2014 Ford F150 Subwoofer Relocation Fail

- Not all of our ideas work, and this is no exception. We tried to relocate the subwoofer in our 2014 Raptor from under the seat to behind the seat. while we got it to work, it was a compromise and the sound quality or use is impacted.

I thought about doing something similar but never got around to it. Thank you for doing the hard part
Your welcome. 🤣
5:42 “I don’t speak Spanish “ 🤣🤣🤣.
🤣🤣👍
You can potentially put some poly fill inside the enclosure to slow down the air movement and give the impression of a larger cabinet. It might help the sub sound better/lower. I think you should build your own custom fitting enclosure out of fiberglass. It would make a cool project to video. You could also add additional areas for tools etc on the other side.
I’ve done the poly fill before with the other stock sub. And makes it punch a little more but does not increase the volume.
I’ve played with fiberglass before. Total mess and not worth it to me. I may try making something out of wood. Or just go full aftermarket sub
Possibly get two 6x9 woofers and build some small boxes for them so they sit behind the seat on the floor, then add a 200-watt amp for them.
Possibly, but not worth it. You won’t get the same bass response and space is very, very tight. We ended up going extreme if you want to check out that video. We may have overdid it.
Ethan was cracking me up this whole video 😂
🤣🤣 he was on point for this video
I've always wondered if there was a solution to get that space back. Thank you for the video.
It’s super tight back there so options are limited. Got a few more ideas we may try later
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I may give it a try once I get around to replacing the sync 2 unit with a sync 3 or something else. I really want to have Android Auto in my truck.
Did y’all talk to Noah at The Car Stereo company. He’s a NorCal guy, but he’s had his Gen1 around 10 years. He’s legit guy. Thanks for putting this video out. I want that floor space back bad enough I am almost willing to forgo the bass.
That’s my current debate
Awesome Video! I bet this is not possible for our Gen1 Raptor with the extended cab! I do dislike that they switched to the B&O Sound system in the new raptors but oh well! Anyways awesome video!
Actually not sure. It might, but I don’t know how much space you have.
Man Helio you guys read my mind that box is so awkward I like your solution.
Gen 2 sub would be great to to retain factory look.
It’s been bothering be for a while, found a used 2020 sun for $25 so it was worth the experiment. I think now we know we need an amp and aftermarket sub, but I think the stock 2020 enclosure could work
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I looked them up on eBay they are reasonably price
Yeah. Average is $75-$100
Yeah ive looked into doing this for the space and have come up with nothing outside of a full custom setup but im just not that into it like i used to be lol, it sounds decent as is and ill deal with the small loss of space
Your solution worked pretty well with a little sacrifice to sound but now you have the space you wanted 👍🏻
Yeah, but not sure if it’s worth it right now. The lack of bass is starting to annoy me. So I need to decide if I want to invest more into it.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad right thats the hard part
Its been awhile since ive done major audio stuff but if I recall correctly you can add poly fiber stuffing to fool the sub to thinking the box is bigger which adds more boom. I forget the ratio per square ft. Maybe something to try before going big 😆
Yeah, I did that with the stock Gen1 sub. Problem here is power output. B&O sub already sounds over driven and it barely hits. It could be different frequencies are being sent to it and it may need a power amp to make it sound better. Not sure, but at that point an aftermarket amp and sub would sound so much better
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad ahh gotcha, yeah the ohms may be off or like you said needs the amp.
Im about to try out the poly fill on the stock sub just to see of it helps any. Id rather get more off roady goodies over a sub setup now lol.
I’ve done it and it works for sure.
Do you still have a link to the box you used? i’m thinking moving the eight back there and i don’t if i can’t lift up the seat because i plan on using the extra space to put dual 12’s. thanks
I don’t. The box was a spare throwaway box from a local shop. But it did not work. Would could not flip the seat up.
And even if you lift the seat, you can only do shallow subs that Al’s compromise the sound that comes from them.
We should have done a sound comparison yesterday. I switched out my door speakers and tweeters to Infinity Kappas. Mids and highs sound way better. Stock sub for now, but i want to switch it out and add insulation in the housing.
Oh man. I so want to upgrade all the speakers. But cost is high. Maybe some Memphis or JL all around.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad im thinking about doing the sync 3 upgrade. Same screen, just the internals are upgraded to newer tech. Ive heard good things.
Me too. But if I go wild with the sound system, it may be worth to just bypass the whole stock system with something that will sound better. Soo many choices and not enough money and time
😬😬😬😬 ... Labor looked like $500 🤑 plus parts ...
Lots of blood sweat & tears .... went into that ...
I also see the lime green represented 👌🏾👌🏾👌🏾
Lol, this is one of those DIY projects for sure. Otherwise it’s too expensive and better to go aftermarket
I wish we could update our sync on the gen 1 I mean it does the job jus wish it was updated or a way to go aftermarket
There are kits to update to the latest version of sync that was in the Gen2 raptors. There is also lynkwell systems that put a large Tesla like display in the middle. May go to one or the other later. But I am worried about all the bugs with the large screen systems based on android
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I feel the same way about the Tesla Screen option. Seems super cool and I like that you still retain all (almost all?) Of the functionality and perhaps gain some like front camera usage while not in 4lo etc. I just don't want to spend 8 hours and a lot of cash to have the screen fail in 3 months when it is out of warranty. I'm also looking into some aftermarket sub options and the powered "under seat" type boxes seem like a decent option. Some of them are about 3.5 in tall and I think might work back there. I'd love to put some sort of foam behind the seat and close it up so it leaves an impression and gives me the exact dimensions available. I don't know if anyone knows of a product that would achieve that, but that would make it a lot easier to make a custom enclosure or find some that would fit without testing.
That’s actually not a bad idea. They make that expanding foam product for packing. But I bet any expanding foam sprayed inside a bag could work.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad if u do ever go that route bro make us a video im watching everyone of them ur the raptor guru brotha
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad That's exactly what I'm thinking of, that packing foam really takes shape well and collapses easily. I might have to try an experiment with some spray foam, good idea! Maybe a trash bag would work.
Doesn’t kicker make a self powered fitted sub for these trucks,?
They do BUT, it’s expensive and it fits in the same location. I also don’t think they make it anymore.
Kicker also makes a Gen2 rear seat option as well but price is ridiculously high too
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad that sucks if they don’t make it anymore. I was looking forward to buying it.
Check to see if anyone has it in stock. The Gen1 kit I think maybe 5 start tuning might of had one but it was pricey
Add Polyfil to the sub enclosure for better sound, i promise you!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve done it, and it’s not enough for me.
Why didn't you put it under the front passenger seat?
Don’t fit. Heater vents and all the cabling get in the way.
I have a 2019 B&O Lariat and it sounds like crap... I think I should also rip out the sub/box and tap the amp for more of a knock. Also the stock radio limits the amount of bass being sent to the speakers. Older is better. ;)
I had a 2020 with B&O and it sounded bad. I much preferred the Sony system in the 2017.
If I remember right, kicker I think makes an upgraded kit with sub and amp that works with the stock connections and replaces it all at the stock location for better sound. Pretty pricey though but a more stealth option.
There is a company that sells seat riser brackets. Probably solve the problem. Lmi seat lift.
Will have to look into them. Could definitely use more space back there
Just found them and I’m definitely doing this. Thanks for the recommendation
The b and O system in my 21 350 sounds worse than the stock Sony in my 16 350. I want to upgrade but I already spend 80k on the damn thing
I hear you. Had the same problem when I got my 20 raptor. That thing sounded so bad compared to the Sony system in my 17
Could you fabricate it so that it is actually in the middle seat facing down towards the floor? Nobody sits in the middle seat anyways so who cares how stiff that seat may become if you hollowed out the springs and foam to make room for the sub box.
That’s actually not a bad idea. May have to try it out and build a custom box that is secured to the seat and figure it out.
Fail to you but still interesting video for me 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Only a fail because it don’t sound good. I think it could work if we do an amp and a aftermarket sub.
Con huevos carbón 🤣🤣🤣
🤷♂️🤷♂️ got to motivate him somehow
The Gen. 1 trucks had Sony sound, it sounded decent, the Gen. 2 trucks had the B & O, in my opinion it was a step down in sound and bass.
2017s and mid 2018s had Sony. And it sounded great. I loved it in my 17. The BO never sounded good to me. You have to really turn the volume up to get any decent noise and it is awful
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I had a end of year 2018, with the B & O, I found out if you put 70% of your sound to the rear speakers and turn it up loud, that’s the best bass you can get out of it. I liked your video, ingenuity! 👍
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad They're not even Sony.
If you look at the speakers they're Sony "by ford"
The factory system is weak. At least it does not do Tool or Rage Against the Machine any justice, no justice.
Totally agree. Subs are tuned for edm, and not for rock and no option to change it and agree, most rock songs sound like crap
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I didn't even know that was a sub until I saw this video. I thought it wasn an amp!
Apparently there are some Kicker 6x8s out that completely changes the sound. Just the speakers.
If I go that route, I think I’ll do a whole separate amp and wiring to get the mounts out of the speakers.
I don’t know if your familiar with Ben Hardy but if you want to know what a lime green Raptor looks like check out his Chanel
Oh I’ve seen his channel. I’ll never go full lime green. Way too loud and it don’t looks good IMO.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Come on "Lime Green!"
🤣🤣 there is such a think as too much of a good thing
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad Yah thats not exactly the color i would go for either I like bright colors but not colors that would melt my retina . i think that is why he wraps it in vinyl its cheaper than paint and it protects the paint from scratches. but you probably already know that.
Take it to 5 star they will fix it.
How so? Please elaborate.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad I believe they could they seem to be able to do it all and they are very good at what they do.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad or just get rid of back seat then you'll have plenty of room.
Ok man I’m confused. What can they fix?
This is a video about a failed subwoofer relocation.
@@KeepItDirtyOffRoad take the back seat out give u plenty of room it's not that had to figure out no need for confusion
Love your channel but you guys are half-ass with your installs. Somewhere, in every video, has ‘its not ideal” or “its not perfect” in it. Seems like you just want to be done with the install and throw attention to detail out the window. Take your time, boys, and do it right.
🤣🤣🤣 we had already spend hours on it man. At some point you have to just make it work with what you got. Specially when you know it’s not permanent, this will get replaced so it won’t matter
