Season 4 Episode 12
"Blow Up"
First aired 10 December, 1967, ABC-TV (USA)
After using an untested emergency breathing apparatus, Nelson's increasingly paranoid actions put the entire crew in danger.
This high definition video is a recording of an HDTV broadcast of newly-transferred and restored film. The episode has been shortened by the distributor to the current standard length for one-hour episodes through the use of cuts and increased frame rate. Additional audio and video augmentation by TooleMan TV, 2024.
Love these Nelson or Crane being taken over or losing their mind episodes. They can be really diabolically evil bastards. 🤣
I see why Allen kept ordering these crazy Nelson episodes. Basehart's performances are nothing short of really, really outstanding. You can see he's inspiring the other actors, too. Hedison has never been better. Great episode! Thank you continuing to post.
I they wish would make s movie sgaim off voyage to bottom off the sea it would be hit
@@BryanShanahan not by Hollwood. They have screwed up enough classics already.
In his early career, Richard Basehart was given roles of murderers, psychos and violent characters. He was afraid of being typecast in that....
@@donaldcrabtree6259 Oops!
Basehart in The Satan Bug 1965. I expect we’ve all seen it but it’s worth another watch.
Admiral Nelson is rather scary in this, the poor crew😢
@jackpayne5101.
Were you hiding behind the sofa?
David Hedison said of Richard Basehart that he was a sweet lovely man, very intelligent but really very shy, you would not believe it would you watching this.😳
Known actors playing vilains are the complete opposite in real life.
These shows look great after 55 years
All the action, explosions, destruction and drama that a growing boy needs! Both Allen and Roddenberry knew their shit! 🤩💥
Did anyone notice that Captain Crane left the key in the prison gate lock after leaving the doctor inside?
The ending is somehow a bit unsatisfying. In a matter of seconds, they establish that the "whole thing" was started by the breathing apparatus, with no explanation whatsoever. A bit of fresh air and everything is hunky dory. See you next week!
Yes I thought that it does tend to end just like that in a matter of minutes, it would take me a while to get used to the Admiral again.😮
Looked like an early asthma inhaler
@@mariewiseman2962
The show was made in 1968
Sometimes endings seen rushed but no doubt if they had more time the endings would be better and longer but they had a rigid time slot for each episode.
The Admiral "under the influence" reminded me of a relative (actually 2) of mine (sadly) one on meth. the other on cocaine Men I loved and trusted who turned on me. I didn't stick around for the abuse., and we haven't spoken in over 2 yrs. It broke my heart to see that hate in the eyes and complete irrationality and paranoia. Scary. The drug destroys the person and takes over the mind. Inhalers like the admiral used often have steroids in them or other stimulants to jack up the lung action. That could have been what happened to the admiral in an extreme case. They just called it gas. Good episode and great acting. Hadn't seen this one before. It was bittersweet for me to watch it. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you for sharing. Must be. Very painful for you.
@@lesleyhughes4969 Yes, it was and is painful. Thank you. I heard someone say recently "You have to judge things by what is, not by what was." It's true b/c I kept holding on and hoping things would get
better for "old times' sake" but it never did and still is the same. Sometimes people get lost in their minds and don't come back. Sad for all concerned.
Paranoia wll destroy ya. Very good acting in this episode.
Basehart gives a great performance again .
I don't know how you restore these but keep up the great work!!
Near the end of the episode, the door that the admiral entered is the one that usually goes to the reactor room; the window just to the right is covered in this episode since it is being used in this scene to enter the missile room. He locks the door but the missile room has a second door; most of the time the story forgets that it is there. Possibly by season four they had less space for the sets, so things were modified.
Corr blimey! Give me a big hairy monster anytime, the Admiral is really scary in this one. 😮
One of my favourites. I pretty much know this one word for word. LOL Basehart really takes it to the wall here. I'll wager it was very freeing as opposed to some of the later scripts. At least, this one made sense. Breathing in some noxious gas that makes him paranoid. Some scenes have been abbreviated, of course, but as always, great job TooleMan
Considering the.absurd plots in Season.4 Fighting Lobster Men and silly monsters He must have been pleased to do some real acting
@user-sq4jz9up6g no kidding. I'm in the business but never watched the show until, here, now. I wish I had because I had a nice one on one chat with Hedison and I had wish I had been able to ask him what quick, quiet talks the two had about tgexreally bad scripts and what was said. I'd live to know. "HI, David. What do you think of this week's shit?" "It's a living." "I guess that's one way to look at it.".
This is a superb episode. The Admiral’s paranoia is perfectly portrayed and an example of the brilliance of the scriptwriters is the tense moment at 31:38 when Chief Sharkey backs up ‘Chips’ command to the crew to “get back to your stations” and nobody moves. Sheer perfection!
R.B. WAS A GOOD ACTOR. HE'S A GOOD BAD GUY. BTW A .N. CAN FIGHT!!!
This week on, When Admirals Turn Bad,..
Seaview on the Edge of Forever.
More like, "The Admiral Within".
It seems to me they ought to provide beefed-up security for that Circuit Room instead of just an unlocked, brightly labeled, wooden-core door. Lots of mischief happens in a lot of episodes because anybody can just walk in.
They made up for it by keeping the empty brig padlocked shut. You can't be too careful!
You’re not kidding; that circuitry room blows up more than my hot-headed older Brother! 🤯
First time I saw this show since 1970.
Wonder Woman 1977 Season 2 Ep 4 Bermuda Triangle Crisis. Make Blow Up the Submarine-Seaview Enemy (Like This Submarine with another Name) with a Mine under the sea (Pool scene).
Poor Chip takes quite the lashing. 😞
I've been wondering of Nelson harbors some deep-seated dislike for Morton.
@@rapsnik Nelson has a good relationship with his senior officers. But if you didn’t know better, you’d think he had it in for Morton after watching this.
@@rapsnikI hope you're wrong,but sometimes I wonder...
@@marilynkozak17I know. I'm seeing this now!
Fabulous episode with great actors, Richard Basehart and David Hedison are wonderful, many thanks for sharing it!
Poor Kowalski, the Admiral was so horrible to him.🫤
That coffee was horrible!!!!
Im sorry.. I found this comical at times.. Esp when Admiral Nelson beat the crap out of 3 younger guys...twice. It was so schticky sweet
That's OK. Amusing observation.
Once again, thank you for the upload.
Great episode. Liked the glimpse into the command hierarchy.
I'm from the middle of the UK
Welcome aboard!
Greetings from hot and humid central Arkansas and best wishes to you and the UK!
@mariewiseman2962.
Great. We all needed to know that, and now we can all sleep well in our beds tonight.
ix nay on the inhaler......
1:51 Funny, those conduits are obviously spiral wrapped cardboard tubes. But you know what? Back in 1967 our broadcast TV signals were so bad we were ecstatic if we got one grainy image instead of a double image. And that ain't no kidding. We would have never noticed they were cardboard back then.
You're right. But in the old days, there was also no way to replay a scene to check out something that flashed by while you watched your favorite show on your 19" TV.
@@TooleManTV So true. Did you ever think you'd see the day? It's like discovering these shows all over again. Like watching them for the first time.
@@rael5469 It really is like the first time in a lot of ways. I'm more... um, *mature* now, but the new color and clarity are beautiful and demonstrate the high production value hidden in these old shows.
I think maybe the Doctor suspected something was wrong when he received a mighty great wallop from the Admiral.😅
The second the admin went near the brig door. Craine should have shoved him in for safe keeping to figure out what’s going on. Just saying
@PARTYON70.
Don't you mean "Admiral"?
Yes sorry
Question. He inhaled rocket fuel. Could that have caused the medical issue or a combination of the fuel and the breather
@pinetree9343.
You should have been the ship's doctor, not the quack they had on board.
Great tv series a classic
36:58 Charles Lawton as Captain Bligh
' Sir' 😳
To a kid like me back then this was very good...that's all I will say.
@drdepena1958.
Good! You don't have much to say anyway.
En español y vivo por favor gracias 🙏
@juanrangdez868.
Even in Spanish, you make no sense!
Basehart lookin like Arthur Godfrey ova there...
Even in his paranoiac state the Admiral would only trust the Captain such is their bond, which I thought was lovely!🥹
