I had this for years before being diagnosed by my doctor doctor following a run of styes. She didn’t give me much advice but I developed a huge chazalion and was referred to an othalmologist who explained more about this. I’ve also now developed periocular dermatitis and believe there can be a relationship between the two ailments. Once I get through the dermatitis , she suggested an optician who gives some sort of heat treatment for bleparitis so I’ll look forward to working with her on that. ‘t
Hey thanks for another insightful video! I confirmed with A.I that as elevation increases, the air really does get drier which can worsen dry eyes issues! I think those living in high rise buildings should be made aware of this
@@DoctorEyeHealth Any level. Its not necessarily about the buildings height, but rather the natural decrease in air pressure and humidity the higher you are off the ground. A.I says "taller buildings say, 20-30 stories might be more prone to noticeable differences in air dryness between upper and lower floors". I'm living on just the 12th floor and shortly after moving in got extremely dry eyes unlike ever in my life. Then theres the ventilation systems to make things worse too :(
I'm watching on the replay. My doctor said I have dry eye/ blepharitis a few years ago and suggested heated masks. Recently my new eye doctor said I have optical rosacea, and she prescribed Xiidra and daily use of heat masks.
Hey! 👋 yes, cataract surgery and other forms of eye surgery are known triggers for making dry eye worse. I have touched on that in previous episodes but it was a bit outside of the conversation in this particular education. How has your dryness been? Anything helping?
That’s when I got dry eyes as well, I’ve been on Restasis for many years and just this year they finally came out with a generic one, works and way cheaper.
Replay crew checking in! I didn't have dry eyes until we moved to the desert in Calif in my 30s. It didn't become noticeable until my 40s when I was working as an orthodontic dental assistant and found myself concentrating on teeny tiny wires, little holes in brackets for those wires, not blinking enough and perimenopause to top it off. My eyes watered like Niagara falls! Then in my 50's I was using trentinoin for dark spots on my face and suddenly my eyes became deserts. Stopped that stuff very quickly! My optometrist says I have MGD (and I can see plugged glands in my lids) so I've been on Restasis but now it makes my eyes itch so I'm trying Xiidra. Wow, the bad taste with that is intense! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us! ❤ Will cataract surgery intensify dry eye symptoms? I'm needing it soon and curious how all the post op drops can effect MGD?
Thanks for sharing!! Surgery on the eyes, including cataract surgery is know to induce dry eye flair ups. It is often recommended to treat dry eye intensely before cataract surgery to improve the surgical outcome and decrease post op symptoms. Happy to hear you are doing a bit better and being so pro-active!
Dr I have a question my Optomologist telling me to take I table spoon of Flax seed oil. I love to hear your thoughts. I haven’t heard u talking abt this. My doc saying flax seed oil help liquify the oil. Please advise.
Hey! There are a few studies on flax seed oil for dry eyes, although they usually are a higher dose. Any idea how many mg of oil is in that tablespoon?
@@DoctorEyeHealth Hey Doc Thanks for reaching me back. I think it’s about 15000 Mg per tablespoon. I could be wrong. Also my Optomologist was saying take Doxicycline 50 mg as a maintenance dose for everyday to prevent stye. What your take on that I really don’t want to take antibiotics. if I don’t have to don’t want to end with resistance due to taking too much antibiotics. Thanks much Doc. Appreciated.
@annalisa14 agree. I started doing alot more on my new phone for the last year. Now diagnosed with dry eye, after my eyes were red and feeling awful, went for a exam. When I told the Dr I was using my phone alot more than I ever had, she dismissed it as the cause, but I can tell the difference when I purposely stay off of it. I drink alot of distilled water and 20 oz of electrolyte water each day. Only other drink is 8oz coffee each day, no alcohol. Take a krill capsule each day, and sleep with a humidifier on. Dr recommend I use systane PF, and have for over 1 yr now. It helps briefly when I first wake up
Hey doc, I am using a eye mask called PGG Eye Massage Instrument. It blows warm steam into eyes and I found it so much better than hot press. Hot press makes me feel very dry after use. The steam of PGG makes my eyes moist, and I will do the message you recommended after use and it do relief my dry eye symptoms. I just checked, it is unfortunately not available in Amazon. I am from Hong Kong and brought it from PingDouDou (the China parent company of Temu) at around USD 30 only. It has been a life-saver for me, and hope it help other dry-eyed friends as well!
high high quality omega 3 and probiotics supplementation mostly fixed it for me after years of struggle. I believe my gut was leaky which caused malabsorption of nutrients, and chronic inflammation, which manifested in my dry eyes

I was just diagnosed with MGD and was given low-dose doxycycline and Zocufoam as an eyelid cleaner. Zocufoam caused severe and prolonged burning and irritation. Now I’m scared to do any sort of eyelid hygiene. do you have any suggestions?
I have MGD along with a condition called Epithelial Basement Membrane Dystrophy which gives me recurrent cornea erosions. This means I cannot use Lipiflow, because Lipiflow is advised against for people who get cornea erosions. I am distrustful of IPL treatments for the same reason. Even though there is not much research against it, I think anything that pulses against my eyeball could potentially give me another erosion attack. I am now looking into some of the other treatment methods you mentioned. Your video was very helpful. Thanks!
Watching on the replay--I have been diagnosed with dry eye but I have never heard of the MGD or told I have this condition. I was told use the OTC artificial tears or lubricating drops by Systane by the opthamologist I consulted.
I once went to your clinic as a regular patient but I had perfect eyes wanting a routine eye check (I dont do that normally). I only wanted see you and your killer blue eyes
I believe it’s recommended for everyone, even healthy people, to have the pressure in the eyes checked annually, so that if glaucoma is starting, you can catch it early. My understanding is that there are no symptoms of high IOP until damage has been done. Is this correct, Dr.? I have glaucoma, which was caught at an annual exam. I am using Brinzolamide and Zioptan. Settled on these after trying many drops to which I reacted badly. I use Systane Complete, Refresh Optive and Refresh Mega with Flaxseed Oil for dryness. I have had no MGD. I asked my ophthalmologist why he didn’t check me for it and he said because I have no symptoms or complaints that would lead him to suspect that, but he would check to make sure if I wanted. He pinched my eyelids and said everything was working well.
47 years old . Never had. Eye problem until now. Seen my specialist an said I have blepharitis I've had two ulceration of the cornea. Out of the blue.ive had heet goggles ILP treatment. . Now every night have to put a thick lubrication into each eyes.
What are your thoughts on the supplement "Hydroeye"? I just started my third bottle. I want to say I've noticed a little improvement, but I still have random flare ups and I can't pinpoint what's causing that. I'm not on any prescription drops and only use the usb heat mask (with a moistened paper towel in between) once to twice a day.
I have suffered for a very long time with dry eyes. I was referred to the hospital but can’t recall them mentioning meiboniam glands. I was given day eye drops and night eye gel. Got discharged without success
@@DoctorEyeHealth Yes a specialist looked at my dry eye problem and I attended the appointment given to me. It was long time ago. I cannot remember what was the reason given. I had also my ear op done twice and nose op done too. At the moment I have a hole in the ear and I refused another op as was told it might or might work. Stop hear noises in my ear constantly. For eye I think same reason it might or not. As I mentioned it was long time ago but I will try and look at my paper work from the hospital. Thank you for your notification. Hi Joseph, thank you for all your videos. It has helped me better understand my MGD and also RCE. A doctor in my community offers PRP (platelet rich plasma) tears, a treatment for helping with dry eyes. I am interesting in hearing people's opinions on whether PRP is more or less helpful than autologous tears for patients who have MGD.
Has anyone considered CPAP mask effects? Since diagnosis of sleep apnea and wearing a mask at night my eyes are much drier. The exhaust air blowing over the eyes all night every night is an issue. I have tried many masks and they all have that same issue. No one seems concerned. Is anyone checking into this?
Watching replay. Thank you for all the time you put into your videos - very helpful and educational. Last year, severe pain and pressure gripped my left eye while I was driving. It felt like my eye was going to explode. It hit so hard and unexpectedly that I yelled and almost went off the road. Fortunately it eased off. Anyway, the ophthalmologist took me in as an emergency which, at the time, I didn't understand. I was diagnosed with accute narrow-angle (angle closure) glaucoma in both eyes. It is considered a medical emergency when an attack occures because it can lead to blindness within minutes to a few hours. I had to educate my medical doctor about this - after all, it's just glaucoma :) My ophthalmologist prescribed Timilol which has definitely, in my opinion, led to my dry eye symptoms.
I’m so thankful you got in so quickly and they were able to help you! But yes, while glaucoma medications can be amazing they sadly can contribute to dry eye. Hope all is well!
Not a single word about Anxiety/depression and Dry eyes. Ive heard so many people getting dry eyes due to anxiety. Myself have like 30 diff symptoms just from anxiety. The last 8 months ive been Mega depressed and had panic attacks cause of the dry eye ive gotten. And the cycle is just horrible.
Hi Doctor, I had my eye lasik surgery 3 years back and my eye pressure is now 18 and 16 without adding any points. CCT is 492 and 497. Is it something to worry about? Is my eye pressure normal? It would be great if you reply
In general, eye pressures below 20 or 21 mmHg is considered normal. However, the safety of eye pressure is relative to the health of the optic nerve and it's risk for damage. Has your doctor expressed concern for your optic nerves?
@@DoctorEyeHealth he checked my optic nerve and it’s totally fine he did the tests as well all were clear. I have heard that thin corneas show less pressure, is it true?
Great video. Lots of great information. Wish I lived closer to you so I could make an appointment with you. I’ve done so many things. Lipiflow, IPL, omega 3, warm compress, doxycycline 20 mg. I thought the IPL helped but I got some floaters after my third or fourth treatment so I’m afraid to do that again. Do you think IPL causes floaters or was that a coincidence? I also think the doxycycline 20mg is helping a lot, but I’m worried about the long term gut damage. Ever since I’ve been taking it, my inflammation has been so much better though. Just got prescribed Xdemvy. When my eyes feel irritated, it’s usually along my eyelashes. Also, my eyes get filmy sometimes and that drives me nuts. My doctor says this could help. She said what you said, the mites eat the oils. She did say it looks like I’m producing enough good oil. So hoping this medication helps then maybe get off the doxycycline. Do you think I’m headed in a good direction? Thanks so much and thanks for the great content and information you provide!!
Wow thanks for sharing all that! Tough for me to say the IPL is what caused the floaters, I would say unlikely but I also don’t know the exact procedure your doctor was using. But it sounds like you have come a long way and happy that you have a provider that is on top of the research and treatment options. Hope things go well with the new medication!
Good question. There are some concerns regarding the use of baby shampoo as the ingredients have changed over time and some of the ingredients are now associated with damage to the glands and a disrupted tear film. Many old textbooks in eye care still recommend it but the current research says otherwise.
I have this gland dysfunction too. I get terribly blurred vision. It ruins my day to day life. It's awful. I have had punctual plugs put in which helped for a few weeks and I had a massive change in a positive way though now it's getting worse again 😞 I finally felt normal again but now back to square one. X I have no clue what to do x
Hey thanks for asking! Most eye doctors will recommend a preservative free eye drop as an artificial tear. There are some publications that support use of preservative free glaucoma medications as well, when a patient is not a candidate for other forms of glaucoma treatment (such as SLT for example).
I don’t like the diagnosis being called “dry eye”. It sort of tosses too many different problems into one basket. DED doesn’t always create a dry eye. We need to identify the specific problem and design specific treatments for each. I’m a huge fan of identifying inflammation in the tear film to start. If yes, go this way, if no go that way. Check osmolarity. Test test test to get to the root of the problem. If only all doctors were as thorough and passionate as the man who makes these videos! Too many doctors don’t take time to do it right and patient outcomes suffer as a result
Auoimmune disease for sure contributes to ocular inflammation and dry eye disease. I did do a livestream on autoimmune conditions last year if you did not catch that one, ua-cam.com/users/live72x6bF45TwU
Good question! Allergies can definitely make dry eyes worse and more likely, as allergens disrupt the tear film and produce more inflammation on the ocular surface, often times allergies seem to multiply dry eye symptoms or trigger a dry eye flair up. Any surgical procedure on the eye can trigger a dry eye event , but canthoplexy, interestingly enough, can also help with dry eye when it helps the tear film stay better on the eye.
Never had dry eye before cataract surgery and had LALs. Can the light delivery device for LAL cause MGD? The dry eye didn’t start until 3 months later during the lock in procedures. Also, can bletharoplasty with an ophthalmology plastic surgeon with muscle repair CORRECT MGD? I haven’t been able to tolerate Restasis, Xiidra or Cequa and I’m feeling desperate. Vision is blurred 98% of the time and is only clear for about a min after putting in Systane. I’m a young 58 years old and have tried warm compresses, omega three, drinking lots of water, and clean eating. Nothing is working. If you know of a dry eye center such as yours in the Treasure Coast or near by area of Florida please let me know
I am not aware of the light delivery from LAL contributing to MGD but I will have to look into it. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that would not correct MGD. Blephoroplasty could, in some situations, help with eyelid closure which could aid in stabilizing the tear film or chronic exposure issues.
I’ve done a bit of research (layperson) and have had no luck finding information regarding the light delivery device of the LALs and MGD. I know the MGD started immediately after the second lock in procedure and I can’t help but wonder if it is the cause. I would love to know if you find a correlation. Thank you for your videos. They are very helpful
Yeah they can do that. I have found better success with synthetic ones that last 3-6 months. However there is now a new plug that is a liquid gel that is injected into the drainage tube which then solidifies. It eventually dissolves over time.
I have suffered for years. Doctors in Utah are horrible. I was always dismissed. Only been somewhat treated the last 4 after damage and abrasions already repeatedly occurred. Forward 4 years and a whole lot of pain. Same doc sends me to a clinic for revoew for lipiflow, IPL ect. Why not 4 years ago before so much damage! I am so upset. 😢 I have MGD, ocular rosaecia, inflammation, neuropathic corneal pain, cell damage and current sPK of 3! Nsow to find out today that 20% of oil glads are gone forever in one eye and more than that in the other eye. No oil could be expressed at all from any. If doctors would do their job My glads could have been saved years ago. Why are so many like this! I am so done with the pain and worry and having no life anymore
I have had psoriasis (autoimmune disorder), for over 50 years and if I eat certain toxic foods, I have severe psoriasis outbreaks and swelling around both eyes! I believe it is the psoriasis that causes my particular dry eye problem. I wake up about every two hours every night and have to apply eye drops!
Diabetes causes dry eye. It's horrible! Feels exactly like I have a piece of sand, or, an eyelash in the lower part of my eye(s). Then, I simply have to gently rub my eyes. Doing that, makes my eyes have a very painful, burning sensation. Next comes the worthless 'fake' tears. Those tears have ZERO benefits for my eyes. Fake tears will sometimes make dry eye worse, in my opinion. I try using Syst___ eye drops, preservative free. Now, those drops burn my tear ducts so badly! I need to obtain new drops that won't do that. Anyone have any suggestions?
Are you allergic to corn. Many eye drops contain polysorbate which is made from corn. I can't use most dry eye drops. Ask your eye doctor about drops that don't contain polysorbate.
Fill a small spray container with distilled water. Throughout the day, spray your eyes. (Keep a tissue nearby for patting down on the eyes and wiping your face.) It's what I've been doing for several years. Distilled water is much more calming to my eyes than any eye drops. About "preservative free" eye drops: For most eye drops sold in the USA, unless the drops come in a plastic vial, they are not really preservative free. They contain a preservative that supposedly dissipates on being exposed to air. I had tried numerous brands of such drops in the past, and they all irritated my eyes. These days I just use distilled water, and occasionally eye drops manufactured in Europe that do not have the preservatives problem, e.g. Thealoz Duo, Hylo-Tear, Hycosan Plus, Ivizia.
I have dry eyes too plus I'm allergic to everything so my doctor ordered Vital Tears for me.The best ever. They draw your own blood and from the serum they make eye drops.Never heard of this before but they work wonders for me.Hope that helps.

Hey thanks for another insightful video! I confirmed with A.I that as elevation increases, the air really does get drier which can worsen dry eyes issues! I think those living in high rise buildings should be made aware of this
Oh! I never thought of high rise buildings having drier air towards the top levels! How tall of buildings are we talking about?
@@DoctorEyeHealth Any level. Its not necessarily about the buildings height, but rather the natural decrease in air pressure and humidity the higher you are off the ground. A.I says "taller buildings say, 20-30 stories might be more prone to noticeable differences in air dryness between upper and lower floors". I'm living on just the 12th floor and shortly after moving in got extremely dry eyes unlike ever in my life. Then theres the ventilation systems to make things worse too :(
I wear an eye mask to keep the ceiling fan from drying my eyes out more.
I'm watching on the replay. My doctor said I have dry eye/ blepharitis a few years ago and suggested heated masks. Recently my new eye doctor said I have optical rosacea, and she prescribed Xiidra and daily use of heat masks.
Out of curiosity, does the heat mask make things better or worse?
Since I had cataract surgery I've noticed my eye dry has gotten so much worse. I'm surprised you haven't mention it yet .
Will cataract surgery intensify dry eye symptoms? I'm needing it soon and curious how all the post op drops can effect MGD?
Thanks for sharing!!
Surgery on the eyes, including cataract surgery is know to induce dry eye flair ups. It is often recommended to treat dry eye intensely before cataract surgery to improve the surgical outcome and decrease post op symptoms. Happy to hear you are doing a bit better and being so pro-active!
@@DoctorEyeHealth thanks Doc! I appreciate it.
Would taking showers daily help with dry eyes? Such as the humidity and having the warm water flow over your eyes?
What your take on that
I really don’t want to take antibiotics. if I don’t have to don’t want to end with resistance due to taking too much antibiotics. Thanks much Doc. Appreciated.

The EYE PHONE. 😳

Does low-dose doxycycline (20mg bid) still carry the risk of harming the gut microbiome, even if that dose is considered sub-antimicrobial?
What does sub-antimicrobial mean?
Hi again doc, I was scared because sometimes my eyes so itchy then suddenly rubbing it with pressure then I think about keratoconus ..
I was diagnosed with dry eye but have never been diagnosed with meibomian gland disfunction. I wouldn’t be surprised if I had it. I have so much else that’s wrong with me it would fit right in.
Update: I was diagnosed with MGD but wasn’t informed. A new doctor corrected that.
Me as well. I'm a type 1 diabetic
I suffer everyday chronic dry eyes It's painful and I have blurry vision. I can't get a diagnosis of what it is.

Did you see a dry eye specialist specifically?
@@DoctorEyeHealth Yes a specialist looked at my dry eye problem and I attended the appointment given to me. It was long time ago. I cannot remember what was the reason given. I had also my ear op done twice and nose op done too. At the moment I have a hole in the ear and I refused another op as was told it might or might work. Stop hear noises in my ear constantly. For eye I think same reason it might or not. As I mentioned it was long time ago but I will try and look at my paper work from the hospital. Thank you for your notification. I do watch your eye videos on U Tube most of the times .
Hi Joseph, thank you for all your videos. It has helped me better understand my MGD and also RCE. Can you please let me know what it means that the NovaTears Omega 3 eye drops is antimicrobial? Thanks
A doctor in my community offers PRP (platelet rich plasma) tears, a treatment for helping with dry eyes. I am interesting in hearing people's opinions on whether PRP is more or less helpful than autologous tears for patients who have MGD.
I can’t speak specifically about PRP on MgD, but from other specialists in the area, PRP is being favored over autologous serum
Carnivore diet ... and no more sleep apnea
i agree should be something to add to possible causes.

@@DoctorEyeHealththanks so much for the reply!!
????????? What about Johnson baby shampoo to clean the eyelids during a shower?
Good question. There are some concerns regarding the use of baby shampoo as the ingredients have changed over time and some of the ingredients are now associated with damage to the glands and a disrupted tear film. Many old textbooks in eye care still recommend it but the current research says otherwise.
I have dry eyes but my fav doctor ! Burr constantly accumulates in the corner of my eye. What is the reason?
Burr? Did you mean blur or more like mucous accumulation?
Mucous😅😅😅
hypochlorous acid ?
I have this gland dysfunction too. I get terribly blurred vision. It ruins my day to day life. It's awful. I have had punctual plugs put in which helped for a few weeks and I had a massive change in a positive way though now it's getting worse again 😞 I finally felt normal again but now back to square one. X I have no clue what to do x
Use scleral lens
When choosing use of eye drops treating dry eye, do you need to be cautious about what kind of eye drops you use, if you have glaucoma?
Hey thanks for asking! Most eye doctors will recommend a preservative free eye drop as an artificial tear. There are some publications that support use of preservative free glaucoma medications as well, when a patient is not a candidate for other forms of glaucoma treatment (such as SLT for example).
@@DoctorEyeHealth 🙏
Not heard of MGD! Thank you!
No problem!
What about autoimune diseases like reumatoid arthritis? Or medicine like adalimumab?
Auoimmune disease for sure contributes to ocular inflammation and dry eye disease. I did do a livestream on autoimmune conditions last year if you did not catch that one, ua-cam.com/users/live72x6bF45TwU
??? Can allergies or surgery on the eye like canthoplexy cause worsening of dry eyes???
Good question! Allergies can definitely make dry eyes worse and more likely, as allergens disrupt the tear film and produce more inflammation on the ocular surface, often times allergies seem to multiply dry eye symptoms or trigger a dry eye flair up. Any surgical procedure on the eye can trigger a dry eye event , but canthoplexy, interestingly enough, can also help with dry eye when it helps the tear film stay better on the eye.
Can symptoms manifest as ghosting and starbursts around lights?
Dry eye can cause blur and fluctuating vision, including starbursts and ghosting.
My doc has me on erythromycin. Is that similar to azithromycin?

It definitely contributes to it!
@@DoctorEyeHealth thanks Doctor! Appreciate it.
Hi Doc? Where do u see patients..
Currently, I am at the pinecone vision center in Sartell Minnesota
I’ve had punctal plugs for my dry eyes but they fall out!
Yeah they can do that. I have found better success with synthetic ones that last 3-6 months. However there is now a new plug that is a liquid gel that is injected into the drainage tube which then solidifies. It eventually dissolves over time.
Got any accutane causing dry eye related videos?

Diabetes causes dry eye. It's horrible!
Feels exactly like I have a piece of sand,
or, an eyelash in the lower part of my eye(s).
I have Dry Eye since a Pink Eye infection months ago. 😥 The doctors aren’t helping. Restasis does nothing.
