Your criticism of not knowing when events trigger is actually a reason I've liked farming games since playing Harvest Moon 64. I like slowly building up everyone's affection and randomly running into events as I run around doing chores 😊

Actually, they did add few things and fixed bugs that included memories event. They added Hell Mode, Marriage event, Character story, more scenes, and couple DLCs. They also change crafting system ,so you now can do craft even at higher level without getting killed like I mean crafting is much easier than original. I love RF/HM series and Stardew Valley, Maybe I will try few more farming games after I once I get Steam Deck 2 and Switch 2.

I have always believed that A Wonderful Life is definitely NOT for everyone. It can be such a needlessly obtuse and bizarre experience. So I don’t blame you at all for bouncing.
I agree with a lot of your other remarks too, at least for the games I’ve played. In particular, Doraemon SoS is SUCH a gorgeous game to look at it, but it’s very slow to start, and it loses steam after a while and becomes a slog.
I will say that I love Harvestella though. It caught me completely by surprise how much I fell in love with the characters and the surprising amount of humor. Plus the story just gets absolutely bonkers. But I admit that the combat is a letdown. Very simplistic, which is unfortunate in a game that is like 75% RPG, 25% farm sim.
Absolutely respect all your opinions, and would love to see more content like this! ❤

And I 100% agree, I don't enjoy many games most of people did enjoy and I barely share it with someone, because I feel almost ashamed that I don't like these "works of art!". I think that no matter how good the game is (based on reviews), the only important thing is for you to enjoy it. I don't necessarily agree with every single game you mentioned, but I can appreciate your reasoning and tastes. Thank you for being authentic. I also like reading the comments of others about their own experiences with games. We tend to want to be positive and justify our purchases, so it's nice to come clean and admit what didn't live up to the hype. For me, lately, it's Palia; and No Place Like Home.

for me, after playing my time at sandrock, it was SO hard to get back to portia. i love the story and the characters so much, but the mechanics were so clunky when i tried playing again. i agree with what you said about portia on the switch. i started on the switch, and playing on pc afterwards was such a breath of fresh air. everything ran infinitely better.
i also got really frustrated with the trigger events in rune factory 4. the fact that it could be really difficult to unlock an entire arc of the story was a bit off putting, but at least the wiki was helpful. i'm still mixed on how to feel about the crafting systems (for both 4 and 5). i feel like i would enjoy it more if the hidden mechanics of crafting were explained more in depth since it does seem like you need to know them in order to finish the full story/game in both. i will say, i liked the story of 4 a lot more than 5, but i do think 5 has the better characters by far. i'm very excited to see what the next two rune factory games come up with.
personally, games i regret buying are roots of pacha, kynseed, and the more recent story of seasons games. i just can't get into them for whatever reason, and i don't feel like forcing myself to get past the first couple of hours in any of them.

I’m not too sensitive to it as long as it’s moving along. Less than 60 fps? I don’t care. 30 fps? Fine. 20? Ok. Portia moved at about 2. I also saw people saying they had no problem but I can’t see how it runs so differently on the same system but they must have had really good luck!

Funny that I’m finding this video just after I finished Harvestella since I’m looking for information on the next game I might pick up. I quite enjoyed Harvestella but it does take a good bit for it to pick up steam and the combat does get fairly repetitive, there are a wide variety of classes to pick but you do have to grind up each individually so if you don’t like the grind it will discourage job experimentation. Despite its flaws I still enjoyed it quite a bit but i know it’s not for everyone.

The newest entry fixed the control problem and while there are still trigger events (cause it’s still SoS hah), the story is a lot more clear. Whenever you need to progress, you get the cutscene usually first thing in the morning telling you what needs to happen. There are lots of QOL changes and more accessible prices for customizing! Totally respect your opinions and I agree with your take on SoS AWL. I will say that the first year is the most hectic and busy for me, I went in wanting to make a 'perfect' year 1 save so that I can go back to it to get respective husbands. Meaning that getting money and getting prepared in year 2 is a lot. Then yeah year 2 is fun, but dear lord by year 3 and on the game is a slog. And a big portion is nothing new gets added, no new festivals, your spouse basically says the same 2 lines till you die and just felt lacking. You'll get the occasional villager mentioning your child or relationship but that is it. And it really dulls my exp as a whole, even if I had fun in year 1-2, how it drags on sours it. So far SoS games have been lacking in that dialogue department which is crazy when I see things like SoS Trio of Towns have so much dialogue to throw at you. I just miss it.

Speaking as someone who is VERY nostalgic for the gc version (It was actually my favorite for a very long time), I agree with you on SoS AWL remake. I thought it was watered down and they focused too much on making the models "cute" style. That took away from the experience of a more realistic type of simulator that I enjoyed on the gamecube. Seriously, that horse model is all levels of wrong in my opinion

I actually was weary about the Wonderful Life remake and chose to wait. I remembered that while the original was one of my first farming games, I had issues with it. Then I got Harvest Moon DS and let’s just say, I got really tired of the Valley and characters at this point so I really don’t have a big sentimental attachment.
For me, a cozy game I regret was actually Story of Seasons Pioneers due to a lot of reasons.
Maybe Rune Factory 5 but that could be I just haven’t played enough of it.
I have a couple of the games on your lists but I wouldn’t say I regret getting the games, I just haven’t played them very much as other games took my attention (Coral Island and Sun Haven being my biggest).
I will say though that I really wish I get more fantasy farming games but with less rpg. What I mean is lets have the magic and different races of Rune Factory and Sun Haven, but without the whole World saving, lives at stake quests/storylines and more of just creating the farm, building up relationships, et cetra.
I also am a little sick of Rune Factory Amnesia plot and would like more games that use art styles graphic of Coral Island and Palia instead of pixel art, which threw me off of Stardew and Mine Craft if I am honest (even though I like Sun Haven and Roots of Pacha). But that is just me.

Roots of pacha is great! I'm waiting for it to be on Switch,so I can play it again 😅 Also I love RF 4 and Rune factory 3 od Ds, will deff. buy it on Switch; but I never liked 3D farming games like RF 5 ( too much space, small decorations, too vibrant colors, but will give it a try again soon. Frontiers was okay though), Harvest Moon for PSP ( also I could never get into any HM game, quickly running out of stamina, lack of things to do besides watering crops and talking to people + I felt it was preeetty tedious and slow to rise friendship points with characters, even Rune factory 1, movement being sluggish like in HM games, was more enjoyable 😅 )

When I mentioned this on discord I got dissed because it's a "me" problem due to how badly I am confused on how to play with the early on control in the game.. (just to clarify with KB+m not controller)
So I waited for patches and updates and give it another go and it still the same.. I'm at a point where I can't even refund it and I hate the fact that it gives an achievement on the start of new game after they implement achievements so now it forever tainted my overall achievements progress % as well...

Stardew Valley is totally not playable without doing a ton of google search. And even with a ton of google search, you still need to make unnecessary mistakes because the game never tells you many important things, like Marnie will visit the doctor on the second last Friday of Fall. So, I ended up unable to buy a pig to get truffle before winter comes.

    • @FenrirInFlowers
      @FenrirInFlowers Рік тому

You don't need the wiki to play Stardew Valley (though we all seem to get into the mindset that we need it when we're playing). You only need it if you are doing things like min/maxing or trying to unlock things on a specific timetable-especially in your first playthrough. Not being able to get a truffle before winter doesn't make you unable to play Stardew Valley, it just means you probably didn't get the greenhouse by your first winter.
I look plenty of things up too when I want to optimize something, but it's because I'm trying to do something specific rather than play the game at a relaxed pace. For example, the game has things like notes and dialogue to tell me about what items the characters love. If I don't want to wait for those to unlock and I look up a marriage candidate's loved items, it's not because I had no choice or that the game wasn't playable. We humans just love to try to optimize stuff.
I'm just about to start a new farm where I make myself actually wait until year 3 to marry a specific character so I can unlock all of his pre-marriage dialogue before marrying him. Maybe I should add a no wiki run after that. 😂

When it came out, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life had lots fair share of haters. It is a very slow game with limited content, when compared to Stardew Valley and the current batch of farming sims. Yes, the dialogue with the townsfolk gets repetitive quickly. Yes, the mining aspect is very limited. Yes, getting new recipes was a frickin' pain in the butt. Yes, it was hard to romance any of the bachelorettes that was not Celia. For me, though, it was great, because it did what a cozy game needed to for me: calm me down after a stressful day at work to the point that I can go to bed. It also had an ending, which at the time, was something that I wanted. I haven't played the SoS remake yet, but it will be interesting to see if it holds up to my nostalgic memories.
I agree with you about a number of other games you mentioned. I kept failing the first big boss fight in Harvestella, and instead of trying to "get gud," I just stopped playing the game. The Roots of Pacha demo didn't grab me. Most of the Story of Seasons games take a while to grow on me, but I also never triggered any of the Doraemon events, likely because they were linked to villagers that I didn't normally talk to.
None of those games, though, could compare to Wild Season, which was billed as a farming sim where the town did not want you around. It was sorta billed as Harvest Moon meets Twin Peaks. It was getting a lot of hype, but the developer was slow in getting the first beta together. During one of those delays, Stardew Valley premiered. As you might guess, the developer gave up on the game, and a lot of Kickstarter backers were not happy. That took the crown for the worst farming sim I wish I had never bought.

I STAND FIRM on my claim that Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the, if not the best, Final Fantasy game, but even I can admit it had SOOoooo many problems despite my praise.
I also love Harvestella, but what you said is soooooo right. SE poured in some decent effort, but played it way too safe.. Maybe which ever team developed it got a bit too scared if they went all out it might have been a flop, so they wanted to play it safe and just give it a run, but I really do think if they had went ALL OUT. The farming, the combat, voice acting, customization, all of it. If they had drowned that damn game in their usual SE BS, I think it could have been a fantastic new IP of theirs... Here is to hoping those who liked the game enough will help them realize they have some gold here if they would just stop fucking around and polish it. Maybe make a Harvestella 2, but its everything you want and expect out of a actual Square Enix title.
