ARMOUR BUILDING - Dollar Store Cosplay

- The quick and easy way to make some BOMB looking armour without breaking the bank!
Dollar store supplies are seriously underrated when it come to cosplay, so I thought I'd show how possible it is to survive with that store alone!
For this video, I challenged myself to only use supplies I could find at the dollar store! Therefore this may not be the BEST way to make armour, but it is certainly one way!

When I try to stop the cracking on paint, I mix my paint with some mod podge and a tiny bit of water.
Good tip...I needed this
Cool, thanks for the tip! ✨
Plaid has recently come out with a flexible acrylic paint that's specifically for cosplay and foam armor. Plaid is the same company that ones Apple Barrel acrylic paints, ModPodge, FolkArt, and some others. And it seems to be very flexible from what I've seen.
Hi! I’ve done a couple of armor builds and I’ve found that the secret to making cheap armor look good is heat sealing it with a hair dryer or heat gun (basically closing all of the pores in the foam til it looks kinda shiny) and then using the ultimate life saver: Plasti dip. It’s a spray primer that’s almost like plastic. It’s super cheap and keeps all the paint from soaking into the foam and makes the piece looks ssssssuper smooth. Using these tips will help armor looks really professional for cheap!
thanks for sharing!
Ive never looked into buying a heat gun before, are there any ones you recommend?
Aradiiah I would recommend going to the hardware store and investing in a good one! It’ll last you a loooong time!
Where did you find cheap Plastidip?
@@shanimil walmart. Amazon has cases that are a bit cheaper if you need 6.
Try Walmart budget^^
Apple barrel paint- .50 cents, a little goes a long way, trust me
Poster boards- $1.77 for a big broad, that can be used for the details, and your Matt can be used for the stuff going around your body! It’s very useful! You can get some good deals at Walmart!
that's definitely another great spot to check out! They certainly have more options than the dollar store :p
I see that slytherin shirt you are wearing and it is adorable!!!!!! I want it CD
I want a hufflepuff version lol
I want a ravenclaw!
I want Slytherin too UwU
Fellow pan?
I want a Gryffindor version.
Here's a tip, you can always mix your acrylics with PVA glue, since PVA glue is soft it won't crack.
Moon Moon oooo this is a good tip
Yeah Iike to mix my cheap dollar store paints with modge podge I already had to make them less scratchy and smoother/shiny (not specifically for cosplay, but I really like the texture of it)
To prevent cracking you can get some fabric medium (aka textile medium) it’s like 15 dollars at Micheal’s (it’s not exactly cheap) but I’ve gotten a TON of use out of mine and I’m not even half way through my bottle. Worth it.
I got a little bottle of it at walmart for about 2 dollars tax.
Hi I'm starting cosplay soon so this was really helpful and I'm making most of my stuff but I will buy the wigs and stuff of Amazon or from a shop like Tesco or something like that.
They sell wigs at five below for 5 dollars during halloween season
@@alii9868 Halloween wigs are shedding really much, you can't really style them, and they also don't really look good.
@@Dyingsewerrat 👁️👄👁️ my kirishima wig was a long one dollar red wig( I cut and styled it) from the dollar store in Halloween season and it's lasted me one year and it doesn't shed
Wow I never thought of using a mat
Oooh, very cool stuff! Makes me wanna cosplay. Thanks for the tips!!
Oo i also recommend buying sheets of eva foam from hobby lobby. They're called silly winks and are 80 cents per sheet. 10 would cost about ten dollars but thats how i make the bases for my eyepatches, i used them for gauntlets and they're good for layering too! Hot glue is also a handy dandy helper!
I never knew you liked mha but now I know 😂
I've found that painting a couple layers of modge podge on the loan before painting and after it's dried helps keep it from cracking! And it's only about $6 for a jar! Mines lasted me like a year and it's not even empty yet!!
you can also make some mod podge with white glue and water
I also recommend mixing a bit of mod podgy with paint
Legit may use this for making cheap Paladin armor haha
YAS that would look so good!
Might use this for making my Gauntlets
Kyra robinson I’m doing kokichi ;w;
@@bodyndblood Nice to see fellow danganronpa fans...
Kyoko Kirigiri U-U
Katsuki Bakugou nice
Hello katsuki I'm going to get soba later would u like to join
I started for my friend, I never really have watched anime, but I feel like I’m missing a super cool community so I wanted to get started, Thanks❤️
It is a pretty great community :p we definitely know how to have a good time while embracing our weird
I recommend apple barrel paints! Theyre usually 50 cents at walmart! Just dries pretty a little too fast. It doesn't crack, at least for me.
Whoa! That’s pretty awesome! I love Uraraka
Hello this was really helpful because I’m going as Bakugo from bnha :3
This so helpful !!! As a mha lover, and bakugou cosplayer, i get myself a little trouble when it comes to making his complex costume, but this helped me with ideas on how to create it on a budget!! Love u!!!😘
For the floor mats, you could use foamies or craft foam instead, which at joanns is about $1 us for a decent sized sheet. To keep shape use a heatgun or hair dryer. This is what I do and it works decently well!
Very convenient that the budget cosplay is of a character who is also very tight on money👍
Very good tips, always helpful to have some guides on saving money with cosplay, it can get pretty expensive
Thank you so much I’m gonna start on my K1B0 cosplay soon wish me luck :)
Good luck!!
Omg, that will be awesome
me, wanting to cosplay female iida in the future: THIS IS IS GONNA COME IN HANDY LATER.
Oh my god it’s been a whole year since I started watching mha but it took me until today to learn that his name’s iida not Lida
I have a good job and can afford expensive foam and Worbla, but I always buy that exact dollar store foam for my armour builds! I just used 11 sheets to build my Captain Rex armour! A tip is to get the grey stuff so if you are tracing templates you can see the pen markings easier.
This is what I've been looking for! Im heading to the dollar store right now! XD
when painting stuff like this I recommend also doing a layer or more of varnish to seal in the paint better. I paint on a lot of different things and let me tell you varnish is amazing when you want to seal in paint so it doesn’t get ruined when for example you need to clean the thing you painted put don’t want to ruin your hours worth of hard work. You can get a bottle at any craft store and some hardware stores depending on what type of varnish you want for example spray varnish or liquid varnish you can paint on. The price does range depending on where you go. I hope this advice is helpful and have a great day/night. 😊
Omg this just solved my problem with the mouth piece for Toga!!!! I was gonna waste money and buy one, but this video made me realize that I can do the exact same thing but for Toga’s mouth armor!!! Thanks so much!!!
ah im so glad!!!! saving money is the best
This is a new way ive seen body armour being made i normally make body armour out of paper machè so i loved this video alot
The harry Potter shirt😍😍😍fellow slytherin here!
Quarantine will be the reason I'll push my cosplay from now till my 11th bday
I was looking for ways to make a armor for cosplay and I came across this video not knowing this is exactly what I needed!!! (I’m trying to do aoyama’s belt and this was perfect!!!) all I need to do is to make it look like his!!! Tysm
OMFG UR SLYTHERIN T-SHIRT GIVES ME LIIIIIIFEEEE
To help the paint to be more flexible, mix modge podge with it^^
You can purchase big bottles from Walmart (gloss, semi-gloss, and matte) for ~$7-$8 or smaller bottles from dollar tree, for, well, $1 😂
Hi there! I just wanted to say I found this video super helpful and as a broke teen it also motivates me cause I was super intimidated by the costs and time taken into account. Thanks for being awesome and making a video that inspires!
I like to plan my cosplays way before I start making them so I can start buying some stuff month prior and don't have to spend all the money at once. I can also use some more pricy materials that way because I just buy one thing at a time ( we're not talking worbla that stuffs way to expencive but I can prime my armor pieces with plasti dip for example or I can buy things I'll need for future cosplays as well. For example I just bought a dremil for foam armor making. Costs 20 bugs but will last me for years to come.)
I think it’s fantastic what you made 😊
me who made toga’s teeth scarf out of fabric and poster board plus paint: *yes. highly recommended to go to dollar store*
The dollar store is actually pretty useful, you can get a lot of stuff there, it's bad, but not horrible. The nail polish there works, so dose the makeup if you need it for just one cosplay, there's hair products, I find a lot of useful stuff there, especially if your looking for DIY stuff.
Love you're hair, I'm a slytherien x-x and my best friend is a hufflepuff also subscribed
IVE BEEN LOOKING EVERYWHERE FOR THOSE MATS - I NEED TO MAKE MY RED RIOT COSPLAY AHHH
this helps so much! thank you!💚💚
im so glad i could help!
You're so good at it!
Thanks for the tips:D
I am a beginner and I don’t know what to do
Hello! So this is the first video i have watched by you. I think this video was really great and keep up the great work!
I'm a Slytherin too. Wish you the best on any cons or quidditch games you might attend.
------>Broke cosplay tip!
I love this.... It's really easy and very cheapest...😘😘😃😃👍🏻👍🏻
I love the voltron lion btw
Outstanding cosplay video! Definitely gives us more creative ideas to produce innovative content for our channel! We are definitely wanting to team up with other channels as well.
I used this tutorial for the mask of barrel from nightmare before Christmas and it worked really well thank you
you can use modpodge or a mix of saline solution, Vaseline and vinegar to stop the paint from cracking
Thank you, I will try using this for Todoroki’s belt😊💕
thank you!!! this was super helpful!!
if you use the mats i recommend getting some white spray paint and spraying it before udon g the paint!
So helpful
That's pretty cool
So one thing I've been doing is, for a fur like design I'll get construction paper and layer it like roofing tile and cut it however I need. Nice and cheap for a not half bad look
Thank you! I'm interested in attending Megacon this year and I most of the cosplays I find for the character I wanna go as don't look very good, so hand making it is my best option~
I love your shirt!
Im a Ravenclaw!
Thank you. You help me so much
0:32 first ochaco and now kirishima
Quick tip - If you want paint walmart sells it cheaper and its better paint. Its acrylic paint too and its a bit smaller but they are like 87-99 cents ( at least at my walmart )
Also a uni student who has to spend money lol
Gonna consider something like this when I make the arm/leg bracers, possibly even the "hair" cones and back blades (the blades I could do something like poster board though?? as long as it don't be all wobbly), for Magicaloid 44 ^^
And no, I'm not ready for working with EVA/worbla foam, this is actually my first time making any kind of cosplay armor;;
If y’all have a hero name for my Oc reply to my comment:
Real name: Imogen Ayala
Quirk: Info
In depth version of quirk:
She can know the name and basic information of someone at first glance
(Great for masked villains)
Setback: If she uses her quirk too much she loses parts of her memory so with a bunch of villains she can’t use her ability too much and has to rely on her skills from going to U.A
your oc sounds so cool! i love the unique name and quirk, i’m not too sure on hero names but try to incorporate things about the quirk or appearance into the name! good luck :)
My Hero Academia Hero Codename Status.
Name: Javier "Javi" Barrales.
Quirk: Gravity.
Depth of Quirk: I can float, touch objects to use floating rubble as projectiles, remove weight of heavy structures, hold projectiles as weapons. And use my gravity quirk to remove my weight to increase my speed, and make floating objects as decoys.
Setbacks: Using my gravity quirk too much. Can make me dizzy, exhausted, sleepy, and tired. To heal my condition. I need a cup of caffeine, exercise by walking, or have naptime. In order for me, to recover from my dizziness, and queasy side effects of the gravity. It doesn't damage the person's body. It is just exhaustion only. After recovery, I feel full of energy, and being healthy again.
And finally, last but not least.
Hero Name: Gravity Lad.
That will be My Hero Academia Hero Status.
If I choose one quirk from My Hero Academia. I choose to obtain, the gravity quirk. Like Ochako did. I would like obtain an outfit like Ochako too. Gravity quirk has a downside. It can make you dizzy, exhausted. Thankfully, it doesn't damage the person's body. Just becomes dizzy and tired. To recover, I need to require some caffeine, exercise walking, or have a few minutes of naptime. To recover from the side effects of gravity quirk and be healthy after these three tips I mentioned. The gravity quirk from Ochako, would be a good fit for me.
Ochako Uraraka is my absolute favorite character in My Hero Academia. Because. I am not aggressive. I am confident, focused, ready, shy, timid, creative, imaginative, dreamy, geeky, happy, and sympathetic. I would have the gravity quirk like Ochako. Since I prefer sympathetic peace rather than fighting.
whoa! I will definitely use this method for my teen titans cyborg build. Thanks!
quick tip: use a blow dryer to dry coats of paint because waiting is quiznacking time consuming
This makes me want to try cosplay! It looks fun! 😂😂😂
it was very helpfull but unfortunately in the netherlands (where i live) we don’t have dollar store😢 we don’t even use dollars we use Euro’s😅
lol that might make things a little difficult
Vega.Cosplay and that is not all my problems i have some more problems
1. i don’t have any money
2. i’m the only cosplayer in town and my town is very very small
3. there aren’t any cosplay stores with wigs i only found one but i need to go there with a car and i’m 13 so i need to bring my mother with me
4. i have my parents and it is a little bit awkward when my mom or dad comes in my room when i’m cosplaying
5. i have no wigs i need to so everything with my own long brown hair
6. i have got school and like i said i’m the only cosplayer (i know one other cosplayer and that is my best friend but we don’t live in the same town) so i need to be careful with my cosplays or else i will get bullied
and that are all my problems that i have at this moment
Love you vega
You are so pretty! Im so jealous!💖
There are already very good tips in the comments but what you also might need is some varnish. It might come out a bit shiny, but that can be fixed by adding some matte polish or varnish if you dont want it to be shiny. Im pretty sure its not that expensive, but i dont exactly know so youre gonna have to check. I hope this helps!
btw i really love your hair!!!!
Definitely more “on a budget” stuff!
