Also sturddlefish did not magically appeared in a pond where two parent species were kept. They were deliberately crossed through inducing them with hormones and then taking sperm and eggs from the fish.
Yeah i didnt ever read the updated article about it that had more details after i made this. But at first they said the lab accidently created the sturdlefish by mixing the two fish. I still havent seen the info on what happened specificially. Other than a blurb that The hybrids were created "accidentally", during attempts to induce gynogenesis. But what did they do? Accidently use an embryo from one and a sperm from the other fish?
@@Fishtory in this case "accident" meant that genetic material of both species actually connected and started developing including genes of both fish. Initial reason for connecting egg and sperm of both species was to induce gynogenesis and the end result was different than expected but mixing egg and sperm of these two species was deliberate.
This has very quickly become my favorite aquarium UA-cam channel. I always learn something new, and end up feeling motivated and inspired to try out something new for myself. Thank you 😊
Im honored to hear that. I try to take what Lou does, and find the science behind it, thats vetted. Along with high tech and low tech... deep substrate... no tech... im just excited to learn and share as i do so 😌 welcome!
Great video, I really enjoy this type of content. Adding some cuts to images or related materials (graphs, etc..) on each topic would really level it up. I found myself continually pausing the video to look up the fish etc.. that you were talking about. Regardless, good stuff.
Thanks Alex! Really enjoyed the fishy trivia. ☺️☺️ I've been going through and regoing through every video you've done on blackwater aquariums and biotopes in general. It's my new obsession! Red Fish Blue Fish has the blue line licorice gouramis...or maybe Dan's Fish...but think the first. Nowhere near ready for them...but am in love! ❤️❤️❤️. Being endangered and reading how bad it's becoming for them is really pushing me to try to work with them. Thanks for all your work educating us and getting info and just inspiration in paths many of us would have never thought to tread on our own. ☺️☺️☺️
Just wanted to share our thoughts on this video. As a couple who are obsessed with fishkeeping and ***always** find your content to be really informative. :) (your welcome Alexander, but its well deserved :) ) Keep moving forward brother!
Hi Alex, Thanks for another interesting video. A suggestion for a possible future topic is unexpected inhabitants in your aquarium. In my aquarium I noticed a very tiny snail, 1/4 inch, crawling on the glass. I have no idea how it showed up as I haven't added any additional fish, snails or plants to my aquarium in over one year. I do have one mystery snail however the tiny snail has a cone shaped shell. The only items added are dried and frozen foods plus botanicals. Cheers
Sturdlefish is giving me weird "Aliens are just people who left earth a million years ago" vibes. Breeding across time to make wild hybrids. That's really cool
Not sure if they’re still there or not but when I visited Paris in the mid 80s, I remember seeing those fountains that surround the Louvre museum were filled with some type of fish. I guess they were carp.
I would think that we domesticated guppies too. I recently bought some. Never had them before. They behave completely different from all the fish I kept before (rainbowfish, tetras, rasboras), more similar to a Betta. They are not at all afraid of me. They practically follow me and beg for food. Maybe their wild relatives are also so brave. 🤷🏼♀️ But to me they seem like small water puppies when compared to their tankmates, that are mostly afraid of me and hide when I move.
They also have good influence on tank mates. My cpd's stopped hiding and being skittish after I introduced the guppies. Now all are one big family, feed from the surface and swim in the open.
Do you ever do any saltwater stuff? I watch you videos because I like fish but I just have a saltwater tank lol. I’d love some history on saltwater stuff
Please show us pictures next time. Maybe it’s really hard to edit in, but I had to pause at every number to check out these awesome fish you’re sharing. Got me too curious
I started doing that right around the time i made that video actually. This was just an off the top of my head video, but i really should have done that. Thanks for the input
Brilliantly done Alex! Hi from New Zealand! I love your content i always find something interesting and enthralling in your presentations . Last week you were asking about interesting fish, well I keep licorice gouramis, to say that they fascinate me is a understatement, they are amazing and rare , I consider it a real privilege to have them live with me, if you ever get the opportunity to Aquire some GO for it, they are so rare in the wild now I believe that any increase in population is good, what are your thoughts on this matter, is it futile? Will they ever regain their lost habitat? Or is growing the genetic pool more important? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Have a great day mate
Cool! Yeah i know other animals can do it, and make clones but apparently the mangrove killi split and scramble their own dna in some unique method evolutionarily. Mollies can self clone too though!
Carp kept in Europe in middle ages (Cyprinus carpio) did not have colour variations. The only difference between different lines were scale patterns. They still look the same today.
@@Fishtory no, Cyprinus carpio never had and does not have any other colour forms than natural form. Koi is diffetent species - Cyprinus rubrofruscus. Common carp we farm and eat to this day in Europe comes from wild C.carpio inhabititing Danube and Volga rivers.
@@Fishtory Indeed, in order to have supply logically implies you had demand, now even my pet shop won't take them for free. I wonder if I should just fry them in a pan or it would be better breaded with brocoli as a side dish... You kind of quickly loose the "you're precious to me" mindset.
I really appreciate the in-depth research you do in order to bring us the amazing history, evolution and current affairs of our wet pets. Thank you once again for. sharing your knowledge.
This is why I refuse to buy some fish that will only live for only 2-3 years.this is why I look for fish that will last like Mascara Barb's will live for 8 years but I can't find them, so I got 7 baby Shubunkin's they can live 15 years I'm growing them up so I can put them in my koi pond out back

Mourning Geckos also reproduce via parthenogenesis. Eggs are laid and hatch into clones of their mother.
