  • Moonlight moments - in concert with the extraordinary maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain! The raga, Chandranandan, is one of the most magnificent creations of the legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahib and celebrates the beauty of the moon. This is an excerpt from a performance in Switzerland in the early 1990's.
I have been very fortunate to receive so much help and guidance during almost 50 years of studying Indian Classical Music. Not only did my guru, Ustad Ali Akbar Khansahib, tirelessly share his "ocean" of knowledge with all his disciples, but other maestros who also taught at his College, like Ustad Zakir Hussain and Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, were like elder brothers to me and were incredibly generous with their encouragement and support. I have also been very lucky to be able to perform with them many times over the years, which has always been both inspiring and instructive. I will always cherish and be grateful for all their guidance and love.

This rag a Chandranandan is creation of Ustad AAK
Played by maestro ustad Ken, Z beautifully,
    Remind me of his mentor.
He is living legend of lineage of Maihar Seniya Gharana.
I admire his style of playing Sarod which remind me of Ustad Bahadur khan, Pandit Vasant Rai.
    Tonal quality is almost same.
    God bless him.

A masterpiece indeed ! from both the stalwarts. Ken ji's sarod definitely evokes the touch and sublimity of the great master Ustad Ali Akbar Khan saheb. And what can you say about Ustad Zakir Hussain. His accompaniment clearly reflects the profound sensitivity that he has towards the mood and the melody of the ragas....Ustadji is absolutely unique in this regard.

@@kenclassic Dear Ken-ji, I have been an avid follower of your work. I would like to earnestly request to please consider explaining the structure of the raga Chandranandan. This raga is absolutely enchanting to experience yet so enigmatic to follow, that it is very hard to break it down. For example if I want to sing and practice Chandranandan how should it be approached....etc. Sorry If I am asking for too much !

Played very beautifully and in the style of his guru Ali Akbar Khan. Within the students of Allauddin Khan there are 4 distinct and very different sarod styles of his students. 1) Ali Akbar khan 2) Bahadur Khan 3) Vasant Rai 4) AAshish Khan, all of the 4 mentioned played very differently from one another to the point sytlistically they could seem from 4 different schools. The approach to their alap is different, the taan sequences are different to mention a few differences, as is the tonality. The reason for this is because Allauddin Khan was not just a musician or Sarod player but more of a .... "doctor" or researcher of this music and he experimented different teaching techniques with his students and hence all of them sound distinct and different. You can see the same with his sitar students in the names of Ravi Shankar, Nikhil Banerjee and the lesser known (albeit just as great) Indraneel Bhattacharya. Having said that Ken has done such a fabulous duty of really understanding his teachers work and preserving it in a honest and real way- as we hear in his playing the raga his teacher composed. Ken is a true master of this music and instrument!

Dear Andrew, thanks so much for your fascinating insights into the depth and breadth of the artistry of Baba Allauddin Khansahib, and how his disciples on both sarod and sitar, developed such a diversity in their styles and approach to the music. When we then add others that he also groomed, like the inimitable Annapurna Devi and the groundbreaking work of his disciples on violin, bansuri and guitar, it is truly an amazing testament to the genius and vision of this pioneer and founder of the Maihar Gharana. I am also very touched that you enjoyed this performance. Ever since I began studying Indian music I have been drawn to raga Chandranandan, which is one of Ali Akbar Khansahib's greatest creations, and it was always inspiring and thrilling to be able to performance with Ustad Zakir Hussain, one of the greatest virtuosos and pioneers of tabla.

@@kenclassic Ken this is the first time I heard your playing, I was listening to my dad Vasant's UA-cam recording and then your recording was the next on que on UA-cam. I was like this is very nice who is this? I thought it was your guru at first and so came to the computer and found out who the player was. It's so refreshing to hear that real original indian music and the sarod is still being played among all this new cacophonic sound pollution going on right now in the name of ICM. I really appreciate your alap, (something that's mostly lost now), the temperament tonality and musical sense. Really kudus to your craft and dedication! it's much appreciated and enjoyed. Ali Akbar Khan would be very proud. Let me know when you are performing in New York next- would Love to hear you.

@@andrewrai5752 Thanks for your message Andrew. I met your father several times at the AACM in California and was very impressed with him, both as a musician and as a fine person! I've been living in Switzerland for many years now and with Khansahib's blessing, opened the Swiss branch of the AACM in 1985. Khansahib spent several weeks with us every year (up to 2002), both teaching the students who attended his yearly seminars here, and also giving performances in Europe. I was so fortunate to be able to spend so much time with him. I will be happy to let you know the next time I perform in NY. I am right now in Boulder, Colorado taking a walk under the glistening moon and this recording started through autoplay. At first, I wondered if it was Ustad Ali Akbar Khan Sahib, and with the first stroke of the Tabla, I was sure it was Ustad Zakir Hussain. But then, I saw Ken's name and was very surprised. The entire 13 minutes are pure bliss and if you take a walk outside, the music complements the nature around you. This was an excellent performance and a fine balance between the Sarod and Tabla. As always, excellent work Ken. I was touched!
