Hi Staci - once again I find your information and videos SO helpful. I actually bought a set of Flexi Flips a couple of years ago and never even used them. But I have a ball of gorgeous sock yarn, the Flexi Flips, and a fun local knitting group to hang out with, so it's time to jump in and do it! I just downloaded the pattern.

New sub here. I crochet mostly, have knitted scarves in the past. I have tons of pretty sock yarns and tried with 5 dpn and written instructions. That was a no go lol. I recently bought these needles. Saving this video. Thank you so much!
Oh! This is the same as knitting on two circulars, except with less extra cord in your way! My flexi flips just came in and I’m dying to try them.

Thank you for the tip on buying 3 sets of Chiaogoo shorties. I bought one set to try out 9 inch circs which I didn’t like but using them this way might be something I would like. Chiaogoo needles are my go-to needles whatever I am knitting.

I didn't realise I had made a modification to this technique, I thought I was following the Judy method but realise I wrap the top needle from the other side, I.e. between the needles first then wrap over to the back. The advantage of doing it this way means the stitch on that needle is not sitting so you have to knit through the back of the stitch. Love this tutorial!
Deirdre McKenna exactly how I do it, and nearly commented the same thing! I also don’t use a slip knot.
I do the same thing. I've never have to ktbl and my toe looks just fine.

So I'm pretty stubborn, and decided this was going to be my first pair (or at least first sock) ever... doing those KFBs on such teeny yarn and needles soooo makes me feel like I have sausage fingers! So far, I am enjoying the FlexiFlips (got the bamboo ones from my LYS) and using Estelle's Colour Story yarbs... beautiful colour!!! Looking forward to making it further than the toe part without having to frog! :)
I can’t wait to start my next pair of socks. And I’ll do that as soon as I finish the swearer, scarf and hat that are current in progress. 😋

I have the CrazyTrio by addi which I wondered why they are named differently than in the USA, now I know. Thank you, Staci! I've knit one pair using these needles up to the halfway point of the foot where I changed to Magic Loop Method due to the weight of the sock. I'm hoping to learn a trick to knit the entire sock on these needles.

I will definitely give this pattern a try. I think this heel may actually work for my thick foot. I've done short row heels and always give the socks away because I can't get them up and over my heel/ankle area. BTW - It is nice to see that you can laugh at yourself!
Thank you! If you have an issue with wider feet/ankles, it isn't so much the heel you're fighting with, but the gusset. Many short row heels (my patterns included) don't include gusset increases. This pattern does, and should be a better fit for you.

The other video didn’t mention, but are these less likely to get lost? I am sad, I lost my favorite hiya hiya #1. I'm down to 3. I have another set that I get a different tension on so I'm popping the stitches on them and using the hiya hiya to knit with. I'm devating on the don sock set or the flex. I dont do magic loop, so even though I have #1 circulars, I'm not likely to use those for socks. Plus they are long since I got them for a sweater.
I love Flexi flips because of you. I do not like double points. These are easy. Cant you use more and do a sleeve????
Hi Staci....I don’t know if you ever got bamboo flexible double pointed needles, but I just saw the Addis on Amazon. I’ve talked myself into trying out your bulky sleep socks on the XL’s Addi offers in US 9. This video has motivated me to try again. I threw the last pair in the back of my closet and would have burned them if I could have found a match! 🤪

I knit socks for sooooooo many years and always wanted to try to knit them from the toe up but never saw a pattern I feel confortable with... but the way you do it, I am so... I just bought your pattern and will give it a go. Going to town tomorrow and will buy a set... hoping they have the Hiya Hiya as I love very sharp pointed kneedles... or is it the Chiaogoo that are very sharp????? Darn... which one?????. I really need to try these needles. I love making socks but I always feel like I'm choosing between two not great options when I'm deciding between using dpns and long circulars for magic loop. I can't hold the 9 inch to save my life! But these look quite intuitive to use. Definitely going to pick some up and give this pattern a try!
Thank you so much for your clear and simple-to-follow tutorial. I am just trying flexi tips for the first time and have bought your pattern. I have used the magic loop method a lot, but I find that when I come to the end of the stitches on the needle of the flexi tip, I forget it's not attached in the round like the magic loop set up. I then let it go, with the result that the needle falls and lands on my trusty Bulldog who is laying at my feet. He keeps looking at me wondering what on earth keeps hitting him on the head :-D
Thank you for doing a comparison on needle sizes. Some of my socks have big gaps after wearing them and I had considered buying all new needles in 2.5 instead of sticking with my 2.75. But I think the problem lies within my super wide feet and I’ll need to knit myself the men’s size 😂

Staci you do not get ladders when using the magic loop if you keep sliding the sts -usually I slide one or two sts. I do not know if this makes sense. In other words, do not start the rounds on the same place
Question: I have ADHD and can loose track of rows… I can tell when a new round starts on the toe… but I find myself forgetting heather Im on an INCREASE round or a knit all round. How can I visually distinguish between weather I’m on an increase row/round or the knit all round. With small fingerling stitches I can’t quite see which I’m on…. Any suggestions on what to look for …?

Thank you.I just wondered why you were transferring those stitches after the heel decreases I’ve only ever knitted one pair of socks on 5 double points. Can I just leave the stitches as they already are on the needles? I don’t know how to transfer the stitches in the correct order so that the working yarn is at the beginning of the needle the stitches are transferred the right way on these needles. I have the pattern but I needed you to show me exactly how I can transfer the stitches correctly but you didn’t show that bit.

I have started on the sock, but I wonder if I bought the wrong flexiflips. I bought the 2.75 but I got the squared ones and after the fact I see the needles themselves are 5 inches. As I was knitting the beginning part, the toe, I felt like I was having to stop and move the yarn across the needles fairly often. Do you think I need to stop and get the regular shorter needle flexi-flips before proceeding? Thank you, Stacey, I always enjoy your tutorials.
Susan - the longer flexiflips are fine. You can still knit a tiny tube with those, but they also give you the option of knitting something with a bigger diameter, like a sweater sleeve. But yes - the shorter needles will require less "scootching" of stitches from the flexible part to the tip of the needle. You can knit the socks on the longer needles, but it sounds like you might enjoy the shorter ones more.
@@verypinkknits Hello again, Staci! I just received my new flexiflips that have the needle portion of 3-1/2 inches (and I got the bamboo tips). I am finding a noticeable amount of ease for moving the stitches around compared to than the ones I had bought originally that were 5 inches. Much easier on my hands for sure. Question, when working the toe you knit on the back needle. When working the main part of the sock you knit on the front needle. How and when did you make the change? In my mind you are basically changing direction of your knitting.

I was a bit confused as to which needle to knit from (front or back). In your video it looks like you do both so I was wondering how, when you made the change. Maybe I’m just really confused.
Just bought the pattern and did my first ever Judy's Magic cast on and finished the toe so I am soooo happy. Looking at Flexi needles they seem to come in different lengths? Is one length better than the other? Does anyone know?
I'm not sure of all the different lengths available, but if your goal is to knit socks, you can stick with the shorter ones. The longer ones are probably for adult sweater sleeves or cowls.
@@verypinkknits great, thank you. I was gifted a flexi pair from a friend (think they are a cheap version from a chinese site) so they are bigger than I need but I am happy to keep going and just see how I get on. So much easier than double pointed.
Still using DPNs, will wait until the price comes down. I do see an advantage when beginning, always losing a needle if not careful, helps having the stitches ‘hang out’ on the flex portion, could probably use them for cabling too.
Ok... may I ask for another question? I just finished the heel, everything went ok and now I started to knit the leg but even though I really tugged tight my first stitches, I have an "enormous" hole each side... what did I do wrong????
Hmm...without seeing your work, I would say it is likely a tension issue. Sometimes you can pull too tightly and create gaps that way. This style of heel is usually good for "no gaps"...it could also be that the holes look different from the rest of the fabric, but aren't really "enormous"...small gaps will disappear with washing. Lastly, some sock yarns are a bit thinner than others, and the thinner yarn will give the appearance of gaps that will likely disappear with washing.
Sorry to bother you but I saw a video of yours a while back that showed a simplified version of wrap and turn that just clipped a marker on the yarn without an actual wrap. Could you please tell me what video that was?
Love, love, love this pattern! Any suggestions for knitting stripes? I have lots of solid colors and I’d love to do some fun stripes but not sure of the best technique for changing color every few rows without cutting yarn. Thanks.

Thank you for this tutorial I like flexible needles for sock knitting. I am going to purchase a set of hiya hiya steel flyers (these are not the sharps) from a shop on Etsy hopefully by the end of the week. The sharps are not for me and I will let you know how it goes.
Great tutorial! I’ve had these needles sitting in my stash since they came out. Unused! I’m a top down sock knitter...I hope sometime you will provide that version pattern! 😊 I’ve made a pair or two toe up and I’m just not a fan. That fleegle heel looks very tempting though.
I too knitted only from top down for eons but I must admit that this pattern is tempting... so tempting that I bought it... which I very rarely do. So... will give it a try and yes, it is good to just knit to the end of the ball so no leftover. I am finishing the 2 pairs I am knitting right now and then... will try this pattern.
Starfire Horizon Oh ...I understand knitting until the end of the ball with toe up socks. I have made a few pairs of them. I just prefer top down as I never have to guess about the fit. Put them on...see how I like them and then do the toe. Perfection every time! 😊
Yes - but I would say that toe-up are easier to fit. I give exact instructions for when to start the heel to fit your foot/shoe size, and you can easily try the sock on when it is on these flexible dpns.
Stacy... for sure I am trying this pattern but could you ~ if possible ~ make a short video to show how to do the regular heel... how to manage the heel and gusset with the flexibles? Leg and foot and toe OK... but I am a bit confused about how to do the heel and gusset and this other part I always forget the name in English... Thank you soooooo much 💞💞🙏🙏

@@verypinkknits Maybe I was not very clear with my words... English is not my first language... sorry 😔... but what I wanted to know is... I usually knit from top to toe and I knit the traditional reinforced heel stuff where you knit your heel in 3 steps with the rest of the stitches on the other 2 dpn needles... so my question is... is it possible to knit this kind of heel from the toe up? As I can't figure it out as I would have to knit reverse. Maybe it is not the king of heel that could be knitted this way? If yes, could you show us how to do it, please? If not... I presume there is a way to make the heel of your beautiful pattern so it is reinforced in some way??? I hope my words are more aligned this time 😀... thank you

You can knit any sock pattern on these needles. I just chose this toe and heel because they really make use of the flexi-dpns, but any sock pattern will work well.
Could u please do a tutorial of slouchy socks please for a woman size 11 shoe size. Wal-Mart used to sell them. I'm not looking for bed socks n not leg warmers. Thank u

As always, a well organized & presented video tutorial. But I think it's just convinced me to stick with magic loop. FlexiFlips seem the disadvantages of DPNs and magic loop, without meaningful improvement on either method. But who knows? To each his own.

As I've pointed out in my other videos explaining these needles - flexible DPNs solve a lot of problems that people have with the other methods of knitting socks (DPNs, magic loop, short circulars). It is another option, one I'm excited about because I find them really easy to work with.
I like to use correct instead of right. Less confusing.

Hi Staci, does your pattern give instructions of how to adjust if we have an ankles and foot that are not proportional to each other? If I want to have more stitches left for knitting the cuff, do I just stop "eating" the stitches and just knit the hill without decreasing?
I don't recommend altering the numbers of the pattern - sock patterns aren't easy to modify, you essentially have to rewrite the whole pattern! But I have an easy solution for you. If you need one area to be narrower or wider, just change your needle size for that area, knitting the pattern exactly as written. For example - if you have a wider foot and a narrower heel and leg, use 2.75mm needles up to the heel, switch to 2.5mm for the heel, then proceed with the cuff on the same smaller needles.
For the toe increases, would it be more symmetrical to *k1, kfb, k to last 2 sts, kfb, k1?
It is symmetrical as written, what you've suggested is also symmetrical.

I have the Turtlepurl yarn in tickled pink but my toe came out in two colors, not like your one color.
Not important but I wondered if the problem was starting with the wrong side of the ball?

and a tutorial I most definitely needed... Would love to see more patterns using these needles.
That's just how mine happened to work out, I didn't try to get the toe a single color! I just happened to start with the pink yarn (which is a big stripe in this colorway), and that's how it went. I would have been fine with a striped toe. I don't think the end of the ball matters, really - the yarn dyer can start/stop the striping sequence anywhere in the pattern once they reach 100 grams.

Hi Staci, I bought yoyr pattern and the flexiflip needles and I'm using sock yarn trying to knit these socks but I'm getting what looks like latter's on one side of the sock at the toe and on the other side looks like just decorative little holes. Is this normal or can you tell me what I might be doing wrong. I'm trying to follow your video and pulling the bottom needle out to the tube like you did and knitting the top but I must be doing something wrong Thanks for your help appreciate it. Tammy
A little bit of laddering isn't a problem - it will even out once you wash the socks. If you're getting significant laddering it has to do with your tension. Make sure you are really pulling on the first stitch of each needle, since the "drag" from the last stitch on the old needle to the new needle will create extra yarn, and a ladder.

Is there any way that you could revise the pattern for people with small feet? I start out with 56 stiches instead of 64. Thank you!
Revising the stitch count in a sock pattern isn't a simple thing, you pretty much have to start over from scratch and rewrite the pattern. These socks are made to fit average width foots, any shoe size. If you have a narrow foot, I recommend using a smaller needle size and knitting the pattern as written.

I just bought your pattern and can't wait to try them. I will need to get a set of needles, I just can't make up my mind to either the Addi or the HiyaHiya. I'm wondering if your pattern would work for using the magic loop? I'm finishing my socks doing 2 at one time, it is the first time doing 2 at one time. I have alway preferred HH over Addi, I just don't like the smell of Addis
I am using Hiya Hiya flyers. I am live knitting with them. U am having a problem. Sometime I end up with the knitted stitch moved over to the right hand needle and not dropping the stitch ending up with two stitches on the right needle. Can you give me any pointers
I don't think that has anything to do with the needles, just a hand movement issue. I recommend slowing down, making sure you drop that other loop each stitch, and eventually the correct way will become muscle memory, and you won't have a problem with it anymore.
question on this sock patttern: I am using CO of 60 sts. i am at point of gusset after knitting foot to 2.5 in. from heel. I am apprehensive about being pretty high on foot and almost to back of heel . It doesn't seem to be right to me but just wanted to know what you think about it. I have added only 7 stitched to gusset . should I rip back down foot and start gusset over further down foot or change gusset stitch count? So confused LOL :)
Dreda - sorry you're having trouble. I highly, highly recommend following the written pattern. "Winging it" isn't a good way to knit socks, unless you're really experienced with designing socks or modifying patterns. I have some sock tubes that i need to put afterthought heels in, would your method from the pattern work ok doing this?
Not really, not this pattern. This pattern includes a gusset, which isn't a part of socks that use an afterthought heel.
Thanks for the instruction for flexible needles, Staci. As I watched your technique for toe increases, it reminded me of another instructor who prefers a lifted increase rather than the KFB. What is your opinion of one over the other for this purpose? Thanks!
I never use kfb and have used both lifted and yo increases. Just personal preference but of those two, the lifted is my favourite, I like that its a bit tighter for socks but would like to understand the merits of kfb! Will be watching out for Stacis reply
I use kfb in this pattern because it is much easier to work, and I like the decorative line it makes on the toe. If you prefer another one-stitch increase, it can be easily substituted for the kfbs in the pattern.

Hello dear you... I have a question: I just started the sock... LOVE this cast on and I am now just before the heel start... but... how can I put it... I read the pattern and listen to the video... now, maybe I missed something but... I have very small child-like feet and the # of stitches I cast on for my sock is, with socks yarn, 60 stitches... but with your pattern it is 64 sitches... so I will finish it (maybe an xmass gift for my best friend 😊... if I stop the toe increase at 60 stitches... is this will unbalance something re the heel? Will I have to adjust something or... it will be the same???? Thank you 🌹
Yes - I don't recommend altering the cast-on number, that changes the whole rest of the pattern! If you are after a slightly narrower sock, I suggest using a smaller needle size and following the pattern as written. That will get you a narrower sock.

Are these flexible DPNs too small for hats?
They might be long enough for a kid or baby hat, but they are too short for an adult hat, yes.
Are there any physical stores with flexible dpns in stock?
Yes - you can call your local yarn shops. Any store that carries Addi needles will likely carry these.
Hi...Does it make a difference if you are a Continental knitter? I seem to be too tight and knitting after the CO seems to be a problem for me...Any thoughts.
No difference if you are a Continental knitter...it doesn't matter which hand you use to hold the working yarn. If you are finding that you're knitting is too tight, you will likely need to use a larger needle size to match the gauge (stitches per inch) in the pattern. Oh goodness. I was following along just fine on the Flexiflips until I got to decreasing the gussets, and making that V formation. I noticed that I was purling on the knit side and knitting on the purl side, and somehow my heel ended up on the outside of the ankle area! I removed my needles and will start over, but this time with a circular and magic loop method. So much wasted time and effort. 😢

My advice here - always look at your work. Make sure you're knitting on the knit side, and that your working yarn is coming from the right needle when you're working in-the-round.
If I wanna reinforce the toes and heels, where/how do I do that with these socks since the heel is different?
Just carry your extra yarn in the heel section of the pattern - you'll still get reinforcement.

Yes, totally doable. You can follow the pattern pretty easily with magic loop, with very few modifications.

Hi Staci, I was going to order these needles and wanted to know what is the largest size needles you would use with sock yarn and worsted weight yarn? I have a hard time seeing and working with tiny needles and was needing your advice. I have the Addi needle set for circular needles but the smallest I have in the set is a size 4, would these work with sock yarn or are they to big to use? Thank you so much
Tammy - I recommend finding a pattern you want to knit and then purchasing the needle size in the pattern. Or finding a yarn you want to use, and getting the needle size on the yarn label. I can give you a needle size for worsted weight yarn, but the term "worsted" is used very liberally, and not all worsteds are the same weight. That said, I don't know the reason you are asking this question, but I will answer it knowing very little. (This bothers me as a knitting teacher!) Size 8 US is the largest needle size I would use with worsted if I want to create a fabric that is not lacy.
