This movie is so unique and charming. I also love the idea that a young, beautiful couple dies tragically but everything turns out to be just fine in the end. This will always be one of my favorite movies
People seem to forget that the real protagonists of this movie are Adam and Barbara. Beetlejuice is a secondary character, and he has a lot less screen time. Michael Keaton steals the show, yes, but the plot does not revolve around him but around Alec and Geena.
Beetle Juice is the antagonist. The reason the marketing revolves around him is because Keaton stole the show. They knew he would be everyone’s favorite character and part of the film.
I love the subtle indication that either Barbara or Adam were sterile (I get the feeling from how hurt Barbara looked at the comment she miscarried at some point). It’s not only interesting character development but strengthens their relationship with Lydia as surrogate parents.
People say the Beetlejuice snake scene was scary, but for me it was when the Maitlands died. They died so sudden and without warning. Plus, they didn't pass away in a quick way either, considering they drowned. It was just so ominous that death could happen at any moment when you least expect it.
At least they were together, even in the afterlife, I mean how bad could it really be, if you still have your true 🧀 Love ? When I was 8, I knew a couple like the Maitland's, the Tumineas, and they had a 9 year old son, both parents died in a horrible automobile accident, years later, I saw the son, he was now a Police Officer, I asked if he was Frank and Phyllis son, he said yes, and I told him how their loss was something I never got over. The look of pure hatred from him was scary, down to this day, I wondered how he did not shoot me right then and there. But they were very nice people.
You make an excellent point. I thought the scariest scenes were Barbara tearing her face off, the exorcism scene and the scene when Barbara and Adam were morphing their faces into freaky monsters.
I think the most horrifying aspect of this movie, other than Mrs. Dietz's so-called remodel, is the fact that someone, despite their constant assertions, was trying to the sell the house out from under them
With that someone exploiting the deaths of Adam and Barbara Maitland to make the sale. That just REEKS of professional misconduct. Jane should have her realtor license revoked for that shady business.

"Functional Perimeters vary from manifestation to manifestation." Essentially, each haunting is different and each ghost only gets a specific area to dwell in, you go outside those perimeters, you break over into the world of the dead as you can only remain in the living world in a place where your particular manifestation (or haunting) can exist. For the Maitland's, it's their family home as it is the place that means the most to them.
That also implies that it’s not always a geophysical area they are bound to but could also be bound to an object. Instead of being stuck to a house, they could instead be attached to a painting and could haunt within a certain radius of where ever that painting would be at any one moment. Other ghosts could be able to haunt entire forests and the trees and timber from that forest, or even entire islands or continents. They left themselves with a lot of room to work with when they wrong that book so they could potentially play around with ideas and situations in future sequels. I feel like we may see a 3rd movie within 2 years.

The irony of that bumper sticker is killing me and even though the only time you can get a decent look at it is if you pause after the car falls into the river, the people who made this movie were geniuses for those who actually took the time to look at it.
The fact that I’ve watched this movie so many times, I actually understand what the handbook is actually saying. In layman’s terms, 6:37 boils down to where and how long a ghost is bound to the area they haunt differs for everyone.
In other words, you can haunt this place where you died as long as you like, depending on who you are, until you go to your proper afterlife. Seems simply easy to understand, but too bad the handbook is written by dead bureaucrats.
Did anyone noticed the dog's fur color was black and white the same colors as Beetlejuice's suit? Maybe it was a subtle hint that Beetlejuice somehow manipulated events in his favor to cause the Maitlands to crash.
I think they said in the Broadway show that he was watching them. But they died from falling through the floor. Much easier than staging a car crash on stage.
6:07 “You know what? I don’t think we survived the crash.” I can definitely picture Maniac Magee’s parents (as ghosts) saying that after drowning in the P&W trolley crash in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania.
