  • I was shocked when I first tried this fixative made by Sennelier. Is this a solution to being able to "fix" pastel artwork? We will see! 🤗 🌼
    NOTE: Go to about five minutes into the video where you will see the results of the fixative application.
    For this demo, I used unsanded pastel paper (Canson MiTientes). I was able to achieve multiple layers, but helped the process along a bit by using fixative during the working stages.
    Have fun artists! And let me know what you think in the comments! 😊

    We're really glad you discovered that fixative! A good fixative can control loose dust and prevent it from depositing on the underside of framing glass without darkening colors. Some artists really saturate their pastels, thinking the goal is to prevent smudging, but most of the time the minimum effective amount is all that's needed. Great video with lots of good information- love it!

By the way, I have a video coming soon, where I will do a comparison between four different fixatives. Enjoyed your demo! I agree with you that pastel is addictive, I paint on Canson and love the paper & variety of colors. I have been using Spectrafix to allow me to build up more layers. Unfortunately, the pump spray bottle can spurt & drip but it dries clear. Nice product with no odor! Elizabeth Mowry was also one of my favorite pastel artists. I have all of her books.

    I am so inspired to seriously try pastel painting. I really appreciate your tutorials and all the tips and techniques along the way. Ive watched several other pastel artists whos work is really beautiful too however they do not give enough true instruction along the way for us newbies as to why their doing things. Im a 71 yr old trained oil painter from the 70s/ 80s .just now picking my art back up and trying new mediums acrylic painting and pastels. Love them all including collage. However i have a feeling pastels make take center stage as i can no longer spend hrs at a time standing or sitting due to arthritis in back. The ability of being able to produce a piece of art thats so pretty in such a short time is exciting to me. Thank you susan for your beautiful art and videos. And as a christian really appreciate your christian input as well. GOD BLESS !

    Wow! Its really cool to have a workshop. My living room is my bedroom and my working zone as well 😁.
    I love your works. They are deep and clear. I realise that you have a great talent. And high choice of materials results on the final version.
    I don't have any art education. But I have been drawing and painting all my life.
    Professional materials are expensive, so I buy them occasionally, sometimes piece by piece. And mix colours to get new ones.
    I draw on a board fixing paper on it. Now I can sit for a short time, but almost all of my last year works have been draw in a bed. I shared the video on my Facebook page where I drew a picture laying in the bed.

    I've enjoyed using Canson MiTientes paper for my work, this was in the days before sanded papers! I was taught to use small amounts of fixative on passages I needed to work over but leave the last layers unfixed it helps to keep the vibrancy of the colours. I have to say that Sennelier fixative looks a pretty good product as you couldn't see any darkening at all.
    A small tip for you, you haven't any fixative to hand & you're working on a practice piece you can at a push use unscented hairspray. I always go outdoors whenever I spray, it's not good for the lungs!! An excellent painting Susan thank you, I'm looking forward to your next video :)

      @monetcafe  Рік тому +1

      I so appreciate that information! And that’s pretty much how I work with fixative normally… Spraying it a bit during the working process, but never at the end. And I’ve heard about the trick with hairspray, but I’ve never tried it. Probably because I never use hairspray… But maybe I need to buy some! Thanks again! I really appreciate your information.

      @@monetcafe Regarding the longevity of hairspray long term is a bit unknown? The hairspray tip I was told about after running out of fixative one weekend, it's always when the shops are shut ha! ha! lesson learned! I've used hairspray on practice charcoal drawings but I would never use it on a pastel painting that I was going to sell!!

      I guess my fixative application was pretty subtle within the video. If you go to five minutes into the video, you can see where I show the fixative and use it. I actually took it outside to spray it because I didn’t want to breathing in my studio. When I brought it back in, you can see that it didn’t even darken the painting! I was so impressed and I was able to get quite a bit more layering after spraying it. I have a new video coming very soon where I do more testing with this fixative and compare it to others. I think you’ll find that one educational and helpful. Thanks so much for your comment, Mike!

      Hi @marleytc2003, I never spray a fixative on a soft pastel painting since it always darkens the final image.
      To protect my final painting for shipping or storing, I place them in a clear plastic bag I get from www.clearbags.com/bags/flat/flap-tape/crystal-clear. I buy the bags a bit larger than standard sizes so I will have room for the painting and a piece of foamcore board cut to the size of the painting.
