    Over the years I've studied many styles of painting and the one I most want to improve is my own loose painting in oils. This is a perfect scene for beginners and one you should try if you want to loosen up your oil paintings. Next week we'll build on this with a more challenging scene. So don't miss the next video if you also want to learn how to loosen up you're oil paintings

    Hi, Paul! I watched your video three times and took notes! I think learning to paint in a loose style is going to cure me of perfectionism! I am so thankful for your videos! Lately, I have been taking lots of photos of evening skies and grasses and reeds. Your video came at the perfect time to show me how to paint these! Thank you for teaching me to pace myself and paint with some speed, and to not over-analyze everything! It's a revolutionary thought to me to learn to trust my abilities and to learn to live with what I've done. I think these thoughts are going to change my painting experiences in the very best of ways, and I'm even thinking of how they can apply to the rest of my life, as well. Thanks, Paul! Best wishes from Utah!

      Wow, that's a powerful notion, Erica. I've battled against micro management and over analysis for years. At work ( when had a real job 🤣🤣 ) it was all stats, statistics, sales reports and a ton of meetings to set up meetings for a deep dive ... yada yada yada... blah blah blah. I shook off that world and I'm so much happier for it. Yes, technology has crept into my world where I now film my work. But the sheer pleasure of putting paint on a canvas is undiminished. It's as primevel as the first caveman art. I hope you find joy in your paintings and you world too. Paul - 🥰🥰😃😃

    Hi Paul, I really appreciate your tutorial on this method of painting so much, especially for those of us who tend to overthink and spend too much time nitpicking. I love to play with color, with strokes that are flowing and free. Almost as if painting is like a dance, so to speak. This is going to be a lot of fun to paint. Thank you Paul!! Happy painting! Have a wonderful day and week!

      Hello Stephanie - oh I can't tell how much I struggled with over working my paintings. Teaching art was a something of a wake up call. I learned to paint quickly in bite sized chunks. Too slow and the class would over run. Too bigger chunk and some folk got a little lost. But I painted so much better when I didn't have time to fiddle. I hope this weeks painting translates into a good tutorial - but it could be a big mud pie! We'll see - Have a great week too - Paul 😃🥰😎

    As usual, Paul, you’ve provided me with a ton of inspiration! I want to mention too that I have a Meeden sketch box that’s a wee bit bigger than yours. Mrs. Angel is always thinking up ways to make my life better so she picked one out for me. And here’s the thing, I have a full studio that’s plenty big but I prefer to paint on our porch rather than to be cooped up in the studio. This box is the perfect alternative for me. I simply gather my supplies for the project and carry it to the relative comfort of the porch!! Thanks again Paul!!!

      Hello Robin and Mrs Angel - firstly thank you for the kind Super Thanks - always so appreciated. I'm delighted with my art box as the mess of paints and brushes can be a destraction. Having all your kit in one place and organised is part of my process. I find it hard to settle and paint with a pile of dirty dishes in the kitchen even! So being in your happy place with the right mindset is essential. Happy painting and a big hug for Mrs Angel too. - Paul 😃😍😎

      You can do it Cheryl. Just remember - use the biggest brush you can like a 1/2" and a palette knife and thats it. Hide everything else and make this brush do everything. I also worked in 10 min sessions walking away and doing other tasks to stop my mind from over thinking. Its just retraining my mind and eyes. More fun this week to come. A more challenging scene using a loose style again. Have a great week - p.s. lovely to see you all meeting up during the live premier and saying 'hi' to each other. Like a little social 20 mins - wonderful - Paul 😃😍😎

      Hi William - you and me too with painting loose. I start out OK then something happens and I find my style tightening up again. Its the reason why I paint with a little pace and walk away from the painting a lot! I spent an hour on this spread over a day and a half. Doing 10 min spurts then doing emails / stuff / what ever / before doing anothet loose 10 mins. Its just a matter of training one's mind. Lets see where we go with this weeks tutorial - Paul 😃😎

      Thank you Sylvia - yes that 1/2" brush did everything in the end. Using the biggest brush possible and keeping the amount of kit to a minimum reduces the options for fiddling. We'll see how the next one turns out - quite an experiment. I might just have to become the mad professor for this one! 😃🥰😎

    Hiya Paul, another super fantastic painting tutorial and beautiful painting. Man, you sure do make this stuff look easy - (or perhaps I just make it too hard, lol). Thanks so much for doing what you do. Not only are your videos very pleasing and relaxing to watch, but they're also full of great step-by-step tips and tricks which help to make things easier for us beginners, ... _that seem to have some sort of a mental block for the ease of painting, Argh! (😆HaHa)_ Thanks again, Paul - you're the absolute best teacher on all of UA-cam! Have a great week ahead sir and I'll catch ya on the next one. Cheers, 😉🥂 🎨🖼 🎖🏆🎖

      Hi Steve - give this one a go. It's just a 1/2" brush and a little palette knife. Obviously take you time - just not too much time. And have fun! Thats the secret sauce! I'll drop a link to the reference in the description. p.s. thanks for the contimued support through my - Buy Me A Coffee - link. @@PaulRansonArt - _and if it takes a week painting 10 mins a day you'll make it, ..._ Hiya Paul, I'm sure glad that you mentioned that, and I guess this is why I'm off to a slower start than I'd really like to be. I've been reluctant to sit down and attempt an entire painting, because I've kind of been under the impression that once it's started, it must be done and completed within a certain period of time. Which unfortunately for me, isn't one of my bestest of friends. Perhaps you can touch on this subject at some point in a future tutorial video, because nowhere on UA-cam have I found many people offering any real sound advice and/or specific information on the time/s you have to complete a painting once started. So, I've basically been practicing on painting simple trees, bushes, clouds, Etc., Etc., on a paper canvas in my spare time until I can find a few hours to dedicate to one sit-down.

    Hi, Paul! I just commented and then realized I had some questions! So, here they are: (1) Do you know of any substitutions for grease-proof paper? I can't find anything by that name, here. (2) Which red were you using? (3) What was the "other thing" you were doing? I never did guess! 😅 And, (4) When the camera was off, what little details did you add in the foreground? Thank you so much for being my favorite teacher! I am really excited to try painting your beautiful evening sunset at the lake. Have a great day! And best wishes from Utah!

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt  День тому +1

      Hi Erica - I'll do my best - 1) I belive grease-proof paper is called parchment or bakery paper in the US 2) I used Bob Ross Bright red for the highlights. Its an earth toned red so its dull compared to cadmium red but that works just as well. 3) The brush. I used a 1/2" brush for everything. Always use the biggest brush possible for as much as possible. Going too small too soon leads to us artists to get lost in the detail and the over analysis that follows. So keep it big! 4) Just the dabs of red mainly at the base of the reeds. The reference photo has a tangle of red reed stems so I added a few dabs of colour. I hope this covers everything. Have fun and look at your new photos for a suitable candidate for your own fast and loose painting. Also check out the next tutorial - Cornish Coast - now that's a really fun challenge. Happy Painting and love to Utah - Paul 😃😃😎😎

And I never would have thought of it! 😂 I just think that's so funny! Thank you for answering all my questions. I'm so set to go, now! Thanks for all the encouragement you give me and all us aspiring artists. You're a blessing! Have a great day! And, as always, Best wishes from Utah!
