A minimalist suggestion I learned. Keep one item of the many to cherish. I kept my moms teapot and display it in my home. It’s a minimalist answer. Jody and Mark- you both are amazing as you put yourselves out there in videos and share life. Thanks to you I am preparing for retirement with my husband! Love you both!
i was going to say kinda the same thing as you commented... minimalism is keeping the cherished things that provide useful functions (and toss the rest)... your mom's teapot is a perfect example...
Same here. I have my mother’s engagement ring and the ring guard that she wore many years later. I have her favorite sewing thimble on my bedside table. I love and cherish these items. My siblings have the big things and most is in storage. I had it all at one point and I waited and waited for my siblings to get what they wanted. I finally had to set a deadline and threaten to give it all away. I loved these items, too, but didn’t have room.
Great idea!! And thank you for your nice comment. I see many comments from you and we love having you in our community. Have you joined our facebook community? The link is in the show notes.
as a new widow, already been donating items and selling stuff. i take that $ and put in dividend VYM. im down to 6 halloween decorations, everything else i gave away.
I've been purging things since I've retired.when Mom passed, it was almost overwhelming going through things. We kept alot of her things out of guilt. I dont want my kids to have to do that. And it feels great!
We downsized to 700 sq feet a year ago June. We got rid of 85% of what we owned. It was difficult but keeping stuff was not an option. But what we gained was a new lifestyle living on the beach. We did keep a few sentimental items, such as some of the pottery we collected, but those pieces we kept are both decorative and functional. On our travels we buy dish towels as souvenirs as they are functional. We don’t miss the stuff. Also, we continue to declutter. Decluttering is not a one time event.
I've always gotten rid of clutter and I'm after my husband to get rid of more of his stuff. regarding hoarders: as awful as it is, people need to realize that it often happens after some sort of trauma. Sadly, many people don't get help until it gets so far out of hand. it's very sad.
My wife and I have been seriously downsizing the last 3 years. Like you Jody, after leaving the legal profession most of my attire went to Goodwill. Kept a few items just in case. We took several hundred CDs and DVDs to a charity. The problematic stuff is our sizeable collection of Native American pottery. I’m Native American so there’s the cultural connection as well as emotional. We spent a small fortune and don’t want to sell them at a yard sale for pennies. ?? You two are great, you further encourage creative ways to accomplish retirement issues.
Thanks for your great vibes about retirement and enjoying life. Many people of our age are feeling depressed, useless, hopeless... Maybe a video abou that?
Jeans. Boots. Comforters. Bed pillows. I downsized from a big 5 bedroom house to a small 2 bedroom, and the 2nd bedroom is my gym and doesn’t even have a bed. I commit to paring down my linen closet and giving away items I no longer need. Thanks for the inspiration.
Used to watch the British show “How clean is your house.” Comparable to U.S Hoarders. That was a real motivator for me to donate and throw away a ton of stuff. Thanks for the vid.
Jody, how did you dispose of your business suits? I spent my career in law but have been retired for over five years. However, at this very moment, there are over 60 business suits (classically tailored) taking up space in my closets. Can you help?
Hi- thanks for the comment. We have a wonderful Goodwill near our home in CT. They have a beautiful shop that takes all clothing, catalogs it and then hangs on racks for folks to shop. I took most of it there. I did pass a few blouses and jackets to a friends daughter who just entered the work force as well.
Thanks for another great video. I have been decluttering for about 2years and find slow and steady works better for me as the stuff is so overwhelming . By the way I used to watch hoarders as inspiration to go clean and declutter 🤗
Coming to terms with my "fantasy self" and letting go of craft projects I will never get back to has been liberating. Donating to my local nursing home has given me joy to know someone will enjoy these items. Letting go of sentimental objects is harder but knowing when I donate, someone will really love and use the items is satisfying to me!

The same. just keep what I need. the rest went to Goodwill. I am a minimalist with clothes. 1 pair of shoes, 5 pairs pants, 5 shirts
Peter Walsh is a great resource. He uses a kind and thoughtful manner to help people achieve minimalism and has youtube videos that are inspiring.

After clearing out my mother's belongings, I am trying to get rid of things in my home so my children do not have to do this.
Such a great idea. We keep talking about the same thing as our parents left that chore for us.

Dealing with it daily.
That's a good plan. A little bit every day.
Moved into my new 300 sq. foot stick built house on one of the San Juan Islands off WA state. Minimalism at it’s best!

This is awesome! Thanks for the comment!
I started paring down everything in our home a year ago. I am loving the results! It spreads over into so many areas of life.
This is great! An inspiration for us all to keep at it!
So true! I’ve done a lot but not there yet.
Do the best you can and keep going! Thanks for being here
