Solid examples and a great explanation. This is really helping me solve shadow areas in a painting I'm attempting. Many thanks for this and the many other videos. Best Regards, Ted Hawkes
The idea is that color is effected by light, so a sunlit red barn turns to red orange because of the sunlight and red violet because of the shadow. On a cloudy day a red barn would be more of a true red because there isn't bright sunlight effecting the color. Hope that helps.
Excellent video school and amazing pictures of landscapes. Thank you for your video channel😊👌 Greetings from the Czech Republic/Europe. Our country is very culturally and artistically rich (Josef Mánes, Antonín Slavíček, J.Cimrman.
Do you treat the mid darks as a shadow tone wash or a Solid opaque tone when you apply your underpaiinting or block in Thanks again for your time I truly love your videos and content your a true Genius ✌️🎨🎭
When I draw the subject in the first stage, I'm using transparent washes using three values. When I block in with color I use opaque color but try to keep the shadows thinner than the lights.
Super! Well Thank you so much I think I'm on the Right track again I'm trying to get back into plein air painting again its been a few years I'm a bit rusty ✌️ your channel has refreshed my memory and fired me up again I should have never taken such a long break it's been a bit of a struggle to get back in the groove but I'm getting there Thanks again for sharing your amazing gifts and incredible videos there very informative and inspiring 🤘❤️🔥
Really nice painting you did there at the end Phil. I like how you emphasized the barn a little more than the photo by bringing it closer. From my observation Phil it looks like the value of the mountains and the water stream in front is close to the same value? Great work on the painting and the presentation of this lesson. Thanks so much!
I always learn something new in your videos.,you’re a great instructor

Hi Mike, The final painting is by Aldro Hibbard, great painting
If the light level is low do you avoid painting a scene until it has better lighting conditions? just curious. Thanks for your time.
I do paint in all kinds of light. but I do prefer strong light. although a good cloudy day is hard to beat.
