Love the honesty! The easiest way to know if you need ND filters is super simple. If you use auto mode 100% of the time you don't need ND filters. If you use Manual on the pocket you will need ND filters to get optimal results.
Great breakdown. I've had the Pocket 3 for about a month now, and I absolutely love this camera. As you mentioned, the convenience of being able to point and shoot vs the setup with the a7siii was how it's supposed to be for vlogs. I was only able to get the base camera (not the creator combo) before my flight back to Vietnam, and I was worried about not having the ND filters with all of the outdoor filming that I'm doing for the channel. The moral of the story, everything looked crisp and I'm happy with the footage. For the untrained eye, watching UA-cam videos on their phone, it's not a big deal... (BTW what mic are you using for your A-roll here?)
Getting P3 next week. I looked at the black mist filters and found the K&F filter. According to their description it wll let the lens close without hitting the gimbal. I will find out next week. As far as ND filters I fell into that rtrap on the Action 1, action 2 and the pocket 2 and never use them. Wasted a ton of money on them. The most I may do on this one is buy the VND's but that will be it.
You won't get the proper effectiveness of a filter unless you use manual settings. This mostly involves shutter speed. 1/50 SS for 24 FPS, 1/60 for 30 FPS, 1/120 for 60 FPS, 1/240 for 120 FPS.
I’m with you on this. I have ND filters for my Sony cameras, but the point of the Pocket 3 for me is convenience. Turn it on and start shooting. I bought the K&F var ND filters and the are so hard to see the writing on them and the little tick mark. It makes it hard to set. I’ll probably hardly ever use the filters.
I have Skyreat filters set of ND8, 16, 32, 64. They are also CPL. The sky looks great with CPL on. Tried all of them ended up with ND 16 on Pocket 3 during Christmas trip in Disneyland. Why ND16? Because it's just enough for outside to not make shutter speed way too high and I didn't take it off when walked in coffee shop. This filter along with ISO 3200 max worked just fine. The background separation is more pronounced, clouds on the sky are not washed out. The things I didn't like are in my opinion it decreased details and CPL ring is hard to turn without interaction with gimbal, which will shut down when you apply some force during filter Ring rotation. Filter is thin, hard to take off camera, dropped it couple of times. It didn't break though. I'm going to return it and try something better. Did you try Freewell filters?
I’ve got the same filters and if you put them on back to front magnet side facing out they get stuck. When on right way the gimbal detects filter and moves to second parking position so it can be placed in camera case with lens facing downwards.
I got the skyreat nd/cpl filters. Not because I need the nd so much, but the cpl is very important when recording cars. They can completely change how the car appears, not just window reflections, but how light reflects off paint. I also like their use when shooting glassy water. I'm sure you probably know what I'm talking about.
Definitely! I didn’t pick one of those up for the P3 as I don’t have an application for it in my work right now, but certainly a great buy if you need it!
Would be interested in how much one gains on dynamic range with CPL. Technically I assume that you don't get it correct when you talk about stops. The sky is much more blue and most of the reflections go away, there is just less area in the image where you could get in trouble by burning out the highlights.
@@tidatida4145 I'm not sure how much you gain in DR. I believe the ND helps in reduction of light and can increase the natural motion blur appearance. The Polarizer is mostly used for how the reflections look on the car, it can really changed the appearance overall. There is little worry about the sky or how distant objects appear (they usually aren't changed dramatically or blown out to unusable levels) The biggest lesson I've learned with the OP3 isn't related to the CPL or ND. Always be sure to lock the AWB. The OP3 makes dramatic color changes when the AWB isnt locked. Everything else functions like any camera would, but the auto white balance is a bit extreme in it's changes.
Unless you desire having motion blur, I wouldn't say that ND filters are necessary. A mist filter could add a fun blooming effect if you'd like to give your footage a little pizazz. A CPL would be useful if you deal with a lot of reflections and water. Personally, I'd only get a mist filter for what I use the P3 for.
I always have a filter on the Pocket 3 because I also use it as a lens protector. Using a bit thicker filter also makes the Pocket 3 turn the lens to the display side when turning off, which is fine by me since that side is always covered by the case. I do agree that the Mist filter is a bit strong in most situations, and would be nice if the wide angle lens would be magnetized as well.
Good idea on using it as protection. I never used to use anything like a UV filter on a lens because I didn't want it to take away from the sharpness. That was until I dropped a lens...now I'm all about that protected life!
Hello, thanks to share this interesting video. Out of curiosity: if you have to shoot on the beach close to sea with Pocket 3. If you shoot in 4K 50p and Automatic Exposure, what filter would you use? Would you use a CPL filter? I'd like to listen all of you.
@@ExploringWorldUA-cam the ND filters will help you more in the event you shoot in manual exposure. They give you the ability to lower the shutter speed for the motion blur effect. So in your case, I think you’ll be best with a CPL 👍🏼
@@danvirchow Thanks for your precious news. If you were me, would you buy a a CPL or ND/PL ? I repeat, I shoot in 4K 50p in a city near the beach and on the beach with sun. Thanks again.
Fewer reflections on glass more transparency, water, car etc. surfaces. Blue sky, less mist and you can choose the intensity by screwing - CPL is a no-brainer. I'm a big fan of polarized sunglasses, the world looks just nicer and eases the eyes. Automatically you gain more dynamic range.
I have the same black mist and turned the camera off. It also got stuck and now there is a rattle when turned off. I got on chat with DJI and they said the rattle is fine 100% normal. Do you hear the rattle when turned off?
If it helps, I can hear a slight rattle on mine, and I haven't attached any filters at all yet. It's probably just one of the internal gimbal elements moving a bit while powered off.
GREAT video! Have been struggling with the Freewell filter set getting stuck on shut down. Found that the IZEAFH filter set on Amazon gets GREAT reviews and do NOT get stuck when shutting down the camera. Only problem being is they are thinner to elevate not getting stuck, but they are a little of a struggle to handle but DO have a finger nail notch on the top and bottom to help. Will probably get some. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for checking the video out! Man, it can be tricky getting these little filters off of the camera. I haven't used any ND's on the P3 since making this!
Great video about what not to buy! I have been watching a ton of videos about this camera and it's all this settings you should have (framerate, shutter speed, iso etc.). Besides that you have to select gimble mode. When you have done all the settings correct you have missed the object you where supposed to shoot.

Great review and thanks! Spot on with what I found. NDs are great but for my use case scenarios, not worth stopping & dealing with the hassle. And I love the Black mist filter. That's totally worth getting.

But if it is not too expensive, I will still like to have them “just” in case situation 😂. Thanks for the great info and sharing the honest opinion. Have a great day.
Thank you for watching! I too always have some with me just in case. It all depends on what you're looking to capture, but for daily video that isn't going to be used for paid work or anything, no filter is the way to go!
I come from Vietnam. Thank you very much for your very practical and useful information about ND filter for Pocket 3. Hope the channel grows more and more
The ND filters are the normal focal length, so they don't make the image wider. Also, the ND filters I have don't magnetize to the wide angle filter. Hope that helps!
I agree, most people wandering around with this thing won't need any filters. But honestly, the footage out of this 1-inch sensor is VERY solid. I wouldn't have any qualms using this briefly as a B-cam during paid work (like attaching it to the rear of a car for some neat rig-style shots). Def a requirement for me, but everyone's mileage will vary!
I needed this nd filter review! I bout the Pocket 3 for convenience from my Sony cameras. And it’s good to know I won’t be buying gear that will just collect dust. Thank you for that!
As much as you don't need them, sometimes you do! In the event that you're using the P3 as a b-roll camera in some paid work, I would definitely have some form of ND around. But for 99% of general use, totally unnecessary!
Yeah I bought a huge pack of filters and it’s such a burden while I’m shooting outdoor to indoors But if shooting b rolls it’s more of a fun for me, something to play with From a Beginner of video and photography world
I bought ND filters for my Action 3... and they're still in the box 😆 I may pick up that Black Mist filter for my Pocket 3, but like you said it adds a level of complexity that makes you less likely to just USE the camera. As much as I like it it's finicky enough to precisely slide it back into the case so the gimbal head doesn't get jostled. My iPhone still wins as far as quick, one-handed operation with no snagging, cases or smudge-magnet little filters. You basically need three hands to handle the camera, filter and case at the same time.
I have a whole stack of filters I was so excited to use then just never did 😅 That black mist is worth checking out. There are many cool applications for that one.
I use a wheelchair so this is actually my main camera along side the iPhone 15 Pro. I dont want to carry mirrorless with huge gimbals as is not practical for me but I like my footage to look cinematic so I use NDs and Lenses because after color grading will get much better. I didnt use them all the time tho but its much easier to set them on this pocket camera than to a mirrorless, calibrating a gimbal, will take me like 15min and sometimes just to shoot 2/3 minutes. Great video tho!
My brother was in a wheelchair and would have loved using a a camera like this. The NDs certainly make the footage look better if you’re hoping to optimize your video. Thanks for checking out the video, appreciate you!
i totally agree with you, an average person can't even tell with or w/o ND filter. also you won't be using the P3 for paid shoots for sure so an ND is not necessary for personal content creation use
Thanks for helping me decide on my dilemma.. Really wanna be very minimalist. That's why I bought this pocket 3.. So, no ND no problem. Black mist is in the shopping cart now.. 😅
wow... exactly my mindset. the complexity, the decision process... and while i understand the motion blur aspect, well maybe I am so used to Action cam video on YT... but i dont really care about the blur. I think people put way too much into trying to figure out filters, and DLOG and LUTS... and then mess up the shot that they wouldve gotten if they just used auto and no filters
Love the video, I use ND filters on my Pocket 3 and it closes fine :) but I agree it probably won't be used much, until I need them when on holiday in super bright places.
I love the look you have on your pocket videos. What are your settings? Do you adjust the sharpness & noise? It’s super nice & film look! Can you make one on D Log Vs non D log? Would love to see your results since you get the film look. Thank you for this great detailed video.
Thanks for checking out the video! Sharpness is lowered just a bit and that’s about it! I use Gamut base luts and that was the only color change on the D-Log footage in this video. Here’s a link to the luts if you wanna check ‘em out: gamut.io/product/dji-conversion-luts/
id say, you dont need them if you cant be bothered to or if it becomes an incovenience. each has their own use case and id say this is a more personal take :)

Yeah I bought a huge pack of filters and it’s such a burden while I’m shooting outdoor to indoors
But if shooting b rolls it’s more of a fun for me, something to play with
From a Beginner of video and photography world
Yeah, if you can work around the inconveniences, filters are the way to go!
Keep telling yourself that 😐
I've used the P3 for a paid shoot...check out my latest video!
Thanks for helping me decide on my dilemma.. Really wanna be very minimalist. That's why I bought this pocket 3.. So, no ND no problem. Black mist is in the shopping cart now.. 😅
No filter, no problem! For basic everyday use and just capturing your life, no ND is the way to go 👍🏼
wow... exactly my mindset. the complexity, the decision process... and while i understand the motion blur aspect, well maybe I am so used to Action cam video on YT... but i dont really care about the blur. I think people put way too much into trying to figure out filters, and DLOG and LUTS... and then mess up the shot that they wouldve gotten if they just used auto and no filters
You said it...just getting "the shot" is the most important thing!
You are very honest in your opinion and I like it. Thanks.
Appreciate that, thank you!
Love the video, I use ND filters on my Pocket 3 and it closes fine :) but I agree it probably won't be used much, until I need them when on holiday in super bright places.
you have an excellent presentation style and a soothing voice for vlogging. well done son :-)
Thank you! New videos coming soon.
Loved the real world experience. Great video brotha!!
Thanks man! Hope it helped in some way!
Summerlin?
Right around that area!
id say, you dont need them if you cant be bothered to or if it becomes an incovenience. each has their own use case and id say this is a more personal take :)
Great content, Dan! Really like how you broke everything down. Insightful stuff! 🔥
Thanks for checking it out! 🙏🏼
I cannot get them off!
Uh oh...stuck from turning off the camera?
@@danvirchow - with the pocket 3 on, it feels like I’m going to break the head off the gimbal as I try to get a fingernail under the magnetic filter. They are really on there and I have big, fat fingers.
@@boycefitzgerald gotta admit I also felt uncomfortable trying to take them on and off while the P3 was on. Feels like you’re fighting the motors of the unit 😬
@@danvirchow - appreciate you. I’ll practice and try not to break it.
Thanks for sharing this, great advice, too! Of course I'm gonna buy them, just freaked out now about them getting stuck, haha.
Making this video was the only time that happened to me, so I wouldn't be too worried about it...but apparently it's something that definitely can happen!
Thank you @@danvirchow! I immediately cancelled the order and reordered with Neewer ND filters recommended in your comments here. 🤣👍
Of course I realized that the Newer will be probably impossible to remove due its design, so I might be carrying a little plastic spudger 🤣
The honest review I'm looking for.
Hope it helped!
Great honest review. Thanks bro
Thanks for checking it out!
Great review. Thanks! Subscribed.
Thank you, appreciate it!
I'm seconding americansafarico, a gear review that didn't encourage me to buy something...unheard of lol. Great video bro. Got my sub.
Just keeping it real! Thanks for checking it out and the sub 🙏
Yes. I will notice. But I do not think it matters when you walk around shooting videos of your kids.
Exactly!
Audio is a bit strange and distant. Like you're not sitting in front of us. Lipsync is a bit off too.
Excellent video otherwise, very informative
Yeah, didn’t nail the audio on the is one. always looking to improve! Thanks for checking out the video 🙏🏼
This is what i needed to hear. Only youtuber that stated that. I was in two minds whether to buy them.. but tbh i really dont need them. Im just a a pick up and shoot a video guy. I aint tryna make a movie lol
@@SkippaG exactly! This camera is incredibly capable of capturing pro video with filters, but they are unnecessary for 99% of this cameras generally use. Thanks for checking out the video!
Maybe because I wear glasses I absolutely hate the mist look. It makes my eyes hurt and think the camera is blurry
The mist filter I have is a little strong, so I totally see where you’re coming from! I prefer less bloom.
Made a great point. Awesome.
Hope it helped! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Watching this video makes me realize I should probably get used to the camera WITHOUT any filters first so that I actually know how to film first
You’ll probably realize you don’t need the filters in the process!
If you are a pro and you use 180 degree shutter rule, and probably make some rollers then you def need them :(
Of course you need them. And it looks like this is clickbait anyhow. Yea you can’t set the camera to 1/60th frame rate and iso 100 in daylight if you want proper images.
Well, that's the point I was making within the video. If you want motion blur, yes, you need them. However, a majority of people who are just looking for a high quality camera to capture their life will not need them, nor will they care that they don't have them. All a matter of use case!
Dude let some of that room tone back in on your mic and bring back the compression. Your dialog is so dry sounding and compressed that it will make viewers focus on the wrong thing because it almost feels overdubbed instead of a real human talking to them. Also thanks for the video, I was wondering about these filters.
Appreciate the feedback! I'll definitely work on better audio in the next video. Thanks for checking this one out!
@@danvirchow Thanks, I didn't mean to come across harsh at all. I'm an audio geek and record and mix dialog for TV and broadcast so I get a little picky 🤣
@@christurbiville ha, understood and appreciated! Dropped another video today and hope the audio is sounding better!
@@danvirchowHey man,Great video! First things first. I saw the title of your video and drew my attention right away because I recently but the Osmo Pocket 3, and I’ve been contemplating getting the Freewell super big pack… I forgot how it’s called. Part 2 of the first things first… I was like daaaamn he has a Papa Emeritus III picture, ok I’m staying this dude is cool! I’m a huge Ghost fan myself. Regarding the comment about the sound… Maaaan… I’ve seen so many videos and people with millions of views that haven’t even invested on a $25 microphone for their phone. I did notice myself some strong “ssss” sounds and boomy low end which only you know what your settings are, buuuut are they determining factors to deter someone to watching your content considering it’s still properly recorded? No I don’t think so. I just think it’s an area of opportunity. Also regarding how for some reason the ND filter got stuck when you turned off the camera. I recall seeing some other videos where the Osmo pocket is supposed to sense the filter and not hide the lens so that you can take it off and not put any stress on the motors. I wonder if it could be something with this specific brand. Anyways cheers man!
Black mist filter looks awful and blurry 😅😅
These were pretty extreme examples just to showcase the effect. It would look great in a more subtle environment!
your audio is too low
Oh dear 🤯
10bit has destroyed the need for ND filters
There is still a need for filters if you look to achieve motion blur in bright outdoor scenarios.
Some nd filter brands will close and open normally...people that do not know how to use them should not buy them..
To me, no filter video image looks much much better.
Probably a little sharper!
your audio voice is leveled weird.
Always working to improve my audio. Will keep on it! Thanks for checking out the video.
don't drink and vlog.
