    The first official Dead Eye Match is in the bag, being embedded in CQB Brutality 2024 run at the SUPS range in St. George, UT. This is the first of what will be many "versus" Dead Eye videos in which we discuss and analyze Dead Eye as a match concept, but also our own performance and firearms as well.

    The point of the stratagem arrow-key inputs (and the mission objective terminals that use them) is to force you to stop and think about what you're inputting when you're trying to go fast, so Karl's experience was 100% authentic.

    That does indeed look like a ton of fun. I love how he ran out of rounds for the revolver, went to reload but went waight, that rifle has ammo. Very organic moment.
    I have a .357 lever gun that is a bit picky about .38 ammo. It is not picky about .357 though. Must have something to do with the case length and lifter. That being a short gun, I only gain one round when going to .38 so I just run .357 in it all the time anyway.

  • @WhatIfBrigade

    Russell getting two targets with the shotgun was awesome! Perhaps he can conserve ammo that way.

  • @TUCOtheratt
    @TUCOtheratt 2 місяці тому +5

    I am interested in the Brutality concept because I have always liked USPSA courses of fire and rules but cowboy guns. Cowboy Action has evolved to what it is for important reasons. What is your unloading procedure? The time and technical on that is much of the reason for CBA stage design. Can you finish with rounds in the guns? The only thing I didn't like about this stage was the card at the end designating target order. Other than classifiers USPSA stages don't have target order which is much more fun imo.

    • @TommyVee63
      @TommyVee63 2 місяці тому +4

      While it might not be everyone's cup of tea, in fact the designated target order in the final step of this stage did add an extra dimension of "slow down and think about what you're doing" to that stage that made it fun to shoot. It might not be what you think is the most fun, but you should really try coming to one of these, the stage designs are innovative and very dynamic, and watching some of the folks shoot it in Dead Eye division was cool.

    • @KurtAustin2448
      @KurtAustin2448 2 місяці тому +4

      I shot this match in deadeye via borrowing one of Karl's guns. Yes you can finish a stage with rounds still in the firearm, you just unload them in front of the RO before you can leave the bay, in whatever manner is appropriate for the firearm (break it open, just cycle them out, punch them out the loading gate, etc.). If you abandoned a firearm earlier in the stage, either someone else cleared it if there was a chance, or you just left it hammer down on a fired cartridge as with all guns you could bring to deadeye, that will always be a safe condition.
      IMO, the card at the end was the best part of this stage because it adds a mental component and given the randomized nature, you're going into that stage element effectively blind. Sure you know what you have to do in the general sense, but your specific target engagement is something you don't find out until you're in the stage.

    • @Birdpatch
      @Birdpatch 2 місяці тому +3

      You should definitely try to get out to one! And hope you check out the next stage vids.
      The defined shooting order with the cards is an occasional thing - sometimes not knowing engagement order at the start is an extra point of mental challenge after exertion. Even with that, Deadeye still has the perk of being able to stage all your firearms where you'd like and that adds a lot of possibility.
      I'm really excited to see what people bring to deadeye. I think you'd have enormous fun, hope you're able to make it happen some time.

    • @InrangeTv
      @InrangeTv  2 місяці тому +7

      Guns can be abandoned pretty much anywhere safely, and that's somewhat defined by the stage itself. When it comes to cowboy guns, we consider them safe if they stay closed on a fired round. Guns can be abandoned with rounds in them, just not with a live round in the chamber. Guns are unloaded with the RO at the end of the stage while pointed safely at a berm. As for target order, we are a predominantly steel oriented environment and target order is sometimes one of the challenges of the stage. Sometimes the amounts of hits on each target vary, etc...I'll be putting out one of these "versus" videos from Dead Eye each Saturday for the next...uhm, seven weeks or so, so it'll be more clear as more is released. ;p

    • @TUCOtheratt
      @TUCOtheratt 2 місяці тому +1

      @@InrangeTv Thanks for the response. Looking forward to the new released videos. So with the stage finish and unloading procedure you described, if the shooter finishes with rounds in the gun he unloads on the spot with the RO (as opposed to going to the unloading table like in CBA) then they both retreat and repeat with any abandoned guns I would assume. I have no problem with that but I do think it will take a lot of time to process each shooter. Not a big deal but can make for a long day if the squad is over 5 people or so?

    Watching this made me think of my revolver training in Norman Oklahoma in the '70s. One of our guest instructors was a highway patrol officer named Dan Combs who was well known for his pistol skills. He stated we should get into the habit of counting our rounds so we will know if and when we need to reload. But we should not fall into the Hollywood trap of counting our opponent's rounds, even if we know what they are using.
    To demonstrate why, he used a single-action Colt revolver to fire ten rapid shots. He did this by firing it lefthanded. He left the loading gate open and reloaded it with his right hand as the cylinder rotated. This was possible because he had polished the chambers and the spent cases would fall out as he tilted the barrel up while cocking the hammer. What was really surprising was how fast and accurate he was.
    What I took away from this was:
    It's not what you or your opponent carries that's important. It is how good you or they are with what you or they carry.
    If you are going to assume anything, always assume they are good with what they have, and always train to be better.
