I played at the highest levels of schoolboy rugby in England, many years ago & I think the game today is bigger stronger, quicker & better than its ever been. I love to see the youngsters of all nations play with passion it's fantastic. Maybe if I was a young man today I could of made it as a professional. Sadly 35yrs ago I wasn't from the right background . It was very very rare for anyone from a poor background to get anywhere in English Rugby. After taking part in week long trials me & 2 others from better backgrounds than me were asked to sign for the biggest club in the county Im from. I didn't sign as my parents had never drove or any hope of owning a car. So I had no way of travelling to the club for training or to play. The club is 40 miles from where I live. I'm pretty certain I would of been the 1st semi professional player from the area I live in which is quite a big area. So it fills me with a lot of happiness to see all these young players from all walks of life getting the chance to make it in the game. The magnificent Kiwi's are the ultimate school age players, the S. Africans let's say can be as brutal if not the most brutal team in the world. They have the knack of producing teams every so often that are a mix of both strength & sublime skills that are unmatched. It's usually the team that's better than the All blacks that becomes the world champions though.

That's also because they have a different mentality for training. At the age of 14 they start to go to the gym, in order to increase they're strength. In italy neither at the age of 18 they let you lift some wight, in fact I was 60 kg (when I have my rucksack full 😂) against people that weight about 90 kg and more.

south african school boy rugby has a huge steroid problem. this isnt coming from me, but from the 50% of south african schools that have players that pissed hot, the countless number of stories and accounts of doping from south africans and, from an eye test, it is almost impossible to get that big at such a young age without PED's.

But South Africa is a country of oversized people. You have the Afrikaners who had to endure arduous boat trips from Europe and dangerous treks inland, so only the best and strongest survived. Similarly you have the Xhosa, Zulu and even Swati who were warrior societies with emphasis on having large, strong young warriors together with natural athleticism and last the coloured community who have both the size and strength together with that athleticism. Physically gifted but not always disciplined. And we rely too much on size and not skills.

I enjoyed school boy rugby in the 80s, 1985 to 1989. Good memories, I remember many big boys at that time as well, 6 foot plus, 110 to 130 kgs, even some were heavier like big Bill Cavubati from Scots College. I remember playing Wesley college once, 1988, they were very big, I remember Waisake sotutu, he was playing 1st five that day, I'd say he was the biggest 1st Five in NZ those days lol. 1.9ish 110kg ish lol. We were happy because we won 33 to 3 against those big boys lol. Early 80s were the same, very big school boys. So I don't think the boys are any bigger, maybe more of the PEDS these days and for a wee while now.

      19. RG Snyman (Bulls) *May have already agreed terms with Munster at date of final
      22. Jantjies (Stormers)
The situation has somewhat changed now, but this is normal post-World Cup. The reality is that the strength of Springbok rugby will always remain in SA. Players will leave but the conveyor belt is good enough that they are quickly replaced by world-class players both at franchise and national level.
All of the 7 European based players in the match 23 were already very well established Springboks (or Blitzbok in the case of Kolbe) by the time they moved to Europe.

It's so strict in off season as well that every month you get tested and if you are positive you get a 2 year ban and get tested throughout your ban as well

Captain Hindsight chilly boy was still allowed to play in your domestic league even though he had been caught twice doping!
How can we take you guys seriously
Even your domestic clubs don’t do random drug testing due to money constraints so I can’t see how your even allowed to play international rugby.

The problem with SA rugby is that at school level kids are use to overpowering opposition. Then when they reach professional level where opposition have good basics and much better tackling technique they suffer. We need to introduce more skills in our rugby and not just rely on brute strength.
And no I am not saying these boys are not skilled. But if you watch NZ schools play there is so much soft touches to the game. How is it that we dominate them at school level but they beat us at a professional level? And please do not blame quota, because Malcom marx has been disgusting as a hooker and nobody calls him out. Mbonambi has been amazing for the boks.
