- It’s a wonderful companion piece to my upload ‘Yuri Soloviev, Natalia Makarova - 'Zephyr et Flore' (Evocation of a Pre-Romantic Era Ballet)’ of the same year (1964) which came from the Russian documentary ‘The History of Russian Ballet’.

This footage is of course Yuri Soloviev and Natalia Makarova performing a pas de deux from 'Chopiniana' (1964).
I was prompted to upload my footage seeing the performances documentary, again, from which it comes posted by Ralph Sayers on a ballet site I belong to 'Les Balletomanes'.
Particularly strange I’ve not posted it before as as I’ve had the footage for some time.
I guess it’s a case of better late that never!

Видела на сцене Макарову в Жизели с Барышниковым, это уникальное исполнение. Соловьева видела в Спящей с несравненной Аллочкой Сизовой. Помню всю жизнь, вот это были настоящие спектакли, с настоящими АРТИСТАМИ балета.
А мне повезло в Мариинке увидеть танец других королев Вишневой, Лопаткиной, Захаровой и Махалиной, Вагановыми скучать не дадут...

@@user-ld7rq3by1y крайне удивлен, вы же с Питера и хорошо знаете, что Лопаткина западными критиками признана лучшей Одеттой, если вы смотрели этот балет, а я сомневаюсь, то там прыжки не основные, Вишнёва носит титул Божественная, наверное тоже прыжки не на первом месте, Захарова и Махалина в представлении не нуждаются, есть у нас гимнастка в балете - Осипова, но со временем выпускница московского училища не только будет удивлять прыжками...

i think almost my favourite performance of the ballet - everything works together, technically and expressively - it's a tricky ballet to express as it is a general feeling - romantic reverie - rather than emtions and feeling related to a specific story.

Holy Mother Of God! What in the world can one say? Makarova at her best. But Soloviev... He dances the ballerina's part as well as his own. No need to even watch the ballerina. No need to hear the music either. He is a miraculous dancer.
Yes it's true that Soloviev is expressive in a way male dancers don't usually allow themselves to be but we don't see much of him, Anyway here his part is inseparable from the woman - and for once the music is really great.

Dear John - I looked for you on the internet in case i could find a way of getting in touch with you - for one reason only: I wrote an essay on Fonteyn with great love and concentration and I have no idea where I might be able to get it published. It took me ten years to arrive at my interpretation. Do you have any idea of a suitable magazine? I'm willing to give you my e-mail address but not without your permission and to send you the essay which you are free to like or dislike.. Not the magazine produced by Dance Books that used to be at Charing Cross.- Most ballet magazines deal only with current events.
sadly i am not as familiar as i sued to be about dance publications - my area is semiotic theory and i know the mainlines that publish things in that area. i'd be very interested in reading your essay on Fonteyn - i would return my email address if you care to send me yours. :)

It's worth mentioning a biography of Yuri Soloviev is coming out in 2018 by Joel Lobenthal and Lisa Whitaker (who was a close friend of Yuri's). It's high time this great artist is given the detailed history of his life and career that he deserves.

Soloviev and Makarova in Les Sylphides!! It's like a dream no?
Beautiful. It's a privilege to see Makarova in her younger years. My only complaint is with whoever cut her feet out of frame at 1:30. Arrgh!
I never saw her in her youth but saw her in on your toes in the 80s which obviously completely different was very entertaining. Any chance to see a legend🤷♂️

+Susan Baskerville so many wonderful performances and characters created - curiously i saw her with Nureyev dancing 'SL' out doors at the Cour Carrée at the Louvre in Paris - the dancers huddled round outdoor gas fires to keep warm when not on stage - we were to the side and could interestingly see the performance and in a sense 'backstage' at the same time.

yes, so beautifully nuanced with the music in mind - unfussed and beautifully leisurely laid out - i find myself watching this over and over. and the 'mood' created is so right for the ballet - i remember the first time i saw this i realized it was pretty much what i imagined the ballet to be in my mind.

That was absolutely exquisite! I love the choreography especially. Perfectly captures the fairy realm of their encounter. She is my favorite of all time. Chiefly because of the deliberateness with which she draws lines in space with her hands throughout, never once dropping their vibratto. Brava!

yes Makarova is particularly exquisite here - and captures the atmosphere of the ballet, that Tamara Karsavina called 'romantic reverie'.

Thank you for this extraordinary glimpse into another time. Makarova is truly exquisite and so is Soloviev ialong with being a wonderful partner. Both express the elusive perfume of this ballet. Makarova is the reason I love ballet. I first saw her in 1971 in Boston and several times later in N.Y. as well as hundreds of times here on YT! This is one of the best ever treasures on youtube.
i can't imagine a more perfect performance on so many levels. i first saw her here in Australia in 1974 with Baryshnikov - 'Giselle' and 'Don Q' - really unforgettable!
Dear Alex, Another absolute gem. You are so right, Makarova captures the 'romantic reverie' so well in this pdd. She used to dance with Yuri Soloviev a lot and they made an attractive dance couple. It is interesting to compare this version with the colour film of Galina Ulanova in 'Les Sylphides' that we talked about previously. Something I love about ballet is how the same steps can look so different when performed by two different ballerinas.
I find Karsavina in Sylvia very romantic! Much more than this chopin/Fokin part.

This was on the Yuri Soloviev Facebook page a while back. Time marches on and I wish some documentary filmmaker would interview remaining persons who knew/danced with Yuri and make a coherent film about him and his life and art. Too much of his legacy is in a few videos and the fact of his death rather than his greatness as a dancer.

There was another version of Les Sylphides/Chopiniana posted on UA-cam (in color) which looks as if it was done for tv and I think it's from not that long before Yuri died. Really wish it would make a "re-appearance" because I'd love to see it again. These two are magic here.
What is even more 'beyond comprehension' is that this was 51 years ago...

Because, I believe a poetic perfection is very rare and elusive. If you look away some seconds, you loose the momentum. That's why I'm still pestering around Mariinsky performances though it's decline is obvious.

Maria Kotchetkova posted this a few days ago. I had not ever seen it before. Within a few seconds it became one of my favorite things ever. :-)
I was about 18 or 19, a callow American kid with no interest in ballet. I turned on the TV to the local PBS channel and they showed the brief introductory clip announcing the program that was about to be aired, which was, I believe, "Baryshnikov at the White House". It was very brief, an excerpt or out-take from a moment from the dance. One sweep of her leg and I was transfixed. It was Makarova. From that moment I loved ballet. I feverishly watched the program--"Who is she?--and seized on her name to remember it.
...Makarova is still my favorite. The lyricism of her line. Rubatto, musicality, lyricism, tone, narrative flow--her phrasing reminds me of my favorite pianist, Benno Moiseiwitsch.
This performance is exquisite. And Soloviev is magnificent--power, delicacy, superlative partnering, musicality.
Indeed, as you say, poetic reverie.

i have a lot of old footage and looks over it regularly for things to post - i had forgotten to upload this footage as it had been on my old YT channel and i thought i'd put it here already
me too - one of my favourite ballet performances on film - quite perfect on every level - just watched it again with renewed pleasure - i think it is Makarova's best performance in this ballet.
i grew up with the Fonteyn-Nureyev performance on film - till i saw this and my imaginings of what the ballet could be escalated exponentially - atmosphere, phrasing [which you detailed so well] - with technique to be able to realize the chore in a way that Fonteyn could not do fully at that stage of her career).

on my upload 'Tamara Karsavina Talks of Performing in Le Prelude in 'Les Sylphides' with Pavlova and Nijinsky' the ballerina used 'romantic reverie' probably referencing back to it's original title in St Petersburg 'Rêverie Romantique: Ballet sur la musique de Chopin' - before it was presented there again as 'Chopiniana'
but then the National Ballet of Canada on their site currently uses 'poetic reverie' saying "Les Sylphides is a poetic reverie brought to life by ballet technique that is evanescent and timeless".

A lot of thanks to have the opportunity to see Soloviev who was a amazing dancer, not a star like Noureeiv, il did not leave Soviet Union and of course he was not in Paris’ nights with some “people”.
never seen that version before, pure heaven. She was like a little feather and he was a perfect match. Hope here is more footage of him hiding somewhere. Many different versions out there they all dance the same steps but make it thier own peice but this one is exeptional.

@@JohnRaymondHall just watched her with Dowell who evidently was her favourite partner at the rb, clip from manon bedroom scene, again 2 wonderful dancers complimenting each other. Noticed no ear whacking, didnt need to when your that graceful.
@@jillgooner yes, Dowell had a great reputation as a partner - i remember in an interview him saying he had to work at this aspect of dancing. Makarova spoke about Dowell's partnering in that four part series 'Ballerina'

Such a delight to see Makarova when she was so young, but a lot of the affectation in her performance that was appropriate to this type of ballet was something she had to shed when she came west. I think she became an even more powerful dancer because she defected.

i have not uploaded 'History Of The Russian Ballet' - in fact there are five films in a series following the development of ballet in Russia. actually i am not sure i am able to upload longer videos like these. so i tend to upload bits and pieces.

Well, this is so different from original Fokine. Have to see Alicia Markova documentary film in Paris Opera Ballet couching principal POB dancers as she was couched in Les Syphides by Fokin in New York during 2WW. Les Sylphides`s POB dancers are Elisabeth Platel and young Herve Moreau.
being filmed at the Kirov i wonder if the differences reflect that it is the original 'Chopiniana' for the Kirov rather than the ballet reworked for the West and Diaghilev's Ballets Russes as 'Les Sylphides'? speaking of changes to the work, i saw a version with three poets: aleximageshare.blogspot.com.au/2017/03/blog-post.html
"Three Poets", that is Cleo Nardi and he was producer of "PAVLOVA AND HER COMPANY" film 1930 and that was FOKIN arrangement. So Fokine by Fokine. It is only important what is Fokin idea for this ballet and his strong demands. That is possible to see only in film "Alicia Makarova in POB". Today that is only autentic interpretation of Fokine from leg to leg ....Chopinana is only SOVIET version of Fokine ballet and is so different from original. It is not is it better, it is only how close is to original. There is no problem with every new version of his ballet but must be AFTER FOKIN not BY FOKINE. That is my point.
thanks for that background - appreciated. i was wondering who had made the version with the three poets - in a Facebook group we had been discussing the differences between the 'Chopiniana' Fokine created for the Kirov and 'Les Sylphides' which was in a sense a re-working for the Ballets Russes. was the Markova POB film you mentioned Dominique Delouche's 'Markova, la légende' ? you make a very good point - that Russian versions are 'after Fokine' as the original is lost. :)
yes, it's so interesting seeing her coach Elisabeth Platel and Herve Moreau - her memory seems very good - so whatever version she was taught she probably transmitted it accurately.

@@JohnRaymondHall its a shame that a lot of dancers now dont appear to be as graceful and are so athletic. Different era i suppose but i do miss it. We have some great dancers in the royal ballet now and pleased many are brits. Yasmin naghdi is wonderful and as for men William bracewell is tall but so elegant. But miss the good old days.
@@jillgooner yes, with the development of extreme technique sometimes expressiveness and artistry gets lost. some dancers do have both, like Natalia Osipova whose 'Giselle' is one of the greatest of all time, in my opinion
@@JohnRaymondHall i think nunez is still a wonderful dancer no matter who she dances with even though they are often 20 yrs her junior. Her acting is wonderful and always lights up the stage. Popping out tonight to see swan lake at enb
See how that goes! There productions arnt quite on par with the royal. Alina cojocaru was another one who was a beautiful delicate performer but no longer dancer as you know . Another dancer who gave the impression of weightlessness.
It's nice.
But I prefer Rudy and Margot dansing les Sylphides: exquisite.
