" of photography. i am new to it but was taught early to "color outside the lines" when we approach our art. after all it's art!

  • @dalloiselle7274

Your point about learning the 500 rule and then learning to modify it.. Really resonated with me.
The first “photography rule” I first learned was the rule of thirds. I got so over board with it that I wasted a lot of time in Lightroom fixating the cross section of third lines on Birds Eye’s until I looked at the photo and would think I don’t like the look of that.
Then I would reframe it or return to my original composition and work with that. It always yielded a better result to my eyes and also my viewers.

I love this! I love hiking and I used to do it a lot back then but then I took a long pause from it. Going back to hiking and seeing some breathtaking views, I would say as well yeah, get the shot you want plus any others you might have seen along the way. But, I would also suggest to just go hiking, and in this case for you, go explore the place of interest or wherever it may be. It's good to soak the moment and just be present in the area you are in. Sure after time, you can bring your camera and it will be easier to start recognizing some patterns, but I think this is a good thing to do at the beginning, just to be a natural observer of the bigger picture of where you are at, rather than going in with behind a lens. That is my experience and it has helped me a lot. But like mentioned in the video, experiment and explore!

I would love to hear about how you plan out your landscape shoots. I've always been curious to know if photographers actually scout out wanted "pokemon"/photo locations first before bringing the gear or if they see an image and just decide that they need it in their catalogue and then just hope for the best?

Bang on Pat. Thanks for this video. I'm currently planning a 10 day trip to the UK, from Canada. I have a number of different outdoor themes in the works so researching the locations in advance is critical. I'll be shooting regardless of the weather as it's always about the available light at any given point in the day. I plan to make the best of it. I always enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing.

I like the move around idea, this is something I do too and enjoy .. but sometimes, you can end up on a rock at tthe end of the afternoon, under the rain, trying to get a shot you know it won't be good but you have to take it because it was a pain to go there 😅

Hallo Pat, a video on planning a photo is excellent. However not all of us have time and opportunity to make the thinkable photo. When travelling you just have to take the given opportunity as it available in time and weather in a time frame of 1-2 hours. So how would you plan Landscapes as they arrive on a trip. By the way excellent video's BR Carli.
