It's *amazing* to me that those electrolytic caps are still good *after 60 years!* That receiver rolled off the assembly line when most Japanese products were considered "cheap." I note the tiny CONELRAD markings on the AM dial at 640 and 1240 kHz.

Just snatched one of these Sony's, can't wait to get it.
Good to know little was required to bring it back to life
    AMAZING

That's a very nice and very cool radio. Very thoughtful of your parents to pick that up for you! Thanks for the video and enjoy.

That is a nice radio. That dates back to when Sony really was something special. Hot or not I don't think I could resist the temptation to recap that and keep it.

What a nice radio, your parents have taken good care of it :-D
Quality sony, not a cheap purchase.
Ahh good old micronta, a Radio shack/Tandy product.
It looks well made with a decent transformer and chunky heat sinked pass transistors.
Hopefully you can find a switch so it's not on all the time wasting electricity.
I have one of there early digital multimeters, its still going fine :-D

If you can find a hobby shop in town or Hobby Lobby, you actually can make a battery door for it using sheet
polystyrene. It comes in assorted sizes in a pack too. Comes in several thickness which can be layered together.
Use MEK to glue the pieces together cut to fit. You can make a lip of the styrene around the edge to keep it in place.
Total cost would be about $12 to do it including the glue. This goes for any transistor radio since eBay tends to sell
radios missing the battery door often enough.

Keep an eye out for those power distribution/surge suppressor devices at the local thrift shop. The ones that were used by the old PC computers that the CRT monitor sat on top of. For probably less than $10 I ended up with one red neon power switch that I used for my Triplite regulated 12 volt DC power supply, 5 orange neon ones, and a 14 ga. 3 prong power cord. If you want a couple I could clip a couple of them out and send them to you, that way you can keep yours original.

Sony's advertisements described this radio as having "Snap Tuning" on FM. I assume this was Sony's term for their version of AFC. Those early to mid 1960's Sony portables are nice looking with interesting details. I have a TFM-117 (two actually) and a somewhat rare AFM-152 with the Esaki Diode circuit.

There's an OEM Sony ad on ebay for this radio from 1964 saying the MSRP is $99.99 "Inflation calculator" says the inflation adjusted price is $955 with an 855% inflation rate since then.
Man, imagine going into a store today and paying 1000 bucks for this!

I have in my collection a "new in box" Sony STA-11 stereo "adaptor" & amplifier unit that appears to be compatible with your TFM-116a. The instruction booklet, warranty card and a "5-year transistor warranty" card are included. It seems to have never been used, but the box and paper items are somewhat water damaged. The speaker grille cloth is also stained, unfortunately.
I put batteries in the adaptor(this is how Sony spells it, on unit and in the instructions!) unit, and it seems to work. Some hiss and dirty volume control noise are audible. I never had a radio with a multiplex jack to try it out with. I couldn't see any date codes, appears to be late sixties-early seventies vintage. Very high quality components used, mostly 5% resistors on MPX board, and no Elna caps. Has transformer-coupled 1W amplifier board and a 4" speaker.

The MPX out is there for a special secondary speaker with built in decoder so that you can have stereo sound.😃

That's pretty cool. So does the radio then assume (through a switch in the jack) the role of one channel through the multiplex adapter inside the second speaker?

SONY made brilliant radios, but always used feeble 1.5w speakers, yea those switch terminals you have to use a pair of pliers and slightly twist them

I lean towards nichicon and Panasonic. Although I do t like the purple ones made in the 70s and 80s, the modern ones seem to be well made.
Just gotta get 105 degree and at least 5khr or more lifetime.

@@JordanPier I do like Nichicon and have many Nippon Chemi-Con that seem to be going strong since the 90's, so I like those as well. I use my Fluke and Blue ESR to verify.

Grind the stupid terminals down so they aren't wider than the switch bezel.
