    I wanted to pop in and let you know I’ve been really enjoying your channel! The things you do and books/curriculum you choose really parallel what we are doing as well, and there were times I felt a bit insecure about my style but WOW you are doing a great job and helped me to have much more confidence in how we do things too. Love your inclusion of the Muhammad Ali poetry, that is something I will include too, great idea. I also have a really amazing young writer, also in 5th. Last year we had a big brown bag of little slips of paper with creative writing prompts from a variety of sources and each day she would pick one prompt out and write as long as she wanted. Her notebook from 4th is such a treasure to me now.

      Wow, what a compliment -- to have given you confidence. Thanks! I was actually a little nervous about how my channel would be perceived. It's a bit less mainstream... and homeschool itself is already a minority. I'm a minority within a minority but I have a feeling there are thousands of moms who want to homeschool in even less of a mainstream way than what standard homeschool curriculum provides. So... here we are :) Are you going to do more structured writing with your daughter? And if so, when? What do you think you will use?

      @@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy We do sort of what you do in terms of having a core and then extra stuff, our "core" is MUS, reading and then writing instead of French. For writing we do the creative writing portion, and then I follow The Writing Revolution, they recommend incorporating writing into each other activity you do, which boosts understanding of writing and also the other subject (like History). Then we have been following Writing Matters for grammar, and for spelling we do Sequential Spelling online program. We always have a "fun" book we read and then we do historical reading and then I read them books that are higher level aloud. However, my 5th grader is a prolific "natural" reader/writer/speller and while this works for her, it isn't working as well for my 7th grader who really needs more explicit instruction as she has dyslexia. I think for her this year i'm going to continue the above, but then add in IEW for writing, Fix It for grammar, and EIW literature to help her get that explicit instruction in those areas. It might be that I am just second guessing myself, not sure...but we will try it out and see how it works for her!

      @@ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy also wanted to add. I definitely resonate with the eclectic style! The other thing I notice and really enjoy is that you might be one of the first parents i've found where I get the impression that one reason you have homeschooled is to give your child MORE education/understanding/exposure than private/public school would have. That is a major reason I do this as well, but haven't found that reason "in the wild" per se. I feel like we have such a limited window of time where their brains are SO open to learning, and so little time before they are grown, I want them to get all those experiences and exposures they want to.

      18 months ago, I wouldn't have understood your paragraph at all. Now, I totally get it. Makes absolute sense. I have never looked into EIW literature. I stumbled upon MCT and really liked the way they view education: as an exploration to be done by the child with the parent off to the side. So I got their "Alice, Peter and Mole" trilogy Town Level and showed it to Morgan. She wants to read all three and chose Peter Pan to start. They use a four level approach to the books 1)Preparing 2) Reading 3) Creative thinking 4) Writing. So we will see how that goes. I will have to look into EIW lit.

    • @ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy
      @ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy  5 місяців тому

      Yeah, totally with you. I'm dumping it on my kid! I don't actually care that she can remember it all. I think, for instance, when she gets to high school and should read Dracula again, she will say, "Oh, yeah! I forgot most of that. Should be a fun read." And she wont be intimidated by stuff because she at least remembers we already did it together and that it had been fun. But this morning in the car, she used the word "catatonic" on me very naturally in a sentence. So something is rubbing off.

    Just starting homeschooling this coming school year (starting in July) for the 1st time. I’m piece milling as well. 🙏🏻 it all goes & is enough however…don’t have it all nailed down even yet. 😳 so I was relieved to hear you say it’s ok. Thanks for the encouragement!

      Oh gosh, you are welcome! In fact, when school started for us, I really only had Morgan's three core subjects that I cared to start. And our morning routine was slowly built over a few weeks. The other stuff fell in around the main things. You may want to think about starting in succession. Begin with the stuff you feel is an important staple and then add things in as you all get used to the flow. That way, you can move things around a bit before a routine solidifies. I asked Morgan a LOT how she felt about school and the schedule. She essentially was the one who created her morning routine and decided when she would read. Giving her real choices got her full buy in on everything else. Now we work as a team. Have fun!!!

    Thanks for sharing. Are you going to read the literature (Emma, 20,000 leagues under the sea, etc.) out loud or use audiobooks/audible for the reads?

    • @ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy
      @ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy  10 місяців тому +1

      I'd like to read 20,000 Leagues aloud myself. I'm on the fece with Emma. It will depend on if the reader is a female with an English accent who can sound better than me! It is preferred if I do the reading because we can stop and interject things along the way easier than pausing an audio read. It's more interactive that way.

    We are definitely eclectic and literature based. I have found a ton more Homeschoolers similar to us in the Secular communities but I think on youtube this is a new space for that content, and a void you are filling in this area, and it is much appreciated!!!!

      Thank you for your comment! I think because the history behind the revival of homeschool in the US is heavily embedded in Christian beliefs, they have the lead on everyone. Homeschool is a thing here but I am pretty sure I am the only mom who isn't focused quite heavily on Christianity or that being a reason for why we homeschool. We are an extreme minority in a field of education that is already an extreme minority. Like one plankton in an ocean 😂 So glad you found my channel!

    Thanks for your video! I also just started homeschooling my 4th grade daughter this year and we love literature! I also read Know and Tell and we have incorporated oral narration in and I love it.

      I feel like I am the last person to have known about 'Know & Tell'! It is such a helpful book. I already have it underlined, dog-eared, annotated and covered in sticky notes. The book, 'Make it Stick' pairs really well with it. I'm so glad you liked the video -- thanks for your comment!

      In full transparency I just discovered it maybe three weeks ago! I read it in 2 days and also have it highlighted and flagged everywhere! I plan to add written narration next year in 5th grade. And thank you for your book recommendation, I plan on getting all you mentioned in your video!

    I finished FLL 4 with my daughter this past year and began Fix It Nose Tree. I feel like Fix It has done a good job in filling in the gaps of application that we were missing with FLL. My question is: have you always used both FLL and Fix it in tandem? Do you do it on the same day? Does it become overwhelming? I am intrigued and may try to implement both since Well Trained Mind is such a strong program.

    • @ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy
      @ThePattersonHomeschoolAcademy  10 місяців тому

      We didn't intend to use both but we did start with both because I couldn't decide which to choose. Everyone raved about Fix It! and only a few people used TWTM FLL, but I wanted to diagram sentences. So we meant to try both at the same time and see which one stuck. Then we realised we COULD do both. Morgan does her one sentence a day with Fix It! in her morning routine Mon-Thurs by herself. She checks her own work with the instructor manual if she needs. And then we do TWTM together in the afternoons Mon-Wed. This has made her rather strong and confident in grammar. They play off each other well and one can easily be done by the child. We plan on sticking with both programs but slowing down to twice a week with TWTM purple book.

    I am glad you use the Well-Trained Mind grammar books.No one talks about it and I think that it's an excellent program. We just started FLL level 3 and we love it.

      It's nice to see a fellow TWTM grammar user. There are some good flip-throughs on UA-cam but not a lot of recent ones. It seems like it's a well-known curriculum but mainly for history. I think a lot of people may shy away from the grammar because of the diagramming.

    Have you heard of the literary life podcast? You may really love it. It’s my absolute favorite podcast…and they have classes too for adults and kids ❤
    If you like Know and Tell, You may like it because Karen Glass has been a guest on some episodes.

      I just started following it when I read this. I’m grocery shopping alone and have a nice long drive back to the farm so I’m going to listen to it! I’m in the middle of The Master & Margarita as well as Uncle Tom’s Cabin and I need breaks from both for different reasons, so thanks!
