Man, I wish more VC channels made videos like this. Excellent editing and arrangement of stills, performances, and the recaps told from back home. Good takeaway models here for others who venture out to other countries and want to make videos to report about foreign experiences. Top drawer stuff here. Kudos!

Thanks, that’s very kind. Some days I’m able to battle the software to a draw.

Very eye opening and informative. The old fashioned jazz club thing seems to be alive and well in Vietnam.

Very much so. And we can’t figure out how they stay open because there are rarely cover charges and people don’t seem to drink much.

Glad you enjoyed it. I know there are a couple of stores in Da Nang but never made the trip up from Hoi An. Have to balance the itinerary with my wife’s interests too :-)

“Sturmfrei”, haha, that’s a good name. It’s German and means “parents are away, now we can do anything we want”.
Thank you for an enlightening video ❤

Thanks for sharing your Vietnam trip! East Coasting happens to be one of my favorite Mingus dates. Give it a chance; it may grow on you. Bill Evans’ contribution is exquisite, and Mingus loved his playing. Oh, and Portrait of Cannonball was the debut of Nardis, which Miles wrote for the date, even though he never played it that I know of. Bill Evans made it a part of his repertoire for the rest of his career.

Thank you for the encouragement and I must say, I haven’t really had a moment to give the Mingus record a “deep listen” yet; mostly I’ve played it while doing other things. But it’s Boxing Day, so perhaps the occasion has arrived!

Listening again now. You could be right! Also: the liner notes by Nat Hentoff are fantastic. Talk about a lost art.

Interesting! Yes I am sure that despite the
government’s intentions it would not have been that easy to erase a century of outside influence. Thank you for sharing this information!

@@TenMinuteRecordReviews doubt govt really care , as if it was that serious my grand father won't have acquire and have those book ( he was army officer and later govt official ) fun fact during the war up north folk do listen to southern broadcaster and even BBC thought it was officially ban but no one enforce the rule even the local police guy that near my grandparents house also listen to those channel . For the southern broadcaster they mostly listen for the comic story time ( kiếm hiệp a Chinese story written by Hongkong writer that popular back then ) and music . This what made Vietnam unique unlike china or Soviet where they are more tight on law during the cold war

I loved this video. I really enjoy seeing your travel focused videos (like japan/vietnam). I wonder have you heard of any Vietnamese vinyl jazz releases ?

    • @TenMinuteRecordReviews

Thanks very much. Pretty thin on the ground, would be my guess. I have Quyen Van Minh’s album from 2000, called Nhung Tinh Khuc (Jazz Style), but on CD.
Just checked Discogs and they list precisely five (5) jazz vinyl releases of Vietnamese provenance, two of which are 7” singles. So I’m thinking yeah, thin on the ground!

    • @ibanezbuyer

Oh I didn't expect such a quick and direct reply. Thank you very much for looking, that sounds thin on the ground! So many of your videos are so rich is research, I was amazed by how much you knew about Isao Suzuki, I didnt know any of that having been on a bit of a Three Blind Mice hunt this year , so it was fascinating to hear. It might be too much to suggest but I imagine a TBM label video would be very interesting, as I believe they have an interesting backstory.@@TenMinuteRecordReviews

Very nice video, it let me with wanting know more! There are in Vietnam musicians related to the avant gard jazz as there are in Japan (as an example the saxophone player Kaoru Abe) and China (with the multi-reedist Lao Dan)? Maybe musicians involved in creating music after the last Coltrane or Albert Ayler ... or that mix jazz and European avant garde music ... how can I take informations even from a distance?

    • @TenMinuteRecordReviews
      @TenMinuteRecordReviews  7 місяців тому +1

Thank you. The jazz scene is active but still quite small, or at least that was my impression. We didn’t hear anything that was close to avant garde but if you wanted to know more, you might get in touch with Binh Minh jazz club. As noted in the video Quyen Van Minh is still actively involved and if there is any place that would know of the different jazz scenes in VN, that might be it. (I get the feeling the folks at Long Waits are also fairly serious about jazz too, based on the info they put out.)
