When somebody isn’t speaking their first language it’s generally a good idea to just give them the benefit of the doubt. I seriously doubt this interviewer intended any offense.
Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood and Kingdom of Heaven are movies that get a lot of criticism for not being very historically accurate. Though I loved KOH I thought Robin Hood was quite boring. The reporter knew exactly what he was doing throwing a dig saying this movie is far more realistic. Ridley knew what the reporter was doing and was not playing the game, this is why the reporter was NOT shocked by Scott’s reaction and was kinda expecting it.
@@EDTGO1 yeah exactly. It was just uncalled for. The interviewer knew exactly what he was saying. There was no language barrier lol
@@EDTGO1 I don't see any reason for getting angry at the interviewer. He was tryna compliment him
He was clearly joking. It was just misinterpreted because he was wearing a mask and he's usually a very serious guy.
@@scottf5791 DId he know or not. Even if he calls some of his movie historically inaccurate, that's not a reason to insult a person publicly this way. Calling a movie historically inaccurate does not mean the movie is bad and does not belittle directors talent at all. Not all movies must be accurate historically. Ridley Scott acted like an idiot here and there is no need to justify this.
Damn, Jodie's reaction screams volumes
She has no personality at all, it seems. Never heard of her.

And Jodie Comer is really being getting too pigeonholed into characters who are forcibly abused and pregnant because of this, in "The white princess", "thirteen", here in "the last duel" oh man.
Much better she changing the role as in the series.
The problem was the marketting. Here in Canada, they kept pushing the actors' names in the advertisments, but never told audiences what the story was about. So no one wanted to see it. Hollywood needs to realize that people don't see a film because of the stars. We want to see a good film because the story looks interesting.
The problem was that the movie basically had an hour and half long rape scene... We don't need to see that much rape to get the point.
@@penknight8532 Good point as well.
who cares, hollywood is trash nowadays anyway
@@alphaomega9387 Ridley Scott has seen better days as a director that's for sure.

In a perfect world Jodie Comer would get all the attention, recognition, and praises she deserves for her subtle, nuanced, poignant, utterly brilliant and beautiful performance in 'The Last Duel'. It's a crime how much she's been overlooked this award season.
Oh shut up
@@timesheet6677 dude her acting was spectacular.
I don’t think she’s being overlooked at all, if anyone has eyes and a mind they can see how marvelous of a performance she put on. Her character is the most honorable and truly good character in the whole film.

This is really ridiculous. I mean, he's trying to pay a compliment to ridley and he curses the guy out. What does he do when someone says they hated the film. He was saying the other films were good but in his opinion this one was more real or whatever. The interviewer probably gave the film itself more praise than it really deserved. If ridley can't even handle a compliment without being a complete a total tool than maybe have one of his producers or a writer handle press for the film.
Facts
i am afraid i could not have said this better. BTW the same guy blamed millennials over the failure of The Last Duel, so he seems really unbalanced lately.

Couldn't have said that any better.
May be Sir Ridley Scott didn't like the fact that His Other Films were called LESS REALISTIC.
I mean Regardless of all the arguments here in the comment section.. may be he really didn't like that Individual part.....
It can happen to any Father... When One CHILD of his is being called BETTER than the other Child....
It Can cause emotional Turmoil.
Clearly, the marketing team has failed because I never heard of that movie...
I was thinking the same then i learned how good movies are overshadowed with hyped streamed crap for example justice leage or any crap in that categoty
Sadly many quality movies went under the radar i was not even aware of
The film came out the same time as Carnage and Dune. Let's be real, it never stood a chance.
Because it has really real things that really really happened.... for real 🤯🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣 can not have that kind of thing in the world now 🤣🤣🤣🤣
More like sabotaged. West Side Story, Nightmare Alley and the French Dispatch were all dumped in theatres with barely any notice or marketing. What the Last Duel has in common with the other three movies I mentioned is that they were all fox movies that were in production when Disney bought Fox. Disney buying Fox was all about eliminating a competitor. Disney has a specific brand and they don't want to be making risky movies that don't fit the brand. Why would they when they can use the employees at fox to make sure fire money makers based on the already established ips? I bet you a million euros that you will see more ads for Aladdin 2 (live action sequel), the live action Snow White, the 5th Indianna Jones, the live action Lion King sequel and the live action Little Mermaid than you will for any of these movies.
Btw it's a good movie, esp comer and driver.
You'd think Ridley might have a sense of humor about his own work at 84 years old.
He really doesn't.
Have you considered the possibility that he was joking , and that his British/English sense of humour has been misinterpreted and taken way too seriously by some of you Americans/Canadians?
@@RebornLeveller So British is like Italians then where they say "Fuck you" in translation is thank you lmao
@@RebornLeveller nah he was very visibly riled by that comment, no humour there.
@@nickelbackfan You may be right, but I can only tell you how I perceived it. It's not uncommon for me to hear fellow Brits say "fuck you very much" instead of "thank you very much". I also know people who call each other "cunts" in a jokey affectionate way, which could very easily be misinterpreted by people who don't relate to that kind of humour, especially when the delivery is so dry.
Maybe he hasn’t got a sense of humour about being 84 years old.
The interviewer meant fiction vs. non-fiction. Scott's reaction was inappropriate. But he's known to be "difficult".
just call him an asshole. Dont be afraid to do so. Because that is what he is.
He seems like such a pain in the ass to deal with.
So do you.
Yeah he's really insecure
He’s old and tired of peoples shit. He’s been making movies for over forty years and probably is tired of his stuff being compared to his older films. Every time he makes a movie it’s said to be “not as good as your other one” or “well you did this better in.” It probably gets tiring after a while and he’d rather just talk about the movie at hand.
@Meadow Pinkelle and he has every right to criticize her
He has lived enough to not take shit from anyone !
What’s wrong with saying that the film your promoting now is more realistic than your previous film? Isn’t that a praise for your current film? Or does he want to hear his current work is more fantasy-like than his previous ones?
The director was being an asshole on this one.
Robin hood is a fantasy, last duel is based in real facts, so his answer is rough but justified. The problem is that the interviewer probably believe that Robin hood was a real person
Because the other two movies were ten times better than this Rape Trash Movie.
@@David0Perez0 Robin Hood is not Fantasy and this Rape Movie gets boring after the first 30 minutes.
@@David0Perez0 Robin Hood is not fantasy. Neither the original story or any of the films. That’s not what fantasy means here. Fantasy means magic-systems, grandiose world building, deep history of the setting and climactic character arcs during the course of many books or movies.

He took offense, not our place to tell him to not be offended at something that is entirely subjective. The reporters job is to ask not state, to say “it’s not as good as …” is just a crude way or reporting.
He’s defending his work. Hell I would to if some asshole is making some backhand comment like that.
Ridley becomes a Diva, but he deserves in some way, because he gave us a masterpieces💎
To be fair the interviewer had a point lol. The last duel was absolutely incredible, I really enjoyed it and have to say I enjoyed more the second time of watching.
I just read a russian copy of this video and in the comments so many people were saying this movie has NOTHING common with realism. Ideal teeth in medieval times, helmets for half of a head... Calling this film realistic sounded like a sarcasm because even the gaffer knows how fairytale this movie is.
@@Stanser_Lagrange it's actually pretty accurate to be honest, I watched a documentary on it and there is some differences made for drama. If Jodie answered the same way, she wouldn’t work for a while. This just shows the double standard and the narcissism of old Hollywood directors. If you make a piece of art you should be able to defend it.
But the fact that Jodie sat their and smirked while Ridley cursed out the interviewer was disgusting and she won’t work for while because of that and that’s fine she and rudely need to realize that no matter the status financially or otherwise that dosent not give you the right to curse someone out even if their is a language barrier money dosent buy you class it just makes the person you are even worse and everyone sees it he needs to retire

you're not meant to like him. Neither does he care if you like HIM!! He's a film director. He makes films. Kubrick, Hitchcock, and directors like them don't give a shit if you like their films or not. They just make them. They just happened to be geniuses who knew people would see their films. Watching the last duel I thought that seriously house of Gucci is some kind of a joke.
I mean, the last duel is set in medieval France, the characters are French, but the actors are american/British and they don't speak with a French accent... Why do the American actors in the house of Gucci speak with an Italian accent?
Most of the Italians are going to see the movie dubbed, so that's not a major problem for them, or they're not gonna see it as a joke.

For anyone who is confused about what upset Ridley Scott, to him it seemed as if the interviewer was belittling two of his other films ( _Kingdom of Heaven_ and _Robin Hood_ ) by suggesting that they were not realistic despite them being historical dramas or set in realistic historical settings.
@Big Chap he was not joking , because the interviewer didnt like his movies , and was rude , despite they were great movies , especially Kingdom of the heaven 10\10

If I was to ask you, which periodic film was more realistic between The Duelists or Gladiator, I am sure 9/10 people could tell that one was romanticized, while the other felt more real. I think Ridley has been on the defensive over the last 5-10 year from people just giving him flack about his directing lately and did not see it as a language thing or not being an insult, but a comparison between similar period based films where one is less fantasy than the other.
@@kir8379 F wording non stop is not that bad , if you know how to do it and when
I just watched The Last Duel and my thoughts were literally "wow, I didn't spot any bad or obvious cgi, this film is more realistic than The Gladiator". I mean, he could've taken that even as a compliment.
I’ll be honest, he’s made some really great films but he’s also made a lot of mediocre ones as well. He gets so frustrated with the audiences that he makes these films for and it can get a bit awkward. As for the lacking attendance to The Last Duel...I feel like it wasn’t advertised well, if at all. They marketed the hell out House of Gucci (a movie I had no desire to see but surely Lady Gaga fans would have lined up for anyway) but I think I saw one preview for The Last Duel and never heard about it again.
Gucci sucked...Last Duel was great...so much for audience appeal and box office b.s.

I think they just forgot to advertise this movie. It's my favourite of the year so far. In fact this and Gucci were the most entertained I've been. Ridley still knows how to tell a good story. There have been films which recieved higher praise but were a slog to sit through. Stuff like Spencer, and dune.
Ridley completely overreacted.
Ridley wearing a facemask looks like something from the background in that bar in Star Wars.
I got the impression Ridley was having a joke with the interviewer. In fact i'm certain of it. I honestly don't see why people think Ridley was offended. He looke more amused than angry. I think everyone got the wrong end of the stick here.
You are the only one that sees what is not there, your world must be screwed up.
Jeezz....
Ridley Scott also blamed movie goers for the film not doing well, because they don't know what a good film is. Not everyone has to like your movie, or has to buy a 20 dollar ticket to see it.
Because they don't know. This is good and epic movie, but people are more invested with dumb b-movie action with awful cgi fest like chang chi or venom ROTFL
People have a right to enjoy whatever films they want. Some people like more gritty dark rated films some people don't. Then where their film doesn't do well, people like ridley say that other film isn't real cinema. In other words, your saying the audience is all a bunch of idiots and I'm the arbiter of what's a good movie and what isn't.
@@jakubowczarek1519 Nah. This one was bad as fvck. The worse movie of Ridley Scott. I agree that some people have bad taste and it looks like its getting worse. But worse than being full of cgi, it's being anti-historic and this movie really didn't give a shit about history. I heard that Mel Gibson is going to make a film about the Vikings, and that he intends to use historiography as a base, things like language and dress, customs in general. Let's see if he gets it right.
@@jakubowczarek1519 so? Why does he need validation from others about his movie?
Well he does have a point. Big movie blockbusters are not what they use to be. From the likes of Disney who hasn’t made an original story since the 90s and make live action remakes of movies they have already done. At least Ridley Scott is t afraid to still take risks.
Just finished watching, “The Last Duel.” I thought the movie looked great and I think this was an honest mistake by the interviewer citing the language barrier. I think Ridley took offense to it, because he got a lot of hate for Exodus: Gods and Kings for being “whitewashed” and not being “realistic,” which he seemed to be hurt by. So, I think when the interviewer claimed this movie felt more realistic than some of R.S. other films, he meant cinematography wise, it was shot very well and the practical effects and light use of cgi were executed with great result. I think Ridley may have jumped the gun and associated the interviewer’s comments with a negative connotation and more than likely viewed it from a lens of criticism.
Ridley has said weird things like blaming Millennials / Young People and Cell Phones for Low Earnings. In Reality It's the fact that Movies are dying more and Ridley doesn't know. I've always thought all Movie should be 3 Hours and I know Ridley's Film is 2 Hrs and 30 Mins. TV Series with Eight 1 Hour Episodes and Immersive Video Games are the Future. Can someone explain why this was offensive and triggered such a strong reaction.
the interviewer says The Last Duel was more realistic than Ridley's "Robin Hood" and "Kingdom Of Heaven", which Ridley interprets as insults to those films.
@@GraemeONeil I think I finally understand: perhaps Ridley took the word “realistic” in terms of quality and persuasiveness of his movies and its ideas, while the interviewer meant a more naturalistic style of shooting and linking to historical events.
The interview, I interpreted it as that he said those films were good, but even as great as those films were this is even better. So, I don't think he was trying to tear down his previous work, he was simple paying him a compliment. Now, i don't really think the film deserves that sort of praise in the first place, but to each his own i guess. So, if ridley is gonna be offended by something as simple as a compliment then get someone else to handle press for tge film. He never really has ever seemed like he enjoys promoting the film, or talking about it, which by the way is part of your job as director. And cursing someone out just trying to compliment you is not the way to convince people that they should see this film.
It’s so funny how in the Russian subs in the interview it says: “You are wrong sir, I completely disagree with you” 😂😂

Sorry Ridley, Trump, Justin Trudeau and who ever i wrote about that day
It's been some time since Ridley has made a good/coherent film.
Ridley scott is such a child lol
Bad marketing and bad timing is what killed this movie'z box office. Came out right betweem No time to die and Dune... two of the most anticipated movies of the year. And the marketing relied to much on the cast and the director's name to sell tickets... But Ridley scott's name hasn't been attached to quality projects consistently lately. Last Duel had many great battle sequences they could've used to sell the movie.
No time to die is a mediocre film. Last duel is muuuch better
Ridley Scott is Logan Roy in real life.
Thanks Grandpa
I dunno. Ridley is British. It sounded more to me like dry calm British humor to me. He even said "thank you" in there. I think that was mostly just dry Brit sarcasm. He wasn't actually mad. He was just messing around with the slightly unintentional backhanded compliment seems to me.
Nah mate. He obviously took offense to the interviewer. Trust me on this
Ridley Scott was 84 years old when this happened.. So you think you will have the patience to deal with this shit at hi age? I am not even half his age and have run out of patience with people!! lol
The guy who supplied the horses for this film, just bought my farm 30 kilometres from where the film was set.
He's such a tantrum-throwing child lol millennials are like 30 - 40 year olds now and he blames them and cellphones for his own failures.
Maybe white actors' names dont carry as much marketing power as he thought lol
A: there's a language barrier and B: the last duel did seem more realistic than his previous period pieces
Realism isn’t necessarily good or bad
Well yes. Journalist and Scott s both fool boys. Here was no reason for anger of Ridley
@@cinemagraphymahivara2000 what
@@brwi1 what a you do no understand ?
He's right
are we 100% sure that ridley scott wasnt just joking or taking the piss
Yes.
Yup he's a real grouch nowadays.
I thought the Last Duel was dope haha
Pretty sure Ridley is fucking with him, he's smiling under his mask :D
yeah me too he is an old chap. Old chaps used to banter like this when young.
With a mask 😂
The movie is feminist dribble, acted well by two of the four main characters
