The problem is they just dont make bikes like this anymore a V4 is all you need 1300cc!!! Its a fantastic power unit for cruiser all this 1600-2ltr is bullshit the industry has lost its mind they are getting bigger and bigger when they should be 750s w turbos or flat 4 cylinder 800-1200

Just a few points of correction: the 1100s swing arm is NOT made of dog shite, it’s actually a very sturdy, very thick, very heavy piece of iron. The problem is the bad design of the rear mudguard which inexplicably ends 6 inch’s above the front of the swing arm. This has a habit of throwing water, and salt water in winter, thrown up by the rest tire, onto the swing arm. It gets inside the spaces created by the strengthening gussets and rots it away. The solution is to make your own mudguard extension to close this gap and direct this water back to the road. Also, refinish the swingarm, rust proof it and seal the gaps in the gussets with a flexible compound. This problem also rots the bottom of the fuel tank and destroys the air cooled alternator. I’ve had 2 1100s and done this upgrade to both. They both lost their alternators before I could prevent damage. I also own a 1300 and it’s my go to bike. Love the adjustable screen and fuel injection.
Let's be honest, ALL Honda's are extremely reliable to the point of being bulletproof and extremely easy to ride. You might say they lack 'character'. But if all you want is to get on your bike and ride, without a worry in the world, you get a Honda. And with the Pans, they made the mistake of making them too perfect, just as you said. They may not have all the latest German gizmo's, or the Italian 'character', but they make up for it in reliability and ease of use.
I have a 37 Year old Goldwing 1200...still runs like a new Bike...why change it? Did my Apprenticeship a long time ago with Hondas.....I knew how good they were way back in the Sixties.
I am a retired police officer and I bought my 2000 ST100AY in 2006 - I still have it, and it has just had new cam belt, tensioner etc during a major overhaul. You're right that ST owners look after their machines. Mine has 54000 miles on it and people tell me it's not run in properly yet 🤔
Picked one up this weekend, gunmetal grey 08 abs model with 105000km on the clock and it's My second ST . I've regretted selling my 04 model years ago. One of the most capable underestimated bikes out there. Loving having one back in the shed.
Im looking at used ones and most I see are around 90k. Some at 180. These are fricking war machines. Solid bikes, just gets low mpg is the only real con imho.
Nice to see someone stomping around the Wirral. Grew up there myself. I’m thinking about getting a Pan as a winter hack for pootling to work. These videos really helped. Thanks mate.
I enjoyed your video, great commentary! I'm 50 so it's not an old man bike, just a smart man's bike! I just picked up a 2012 ST1300 (in the USA they aren't called the Pan) with 5,500 miles on it in mint condition for 8 grand U.S. What a fantastic motorcycle! The last owner made a big mistake by not putting more miles on this awesome machine, but it's a big win for me!!
Excellent review of what is almost a perfect bike. I’m almost 66 and had the ST1100 for years and it was a superb bike but the ST1300 is a better bike with a fantastic motor and a better chassis without all the old idiosyncrasies of the older bike. My 2004 ST1300 cost me £4000 six years ago and your right it is hard to change to a better bike because it’s hard to find a modern bike that does the job better. Anyhow we’ll said and an excellent little video.
If you haven't tried all of the seat adjustment settings give them a try. It feels like a totall different bike just by moving the seat a little. A couple of complaints that won't affect you in the UK. When it is really hot out (90F and higher), the ST1300 is brutally hot to ride. I had a "summer" windscreen that I had cut down very short to use in the summer. Also, where there are high side winds, the ST1300 has so much plastic body work that it can be hard to handle. I'm from the Midwest in the US, and have ridden the ST1300 in 50mph gusty side winds and it is not fun. Cheers!
Yeah I’ve got the seat in the highest setting , seems best for me , you’re right about the wind hitting the bike as I’ve had a few “ moments “ with that . As far as hot weather goes , sometimes we get it sometimes not lol . Thanks for watching mate I appreciate it 🙏
it is possible to make it less hot. opening openings in the fairing, in the direction of displacement, so that the air that passes through the engine, follows in the direction of displacement. could be openings that close in winter
Love your reviews mate. I am buying an 01 ST 1100 tomorrow, I have had a very similar bike journey as yourself so relate 100%. At 56 it is time I stop riding the bikes I wanted as I grew up and could not afford them. The last bike was a 2000 model ZX6R, so yeah time for a good all-rounder to quench my riding thirst. After all, Australia is a big country to tour with lots of cake and sausage rolls with good coffee or tea.
I have just bought the ST1300 A-6 in white in good condition with 21000 miles on the clock for £4500. I'm 39 and going to do my advanced course in Jan. Last year I did the NC500 and the Lake District on my CB650R, which was a lot of fun but I reckon it would have been way more comfortable on the ST1300. I've had it for about a month and I've been tinkering with it since then. New Pirelli Angel GT tyres, reconditioned electrics, more comfortable seat cover, handlebar riser, fairing wind deflectors, rear crash bars, LED lighting, dashboard lighting revamp, heated grips, grip puppies, all the fluids flushed out and replaced, fully serviced and stripped and engine conditioned. Comfortable and fast.
I just picked up today a 1 owner 2005 ST1300 in mint condition, not a scratch with just 20,500 miles. Love it. Can't believe it's condition and super low miles
Had the 1100 for 6 months. Sold it back to my mate who’s still got it. Put 63,000 KM’s on it. Then bought the ST1300. Got to 100,000 then sold it (high mileage). Then no2 ST1300 crashed into a mini bus stopped on the highway picking up passengers! At 93,000kms. Took 2 yrs to get back on the road. So I bought no3. Sold it 2 yrs ago with 206,000 odd KM’s on it. Now no 3 has over 240,000 KM’s on it and the guy won’t sell it. No 2 now has over 210,000 KM’s on it. Still going strong. On the weave issue; I’ve had someone with the problem and sorted it for him. Pumped the tyres up to 2,9F and 3,1R and increased the rebound using the knob. His bike became very stable. He’s happy. And just for interest my other friend had a GL11000 gold wing, that one day, while we were ridding together almost threw his from a bad wobble. You see the ST1300 has a short wheelbase, so it corners the outside of my boots off, and handles like a Suzuki RGV250. But you must have it sorted to do high speeds. I’ve done a 560km trip, from Johannesburg to Durban, in 2hrs and 20 mins and a run from Johannesburg to CT in under 9 hours for the 1650 KM’s trip. So it can haul ass. Now I’ve been there and don’t need to do that. PS I also tow a 6ft car trailer using a hitch I designed. Looks crazy handles ok. The windshield issues come from the lube on the sliders. Keep them lubed and you won’t have problems. I use Motala oil and have a washable K&N air filter. Keeps maintenance costs down. Recently replaced the front brake rotors with ones from fleabay. All good. So in total done over 500,000 KM’s on the ST1300 and previously over half a million on my old GL1100s. Boring bike? Well not really. They are just sublime. Oh yes and can wheelie them quite easily 😮 Great bikes.
Your right, he does it all, and much better than all rest. Bought it in 1992 new, 30 years from know and he's doing marvelous. Hope to continue another 10 years and then I've got 71. Probably a good time to stop. Can't think of a day without him.
Just picked up a 2011 in really good nick (but high mileage) for £2200. It was from an old boy who has had it since new and taken it to Europe twice a year but is finally giving up bikes. Exactly the scenario you are talking about here really: a bike for life. Only ridden it the 100 miles home so far but I might actually be in love. It cruised so competently on the motorway with the screen up that I was expecting to be very underwhelmed once I got to the fun bits. I really wasn't. It overtakes so effortlessly even in top gear, and it corners better than my blackbird ever did...
I ride a 2015 ST1300 and a 2020 HD Street Glide 114ci Special and yes you have guessed correctly the Pan is a keeper the HD not so much. The Pan will be kept forever as my riding trophy.
Own a 2011 from new. It does everything well. Only complaint it’s a bit heavy in the really tight twisty roads. But out on smooth touring roads it’s a dream. Love it 😍
I've been riding mine since about 2013 - a 2005 bike. I've done 65000 miles on it. Wonderful bike, like an old sofa you never want to get rid of. I agree with you that it is the perfect motorbike - they are getting rarer and rarer. A decade from now, if not already, they will be in the collector market. I was also pleased to see that even a 2005 Pan ST1300 will pass the London Ulez requirements - if you have one, get the certification from Honda. Its just a bit of paperwork. Also they are very heavy on the clutch in city traffic - worth mentioning. Thanks for a great video.
I couldn't agree more, I bought my ST1300 in 2008 new, It is a 2006 model. I didn't like the color of the 2008 edition. Mine is black, I think it is the best color. No ABS, I didn't know better. Yet, I have never been more happy and proud of my bike and I have enjoy every bit of her. I have put over 40K miles on her. I still baby her. At one point I thought of selling it because I'm not riding as much, but I couldn't. Some years back, I used to ride with my ex. One day she told me, I can forgive you anything but if you ever sell this bike I will never forgive you. She and I didn't make it, but I still have my ST1300. She still looks great and I still get compliments on how good she looks ( my ST, not my ex... lol). There are a few things that she needed as upgrades, like cruise control, self canceling turn signals, LED head and rear lights, heated grips, modified the stock seat to be more comfortable in longer trips, insulation on the headers to minimize heat, specially during summer rides and that's about it. She is a beautiful motorcycle and does everything right. I have even gone off the tarmac exploring and she made it through just fine. As much as logic dictates, I cannot let her go, what can I say... By the way, I wouldn't think that was Honda's mistake, I think that is why it lasted so long without any modifications. It is a great bike even today. I think that is what Honda means, and I hope they continue to develop products that way. They are good looking and very long lasting. I think as a consumer, changing that moto would be a much much bigger mistake. I also own other Honda products like automobiles and generators and they are just as dependable and great. Therefore, in my view, they did just fine!
Great review. Thanks. I've had my 06 for 10 years. I previously toured on Goldwings but much prefer the ST for riding enjoyment and ergonomics. Just fits me better. Crisscrossed Canada and the US several times and it's been wonderful. It's made to tour not knock around town and it's definitely not a warm weather bike. Heading from Toronto to Alaska later this summer, super excited. I'd recommend the Bike Quip wide screen for any tall riders experiencing buffeting. I can ride with the screen at its lowest setting, not looking through it and have zero buffeting.
@@JonnyLeeguitarist fantastic video on 1300,I have a 08 ,as you said the bike has does everything, going to bike fest in few weeks for 2 days in Ireland 🇮🇪
Jonny!! Had an ‘03 ST1300 for almost 5 years. An absolute beauty of a machine. Wished it had cruise control … but the electronic windshield still is the BOSS! Road like a charm! Fast. Comfortable. Had to sell it for some college bills for my kids … 2 years ago got a ‘07 Goldwing! Can’t believe how great it rides!!! … just miss that electronic windshield!! Would love to ride with you someday JONNY!! Be Safe … Have Fun!
@@JonnyLeeguitarist … shockingly great Machine. I paid $7,600 for my ‘03 ST1300 in 2009. And $7,250 for my ‘07 Goldwing in 2020. At 1832 CC the Wing is FAST! Handles like a charm once it’s moving. I lost balance once putting on the center stand in storage … it slowly fell away from me … and settled on the front and rear crash bars. Not A Scratch on it … not one. Wife LOVES the back seat and loves to ride! I got her a 2010 Honda SH150i Scooter for her birthday this past July and she loves that too!!!
Because EVERYONE is different, with different taste, there are those that prefer the ST1100 over the ST1300 (yes, I'm in the US) and those that prefer the ST1300. I'm in the later group. I bought my "1st" ST1300 (a 2005 model) in late November 2005. At the time I was commuting off/on 100 miles a day. By November 2008, I changed jobs and started riding that ST1300 daily for a 125 miles commute. That added the miles on fast. So between then and March 2020, when I was sent home to work, my commuting had stopped. By then I had 5 different ST1300s. The first and last were new when bought, the other three were wrecks, that I restored and rode. Mileage on them: '05: 174.3K, '04: 37K -parked in 2015 due to waterpump fail - (just got it back on the road), '10: 95K -now has over 100K, '04#2: 50K - sold to a buddy, and a '12 - 35K. Currently I have over 397K miles on these bikes and I have no plans to sell any of them, just due to the fact, folks don't want to "pay" for them. They expect everyone to just give them away @ a cheap price. I'm actually hoping that they just might gain in value, now that more and more people are getting interested in them. In the meantime, I'll just ride them when I can! ;)
I get your point. The bikes are well crafted, reliable, and comfortable. Nothing today exceeds these values. So they did make a high point machine. Wise video, perhaps the wisest I've watched, Jonny Lee. However...this was a home run for Honda in every respect CERTAINLY NO MISTAKE...they always move one to betterland. (Concerned about yer spin rumptink.)
I'm on my 6th pan euro now. 3 1100s and 3 1300s. Best machines ive ever ridden and ive been a motorcyclist for 52 years. They do everything you could want from a motorbike. Performance, handling and great milage from those big tanks. No show just a proper m,bike made for professional motorcyclists.
I stopped at a Honda dealership in the middle of Minnesota on my Buell - they let me take an ST1300 out and I almost traded my ride in on the spot. Looking back, I should have - best bike I ever rode!
I think you are onto something, i.e. "the perfect bike". I owned mine for 15 years here in Australia. The best bike I have ever owned. Now in my mid 60's, the static weight was getting hard to handle so I recently sold it. Supremely comfortable and handles great for a big heavy bike. Great vid.
I had two St1300s and put 100k on both. I towed a Leesurlite after I’d had the 2003 for six years and was tired of sleeping on the ground. I found them both pretty noisy to ride. Aside from that and being a little tall in the saddle. That’s what led me to get a Goldwing. At 74 the ST1300 was more topheavy and the GW is pretty stable I loved the Saddlebags, they are huge and come off the bike so easily. My first came with a Corbin saddle that was a bit hard. I bought. $40 Beadrider cover and long mile days were easy. My 2nd ST was a 2009 and a pretty red color. It rode more planted than the 2003 did and running along at 90mph was effortless. I added the fairing deflector kit for better rain protection and a windscreen with a lip to push the wind up. Couldn’t have enjoyed a bike more. That said, I’m very happy with the 2015 GW. Other than range it’s all the tourer the ST could be.
Old 50!! , I had my Pan 1300 till I was 72. Magic piece of kit. Almost gives you every thing you want. The only other bike I had that was comparable was the Yam FJR1300. Keep it going. "Because I can" that's it keep going.
PERFECTION - Just picked up a 2002 in mint condition - 48000 on the clock - I was given 'Mates Rates' so under £3000 - I am age 65 and the Pan has always been on my bucket list - sits lovely next to my 1992 HD-FLSTC Heritage Classic ----------- What a fantastic Pair both entirely different rides but both are classics - COOL I previously had a 1200 Trophy and find the ST1300 lighter and more nimble in terms of road handling. I also totally agree the Pan brakes are excellent for such a heavy (weight) machine - my butt will never forget the first time I needed to slam them on hahahahaha
They handle well...but when they start tipping on the side just let it go. No use to try to keep 320kg coming on you...your back is going to thank you for not trying to keep it upstraight.Don't ask me how I know this...😂😂
Right My comment ,from Leeds UK 🇬🇧 originally, had ST1100 and onboard with comments ,I found lot people move onto Honda Goldwing eventually,it like Goldwing apprentice motorcycle, now Living Fortworth Texas on my third Goldwing ,and just recently got BMW k1600GTL and words don’t describe that machine ,great video pal Chris in Texas 🇺🇸
great review and getting to see some of the UKs country side and villages, just beautiful.. I have an 07 with 45k....thats miles. I use it everyday it is absolutely my favorite bike of all time. im gonna keep it. I love it, and here in Texas we ride all year round.. im 58 and yes it is an old mans sport bike, its graceful and looks amazing, and I find a lot of youngsters that ask if they can sit on it... Anyway thanx for the vid, and keep the rubber side down
I have driven my 2006 ST1300 with the Pan European Top case that has that small spoiler and the 3rd Brake light, took her up to 150 mph on a smooth highway in Arizona and no wobble or anything......I did have the V- Stream windshield on the down position, and was flat on the tank......she runs simply perfect.....
Fabulous Bike and great review/video, I almost bought a St1300 but had to rethink as I have had a Total Knee Replacement and the weight plus our driveway is a long gravel one, so I compromised and got myself the NT-700, so now I have a trio of Hondas, 1979 CB550/4, CB500X and the very comfortable NT-700, stay safe and enjoy that Pan.
Rob I had a TKR this past summer. I love to ride. What has been the hardest part for you? I have a Bandit 1200, a little hard to stay on for time. The 04 Triumph Thunderbird 900 is a little easier. I have an FJR1300, but haven't had a chance to ride it yet.
@@FirstnameLastName-sx8ls Not being able to bend my knee enough to sit on the bike, Scar Tissue caused me a lot of problems, Then I had an MUA procedure "Manipulation under Anesthesia which gave me an improved range of movement. I did buy a 650cc Suzuki Burgman Maxi Scooter which allowed me at least to get out and ride with my mates over the summer.
Im 34 driving honda cbr 600rr and since a week i own a st1100 for touring whit my doughter im loving it i dont care what peaple think a old mans bike etc great bike ride smooth proberly never gonna sell it 😄💪🏻
I have had both the ST1100 and the ST1300. The only downside I found was their when trying to move them in and out of the garage. Once on the move, the weight disappeared. Very balanced at slow speed. Huge presence on the road. 100mph easily achievable (on track. Honest!) Arthritis in my hands forced me to give up biking for good. Broke my heart to have to sell my pan.
I agree with your theory. I owned a ST1100 for more than 20 years. It's a bulletproof bike. I sold mine as I completely fell in love with the VFR1200F but I loved the ST1100 which, in my experience, was also more stable on higher speeds than the ST1300 but both are fabulous. Happy riding! BTW: good choice on the tyres. Bridgestones are definitely not the best tyres for this bike!
@@GlideYNRG indeed you have to fuel it more often but in general most of us take a short break after 2 to 2.5 hours of riding so filling it up is than no issue. Unless you live in an area where it is difficult to refuel, than you better have the big tank :). Happy riding!!
@@cmiguelq I'd like to chuck my leg over one to find out. Stock seat on the ST1300 can be a bit testing and bars can take a bit if sorting with risers . All takes cubic$$. Just sorted my seat with a TopSelleri from france and Helirisers Bars and got mine set right now.
What a beauty! As you ride both the ST1100 and the ST1300, what rides better? Do you notice the fuel tank being higher up on the ST1300? I love the ST1100 for its handling and wonder if the ST1300 is just as good... Thank you!
is the camera you are using a go pro? wouldyou tell me the model? I am filming with my bike , but the angle doesnt match like yours. thanks in advance!
my only complaint about Honda and the ST1300 is that they couldn'tbe bothered to do the engineering and engine redevelopment to make to make euro 5 compliant which is why they stopped making it. The detuned 1300lump in the CTX 1300 was Hondas attempt at meeting the emmisions regs'. That bike bombed. Honda seem to abandon redeveloping their motorcycle engines unlike their cars for whatever reason. They shot themselves in the foot by not competing directly with the BMW RT 1200 / 1250 series and continuing its develooment. I am convinced that on quality grounds alone the ST1300 would have eventually out shone and outsold the RT's. Having ridden both the RT's build quality is appalling and they are a swine to keep looking good and cost stupid money to service either as DIY or at a dealer. As qualified technician trained bike mechanic the ST is actually one of the best and easiest bikes I have ever had for self servicing, and maintainence. Yep, you're right it is the perfect motorcycle that was left by Honda to get left behind. Would I sell mine? Offer me what I think it's really worth and not what the book says its worth and I will tell you to wait until the next ST 1300 competitor comes to the market. My bike is 16years old and still almost as good as the day it left the show room with 43000 miles on the odo'. It has never had any mechanical issues. I havn't reached state retirement age yet but I am keeping mine too.
Wow. I just turned 66 and still ride my 2004 st that I purchased new. I agree with everything you say. After 18 yrs just tires, batteries, oil changes, and some break pads and thats it. Most trouble free bike ever. The weave rumor was just bs I feel. Rides like you are on rails!
I have to admit that I really liked the Pan' & I really wish that Honda had updated & continued making it. I probably would've bought one if I'd been able to get one new in 2021, but ended up with a Tracer 9gt which felt KINDA like an updated Pan' but with a sportier edge. I just wish Honda had stuck with the ST1300 instead of going for that NT1100.
@@JonnyLeeguitarist Yes, but don't get me wrong, there's a place for the NT1100, but not as a replacement for the Pan. A modern Pan, lighter, more fuel efficient & with better tech features, would be my Forever Bike. Imagine putting a shaft drive on something like the new Suzuki GSX 1000GT, you'd get the idea of what a 2023 Pan would be.
I own a 2005 Pan. Now done 126,000ks (80,000 miles). Only had to replace fork seals due to a little pitting of the stantions. But that can happen on a lot of bikes. It's an excellent machine,; and four friends have bought the Pan. I believe the reason production was stopped, was because the engine didn't meat Euro 5 regs, and more riders were turning to adventure bikes, so sales were diminishing.
I had an ST1300 I bought new in 2006. MY only complaints were the weight, a bit heavy for a small man like me but I could deal with that. Real problem was engine heat in summer. Living in the southern US our summers are long, hot and humid. Engine heat was unbearable on hot summer days and I won't ride without proper gear so I sold the bike after a year; otherwise, it was a lovely bike and wonderful on cold winter days.
True that, My '93 ST1100 still makes my commute too much fun, and did so for the last 13 years. At 64yo now i do find it a becoming bit of a pain moving it around the garage at 300+kgs. But i love riding it, and working on it, the simplicity, just replaced the starter solenoid, but also the timingbelt, clutch, fork seals, it's all very easy. Tyres are getting expensive though i find. Here in the netherlands, there's still a lot of em riding around, always put's a smile on our faces passing a like-minded old fart on the road. Can't make up my mind as to what should replace it to be honest, i've had a TDM, a 90's Triumph Triple, love the VFR800, but the ST1100 is by far the best commuter bike to me.
I get it. Love your humour and honesty. Like you I've had all types/ brands of bikes except a trials slow rock climber. At the end of the day it is just about the ride and still being able to ride at near 70. Current two wheels are Kymco AK 550 maxi scooter and Kawasaki ZG1000A17 (Concours). Like riding both but for different reasons and rides.
Pans are beast. Add a gonex 80L drybag and a Avon 3 nightfall tent and you are sorted. Just about to install a rear camera on the back so I can glance at a screen above dash. I have a UA-cam video of all the mods on mine and there are alot. Also available on the file section on the fb group
Shut the front door .. love it! Have had the electric windshield on both my bikes (Victory Vision & Honda Goldwing) after the ST and neither worked as well as my 2007 ST
I’ve owned two Harley Electra Glides and put A LOT of miles on them two up. I’ve currently got a 2006 ST 1300 with 10,000 miles on it. It does Everything better than the Harleys. Way roomier two up with a much better ride. And, you would have to spend a shit load of motor money on your Harley to even try to keep up with these 1300’s. Up grade the seats to a Sargent seat set and upgrade the exhaust to a Delkevic and you’re pretty close to the perfect bike.
I'm looking to do a euro tour next year. I'm torn between the pan 13 and Varadero. The only thing putting me off is the Pan weave, as I'm going to be continuously riding on motorways. Is the weave really that bad when it's fully loaded and no pillion?
Totally agree...I had an ST1100 (on your recommendation Johnny!!😂) til last July..the engine (huge miles) blew on me😮😮..it ticked boxes that I didn't even know existed for bikes.. Collecting a 52,000 mls ST1300 tomorrow and I just can't wait for the ride home. There's literally nothing these bikes aren't suitable for...maybe the desert..Ill never know..but they're the absolute best all rounder bike I can conceive of. Enjoyed this review big time as well mate. All the best buddy.👍🏼🫡😀
Great vid...I had a ZX14 and a 07 Harley Dyna super glide....I bought an 05 ST to offset the mileage off of the Dynaglide. My first impression was the ST was super boring. Yup, the Honda engineering is next to none. The motor is a sewing machine versus to ZX14 beast...but this bike grows on you....it is quick but not in a loud way....it doesn't do anything spectacular but it does nothing wrong....it is the most consistent bike I have ridden. Now what I see as problems...trying to back this bike up on a downhill grade....never going to happen...tooooo heavy so you get smart at parking. Full tank of petro and hear....ST is top heavy and you can feel it but you get used to it. 29 ;iter gas tank is great...can go 450 km before fill up...but who does that. Overall bike is a great bike that is the best kept secret...shssss!
Did you ever address the main complaint? I gave up after 16 minutes. I'll share my PAN WEAVE story. I bought my 1992 three years ago with 65K miles. It seemed huge at first after being on a 1986 KZ1000 for years. On the ride home I was doing 65-70 in fairly heavy interstate traffic and was loving it until I caught the wind behind an 18 wheeler. I was buffeted all over my lane and it scared the shit out of me, the KZ never did that. Arriving home I did the online search and learned about the Pan Weave. One comment suggested removing the top pannier which I did straight way. I could not believe the massive improvement in stability when confronted by buffeting winds of various kinds. I have never replaced the top pannier and it will go with a warning if I ever sell the bike. Cheers.
Just bought 10 plate 1300, had enough ov plastic bullets, thankyou 4 convincing me ov my choice, hope I don't regret it,57yr old still think I'm 40. I like 2 c where I'm riding
What you say is *almost* correct. Because the tankslapper police-killer ST1300 was corrected in 2003, and late 03 bikes and newer don't have that problem. So it was definitly updated.
Nice one mate, i drive a similar st, also an ex police bike. looking foreward to go to Hamburg and poland this september with it. Cheers for the nice video.
Damn that ST13 looks amazing in white, white was only available in police spec here in Canada as well. I love my '03 but I'm starting to see difficulties arising, like I don't think I can get a Road 6 front tire anymore as far as I know as well as some other Honda parts. The bike got stuck in the shop after somebody backed into it and I picked up a '13 FJR to ride in the interim, great bike same class/tier with the sweet inline-4 and real cruise control. I just posted the ST for sale tonight in fact, I might have to go edit the price after watching this.
I've had my ST1300 for 8 years. Never had any issues. Does it all: great weather protection, quiet, fast, handles well, large tank (29L) good mileage. So range in Canada is great. Only negative, hot when stuck in traffic. I'm in my late 60's, To make it absolutely perfect Honda could add the following: cruise control, a 6th gear, some addition electronics.
72k on my 1st ST1100, test rode on 13 and bought another 1100 which I put another 20k on, before the weight on a gravel drive made me swap for an RT. You are spot on, Honda made the perfect touring bike in the PAN EURO ST1100, not so much the 1300.
@@rossr372 the shape is better comfort wise for me , you’re more in the bike than on the bike . Reliability is slightly better aswell . I like the 1300 but the 1100 is a much better bike . IMO
@@JonnyLeeguitarist Thanks for replying. I ride a Blackbird which is an absolutely amazing bike too. Try to ride one that has it's suspension improved someday. ST is on my list of wanna rides. Based on your comments and those of a few others ST1100 will be my first choice over the 1300. I wish that they had put fuel injection in it as I live in an area where the riding season is short and the fuel has that darned ethanol. I like the fact that the fuel sits low on the Pans. The Blackbird always feels top heavy and can be tricky in parking lots. Honda made so many outstanding bikes in the late 90's (ST, VFR800, Blackbird, Fireblade, VTR1000) that it eventually boils down to personal preference and needs. Don't need to spend big bucks to have a lot of fun!
Great review. I've had my theory on the ST if you might have seen... But... The bike being 'too perfect' is pretty spot on... Never thought of it that way. Great review! 👍
What do you think about the Pan weave? I keep hearing conflicting opinions about it: some say it happens regardless of tire pressure and top case, and others say it doesn't.
My 1300 didn’t have it at first , then it started , I got rid of the 1300 and stayed with the 1100 , it’s a way better bike . Basically some weave some don’t .
Great review. Yes agree with the ST1100, which I ride to work every day throughout the year. I do about 40 miles per day. The only problem can be in the poor road conditions in rural Cornwall where I live. I have dropped it more than I would like and, need to get new mirrors and indicators. Fine on major roads, which I tried to stay on. My st1100 has been mine for about 7 years, and has about 80,000 miles. I am looking at another bike for the poor roads, possibly the three wheeler. E.g Yamaha Niken and the st1100.
I own a 2023 Hayabusa. I often get asked how fast it goes and I always answer "It does the limit". Bikes like the Hayabusa and the mighty ZZR1400 (I had a 2020 model) are about much more than just speed. The Pan is a great bike but I would rather have a Wing (I have owned 2) if I want a dedicated touring machine. If I was looking for something more upright I would personally choose the mighty FJR over the Pan. Nonetheless, enjoyed this video...
nice video ! i ve had both of them, prefered the st 1100 for the old school look and engine sound (the injection kind of whistles a bit..)now back on a varadero but miss my 2001 st 1100 , cheers from France
In my opinion, the reason that the Pan did not sell well was that Honda wanted to protect its Gold Wing sales. Therefore, the Pan had little or no advertising, nor much updating. A shame, really. I had my 2004 ST1300 ABS (Pan) for 5 years, riding over 50K miles. A very good bike, spoiled by poor suspension with too little fork rake, and too dim lighting. I added a Penske shock with a 1300 pound spring to the rear, and Race Tech fork dampers with Sonic, 1.2Kg/mm springs to the front. That raised the front-end about one inch (dynamic sag), and the back-end about one-half inch. That, and PIAA 910 lights on Seng mounts, and fog lights mounted on the tip-over covers made 75 mph cruising at night a joy. Perfect!
I on number 2 st1300 now.I tried a k1600gt with reverse gear because of a bad knee. Couldn't wait to get rid of it and back to a pan again. Honda ,make a new one ,ill buy one.
totally spot on about hondas mistake. I,ve got an 11 and would not change it for anything although i have not ridden the 13. Before the pan i had a couple of ex plod beemers, compared to the honda they are top heavy and gutless
I have owned the ST1100, the BMW RT1150, and the BMW K1100rs, and and '01 Kawi Concours. Each have their merits and detractors, I found. The Kawi was ugly and very buzzy, but that Ninja 1000 engine was sublime sounding. The BMW RT1150 was smooth as silk, but I constantly worried about costly maintenance repairs, especially to the drive shaft splines. The gearbox was quite clunky though. The K1100rs was a dream bike really. It was amazing. Problem for me was the riding position was horrible. Heli bars didn't really fit right, no matter the adjustment, and they blocked my view from my mirrors in most positions. Since I acquired the ST, I've pretty much determined I have a "forever" seat for my rear end. It is smooth, starts every time, is extremely reliable, and decently quick (at least to my meager ways of driving). I also love the clarity in the gauge cluster. No fancy LCD crap that gets blinded in sunlight, just pure analog sweeping needles. Ahhh... and the gearing is perhaps the best of all of the bikes. I'll often be in 4th at 65-70 and have to remind myself I have yet another upshift to do!
@@SinnerSince1962 I wish it had another gear as when in first going around roundabouts or in traffic, the engine braking when you button of is really strong. Would be nice to have a gear between 1st and 2nd
I had a ST11 for 20 some years and 20k some miles. I’m tall and found the knee angle getting uncomfortable. A friend the showed up on a 2017 CrossTour VFR1200x, a bit rare here in the states. I was much more comfortable on that and it’s a vey fine machine too
i have the 750s, i love the bike, its bullet proof which most are if looked after, i would love a pan, the only thing putting me off is the fuel consumption, after getting 70 to 90 mpg its hard to come down from that, but as far as bikes go, well, i followed one on an advanced group ride out, i couldn't believe the smoothness of it, it was a pleasure to follow.
Fuel consumption on the ST1100 is actually very good. Of course it depends how throttle heavy you drive but on average I reached 21 km per liter easy (touristic driving mode). When driving fast on the highway it was around 18.5km per liter. My VFR 1200 consumes (a lot) more and interesting enough, the other way around. When I drive touristic, consumption is around 16.5 km per liter but when I drive on the highway with higher speeds I can reach 20km per liter.
I too am a Pan owner and agree with your view that Honda have created the perfect bike and like your clip on both pannies ... had a few GPZ900R`s then an Aprilia 650 could`nt live with that and ended up buying the best bike, Pan 1100. like your bike clip though and your honest no bollocks review. not so keen on the guitar stuff, but everyone to their own. 100% agree with what you said. But the cake thing is really what you need to watch out for (you cracked me up there!!). Honda literally canabalised a few markets of their own in one. Goldwing - canibalised. CBR bikes - canibalised. Cruisers - canibalised. I had a Kaw Vulcan 1500 before and it was night and day going to the ST1300. Still have my 04 and have been thinking of selling. Problem is where do I go next ? I have a very capable sports bike (0-60mph in 3.2s FFS - it’s a damn quick bike!!) and a long distance cruiser if I want it. Best of almost every world. Yes it’s boring but it’s a tool bike that does everything well. I can’t justify selling. Might get another smaller sports just for fun and show-off days but those epic long journey’s belong to the ST!
Totally agree with what you said about changing the way you look at bikes as you age. Do not agree with what you said about the vest. The whole idea of wearing this vest is you get noticed. Lets face it works as you spot them yourself. Thinking of getting a pan as I'm now retired and my zzr 600 is just too fast and not what I need anymore.
@Jonny Lee thanks for the reply. I have an 2004 FJR 23K moles and it needs new plastic. I see a 1994 ST1100 for sale. $2K and 10K miles. I may have to get it. Both don't seem bad.
I bought the first year FJR 1300 and for some odd reason it put my right hand to sleep very quickly. It also didn’t have a 6th gear which I found annoying. I sold it and didn’t own a tourer for a few years. Saw a 1998 ST 1100 with 10,000 miles on it about 8 years ago and bought it. Still have it and it’s at 14,000 miles thus far. First thing I dad was install new tires and extend the rear fender to protect the swing arm. I painted the swing are and exhaust system with POR-15 to prevent the rusting problem. It’s the best tourer I’ve had.
Enjoyed watching your video. I want to get back in to biking and touring but I can't decide between the Honda NT700v (Deauviille) and the Honda ST1300? I'm a little worried about the weight of the ST Pan, but then I also want a bike which I can tour on two up. Any advice or advantages/disadvantages between the two bikes will be welcome from you or any of the biker friends who have commented on this thread. Thanks a lot and safe riding!
Had my ST for thirty years now, thought about getting something else but but the ST just does the job so well.

Thanks for watching.
Thanks for explaining in some detail (was aware of swing arm associated issues on ST1100 but not possible solutions).👍

Exactly 😎
I have a 37 Year old Goldwing 1200...still runs like a new Bike...why change it?
Did my Apprenticeship a long time ago with Hondas.....I knew how good they were way back in the Sixties.
That v4 is a definite character 👍
@Roger_Ramjet yep it’s awesome
Yeah it’s definitely just getting going at 54k , my 1100 has 72000 on it and is sweet as a nut .
Mine st1100 1993y on clock has 163k km and still go pretty good.
@@lemantoske not a surprise
Yeah been here all my life . Thanks for watching mate I appreciate it .
Definitely the smart man’s bike 😎
5,500 is a NEW ST1300. Seriously. Hope she has more mile now but even so it’s still pretty new!
I bought mine when I was in my 30’s. That was in 2004!
Cheers mate
Brutally hot? Never ridden a Buell then. Nomex is a necessity, not a fashion-choice.

Cakes , sausage rolls , coffee and motorbikes. Sounds perfect mate . Come back and tell me what the st1100 is like 😉
I have just bought the ST1300 A-6 in white in good condition with 21000 miles on the clock for £4500.
Yeah the advanced course is awesome 😎. Distance on these bikes is a joy .
I just picked up today a 1 owner 2005 ST1300 in mint condition, not a scratch with just 20,500 miles. Love it. Can't believe it's condition and super low miles
That sounds awesome!
Oh yes and can wheelie them quite easily 😮
Great bikes.
Sorry that’s Motual oil.
Goldwing is next on my list
PS great review Johnny
@@JonnyLeeguitarist I’d not go there because the ST1300 is actually more adaptable

Yeah it’s weird how they can do that , they definitely surprise you . Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
Whats hi mileage...these bikes are baby goldwings and go 300-500 thousand miles....most never do stop and go in cities...to big...all easy miles/kms.

Yeah me to. These pans will definitely stay with me .
Own a 2011 from new. It does everything well. Only complaint it’s a bit heavy in the really tight twisty roads. But out on smooth touring roads it’s a dream. Love it 😍
Yeah this thing weighs a ton ! 😂
I agree they’ll definitely be collectible classics soon .
Awesome! , thanks for watching.
Women who say if you lose something I will NEVER forgive you are already your ex girlfriend
That’s everything an ST should be used for , have a great trip and thanks for watching I appreciate it.

Yeah I love em !
In the meantime, I'll just ride them when I can! ;)
Yeah they’re definitely really popular again .
Thanks for watching mate I appreciate it .
Great commentary about the ST1100, I had one of these bikes and could not believe how comfortable it was to ride.
Cheers mate , yeah it’s mind blowing how good they are .
I agree .
I stopped at a Honda dealership in the middle of Minnesota on my Buell - they let me take an ST1300 out and I almost traded my ride in on the spot. Looking back, I should have - best bike I ever rode!
Yeah they’re pretty special.
I think you are onto something, i.e. "the perfect bike". I owned mine for 15 years here in Australia. The best bike I have ever owned. Now in my mid 60's, the static weight was getting hard to handle so I recently sold it. Supremely comfortable and handles great for a big heavy bike. Great vid.
Thanks for watching mate i appreciate it .
At 74 the ST1300 was more topheavy and the GW is pretty stable
I loved the Saddlebags, they are huge and come off the bike so easily.
Yep the Goldwing is next for me . Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
@@JonnyLeeguitarist Goldwing doesn’t have the same fuel range as the ST1300. Bit of a compromise if you’re into Iron Butt riding distances!
That’s an awesome bike for $4,000. ST’s are the shit. Big following here in the States. You scored bro
Yeah man they’re awesome
Old 50!! , I had my Pan 1300 till I was 72. Magic piece of kit. Almost gives you every thing you want. The only other bike I had that was comparable was the Yam FJR1300. Keep it going. "Because I can" that's it keep going.
Right on!
The Stanchions pitting on front forks? DO you think maybe thats a travel time v exposed metal at front causing the pitting inwards ?
Yes , but also the age of the bike .
Great video, about a motorcycle that deserves more attention. I learned a lot. Thanks for sharing. From Reggio Calabria 🇮🇹
Cheers mate
PERFECTION - Just picked up a 2002 in mint condition - 48000 on the clock - I was given 'Mates Rates' so under £3000 - I am age 65 and the Pan has always been on my bucket list - sits lovely next to my 1992 HD-FLSTC Heritage Classic ----------- What a fantastic Pair both entirely different rides but both are classics - COOL
I previously had a 1200 Trophy and find the ST1300 lighter and more nimble in terms of road handling. I also totally agree the Pan brakes are excellent for such a heavy (weight) machine - my butt will never forget the first time I needed to slam them on hahahahaha
Yeah it’s odd how they handle so well for a heavy bike .
They handle well...but when they start tipping on the side just let it go. No use to try to keep 320kg coming on you...your back is going to thank you for not trying to keep it upstraight.Don't ask me how I know this...😂😂
Yeah I’ve been there 😂
Butt or nuts???
The St1300 is a work horse. It goes and goes and goes. Nothing too exciting but it does many miles without issue.
Exactly

Sounds like a great setup
Fabulous Bike and great review/video, I almost bought a St1300 but had to rethink as I have had a Total Knee Replacement and the weight plus our driveway is a long gravel one, so I compromised and got myself the NT-700, so now I have a trio of Hondas, 1979 CB550/4, CB500X and the very comfortable NT-700, stay safe and enjoy that Pan.

I have one ST1300 / 2007 and a will never trade it for another!!! Fantastic bike!!!
Yes ! They’re epic
Sorry to hear that mate . I agree about the weight thing .
Yeah I love the 1100 way more . Thanks for watching mate I appreciate it.
Nearly dropped my coin on the VFR1200F but the fuel capacity was the big killer for me. Was familiar with the ST1300 soooo no brainer.
@@GlideYNRG indeed you have to fuel it more often but in general most of us take a short break after 2 to 2.5 hours of riding so filling it up is than no issue. Unless you live in an area where it is difficult to refuel, than you better have the big tank :). Happy riding!!
I have an Vfr1200f, talking about confort, the St1300 its a huge upgrade?

What a beauty! As you ride both the ST1100 and the ST1300, what rides better? Do you notice the fuel tank being higher up on the ST1300? I love the ST1100 for its handling and wonder if the ST1300 is just as good... Thank you!

@korva010 no problem let me know if you get it sorted .
my only complaint about Honda and the ST1300 is that they couldn'tbe bothered to do the engineering and engine redevelopment to make to make euro 5 compliant which is why they stopped making it.
Great points made mate .
Wow. I just turned 66 and still ride my 2004 st that I purchased new. I agree with everything you say. After 18 yrs just tires, batteries, oil changes, and some break pads and thats it. Most trouble free bike ever. The weave rumor was just bs I feel. Rides like you are on rails!
@@stanleywhite2740 that’s awesome you’ve kept the same bike so long .
Yeah I really don’t like the NT1100 at all .
@@dumptrump3788 I completely agree .
Yup, I have a 1999 ST1100 , bought a new 2019 Goldwing tour. Still have a difficult time deciding which one to ride.
Having 2 pans is actually the reason I haven’t bought a Goldwing yet .
Valid points 😎
I had an ST1300 I bought new in 2006. MY only complaints were the weight, a bit heavy for a small man like me but I could deal with that. Real problem was engine heat in summer. Living in the southern US our summers are long, hot and humid. Engine heat was unbearable on hot summer days and I won't ride without proper gear so I sold the bike after a year; otherwise, it was a lovely bike and wonderful on cold winter days.
Yeah they’re a bit warm
Agreed the 1100 is perfect 👌🏻

Yeah I’ve changed the seat already , I think I’ll leave the exhaust tho , I kinda like the quiet .
I'm looking to do a euro tour next year. I'm torn between the pan 13 and Varadero. The only thing putting me off is the Pan weave, as I'm going to be continuously riding on motorways.
Is the weave really that bad when it's fully loaded and no pillion?
Some have it ,some don’t . Mine didn’t have it at all . There’s more that don’t weave than do .

Cheers.
Some weave some don’t , it’s a weird thing . My 1300 never did . But a friend of mine with the same bike did …

What you say is *almost* correct. Because the tankslapper police-killer ST1300 was corrected in 2003, and late 03 bikes and newer don't have that problem. So it was definitly updated.

Good luck 😎
Hi mate. Can you explain again what the main problem of front forks?
It’s fork seals and stanchions , they pit and always need replacing , you have to replace the stanchions or there’s no point doing the seals.
@@JonnyLeeguitarist Stanchions??? Is there a special kind of after market stanchion for st or you mean just replace them with oem new ones?
@@İkitekerşart it’s a gamble finding decent used ones as they can have the same problems . Not sure you can still buy OEM .
Yes , they would be great add ons !
72k on my 1st ST1100, test rode on 13 and bought another 1100 which I put another 20k on, before the weight on a gravel drive made me swap for an RT. You are spot on, Honda made the perfect touring bike in the PAN EURO ST1100, not so much the 1300.
Yeah I love them both , the 1100 is special to me tho .
Could you elaborate as to why the 1100 is better?
Yeah the weight of it can be hard, but I still love it .

Perfect!
You could be right about the Goldwing .

I'll often be in 4th at 65-70 and have to remind myself I have yet another upshift to do!

i have the 750s, i love the bike, its bullet proof which most are if looked after, i would love a pan, the only thing putting me off is the fuel consumption, after getting 70 to 90 mpg its hard to come down from that, but as far as bikes go, well, i followed one on an advanced group ride out, i couldn't believe the smoothness of it, it was a pleasure to follow.
I don’t find it to bad on mpg for what I do . And yes they are so smooth to ride and watch . Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
I think you nailed it. I had a 91 ST1100 that I would still be riding if I hadn't totaled it. miss that bike.
Great bikes , hopefully you’ll be back on another, thanks for watching.
I've got a 30k mile st1100. For $1500 american. Perfect condition corbin seat performance mods already done.
Gotta love em ! 😎
I've been looking for a carbon-fiber dickend for my ST. Who makes them and where can I get one? Thanks! :)
😂😂
I too am a Pan owner and agree with your view that Honda have created the perfect bike and like your clip on both pannies ... had a few GPZ900R`s then an Aprilia 650 could`nt live with that and ended up buying the best bike, Pan 1100. like your bike clip though and your honest no bollocks review. not so keen on the guitar stuff, but everyone to their own. Aaron from Angus in Scotland.
Cheers dude I appreciate you watching.
@@JonnyLeeguitarist oogh I forgot ... my Wife bakes cakes and sausage rolls up here in Angus for a living, thought I'd share that one with you. FEEDMEFULL stand - Market every 2nd Saturday, 9-1pm John Street, Forfar, Angus, (don't know if this is allowed on this thread) pop in and sample the merchandise next time your up NE Scotland.
P.s. I'm a lucky man ...
Mate ! I’ll ride thru rail hail and snow for that !
'Polite Hi Viz' I'm with you on that. Those guys must have a right old chuckle over their coaco.
Absolutely no need to wear one of those at all .
I had a ST 1300 for years , easy to ride for a biggun , only gripe , hot legs in the summer.
Yes ! , red hot in the summer .
Definitely the ST is a mile muncher , just like me with cakes 😎
@@JonnyLeeguitarist Battenberg all round for the lads right ???
@@GodzillaGoesGaga definitely not
I’m guessing that the ST is not a cafe raced but has become your Greggs Bakery fat and furious machine! Oops, I meant “Fast and Furious” 😁
Got to do what works for you mate . Thanks for watching I appreciate it.
A normal HI VIS javcket or vest will get you noticed. Be prepared for conflict, abuse or unwanted issues if wearing a POLITE vest.
What's your take on the ST1100 vs FJR1300? Also, never knew about the polite vest😅.
I like the FJR , heavy bike tho , smooth power , i road one as a job bike in London for a while . I prefer the 1100 pan tho as it’s easier to handle .
@Jonny Lee thanks for the reply. I have an 2004 FJR 23K moles and it needs new plastic. I see a 1994 ST1100 for sale. $2K and 10K miles. I may have to get it. Both don't seem bad.
@@FirstnameLastName-sx8ls yes ! Sounds like a bargain.
