If I was a king or noble back during the medieval era, I would have these little buggers raised and mass produced. Hell if they were bigger like dog size, imagine giving them backpacks and having them be little messengers ;3
I have two called wiggle and pop, their still chicks but their intelligence has surprised me for such young birds, their super affectionate and social , im sold, Quail are the only pet I'd have now.
Had a white queil for almost 5 years He had a personality! he was shy every time my mom or my sister would hold him he would look away the entire time until they put him down Not with me tho he was always chill when I held him, he would sleep or just wait for me to prade him around the house, he would usually start doing those moves they do when they're taking a dirt bath when I covered his head with my hand I miss him, he died in my arms at his last second he looked at me before closing his eyes, I didn't buy anymore queils after that But they're great bird especially if you want to cuddle with them a lot, they're all mostly super chill especially the female ones
What a beautiful boy! So questions: What do they eat? Is this as big as they get, how old is he? How long do they live? Also have you had him since he was a chick? Thanks.
Sadly Widget is no longer with us, he had to be put to sleep a couple of years ago due go health complications. He lived to about 3 years old. The average lifespan of a button quail is 3-4 years, although I had another male who lived to 7 years. This is their full size. Widget was a few months old when I adopted him, and so was fully mature. Button quails need a high protein feed such as chick starter crumb, as well as fresh greens daily. They also appreciate some seeds and mealworms. I hope this helps. :)
The only way to get a tame button quail is to hatch and hand-rear a single chick. This is the only reason Widget is the way he is. It is normal behaviour for button quail to be fearful of being picked up or touched - my other three quails are all this way. As your quail becomes more familiar with you over time, he/she will likely become brave enough to take food from your hand, but that's about as much interaction as you can expect from these crazy little guys. I hope you can still love your quail as a 'hands-off' pet!
I purchased a pair they are very cute to watch. They sit next to each other all the time. I was very surprised because the one they told me that was female was making lots of noise. Singing maybe or calling. Maybe it's male? But then I thought 2 male would fight I'm very confused. I got mine from a pet store. They seem to be very very young. Their size and feathers seem like it's still getting colored up. I also bought 2 Japanese quail hen those guys seem already tame they are outdoor, I can touch and give them food. I been keeping my button quail indoor I don't think they can handle the cold? I'm very new to them.
Hand tame them by holding them by putting them in a small place like a bowl or a large cup then hold them hold for atleast few hours if it doesnt work the first time keep on doing it every day
My quails are fairly tame. The trick is to find out what there favourite food is (my quails love boiled egg and corn) and gradually coax them into eating out of your hand. Although this might not work well for other people as I've interacted with the little ones since my quail (Dora) hatched them out. I also find that one of my male quails (Arthur) is very tame as I have saved his life multiple times after the other quails were being mean to him. He knows that I only want to help. I hope this helps (probs doesn't lol)
You have to hatch them yourself (ideally just one or two) and handle them regularly. Or get really lucky and find a tame adult for sale, like I did with Widget!
I'm getting 2 in a week. They're a bit older on the age scale I think, and the owner really wanted to be rid of them. Im glad we're giving them a home :)
I didn't, but the guy I adopted him from did. Widget was hand raised as a single chick. I raised a bunch of chicks by hand but once they reached adulthood they became scared of people like most button quails are. So I think the key to a hand-tame quail is to hatch a single egg and basically be the chick's mother 24/7.
3 years for the females, 5 years for the males. This is the average life expectancy, but there have been cases of button quails living to be 10 years old!
Curious Creatures I have a male bobwhite who is 6 yrs old & my friend had one that lived to be 9. Glad to hear they can live until 10 & who knows, maybe longer! Keeping them inside like parakeets is how to do it. My male has 3 females & they live in a big multi-level parrot cage.
They have a normal life span of only 2-3 years *ONLY* when living out in the wild. Mostly because of severe weather conditions, low food/water supply sometimes & predators. When raised as *DOMESTIC* pets inside (either in a home or coop/hutch/barn) and always protected and with plenty of fresh food & water always available and optimum temps. constantly regulated & provided for them...... they can have a normal life span of up to 8-15+ years. (Barring no illness, disease or accidents, of course).
Widget is a perfect name for this rotund birb c:
Quails are what I've been missing all my life.

Darkkath no he was around 1 month btw should I buy him someone friends
Lucky Gamer Girl You should usually have a dozen for button quail, I own over 300 button quail and 700 Coturnix, I fill each hutch with 150.

How long do they live if they are properly cared for?
They can live for 5 years or more with proper care. The average is 3-4 years. My other male quail lived to 8 years old!
What a beautiful boy! So questions: What do they eat? Is this as big as they get, how old is he? How long do they live? Also have you had him since he was a chick? Thanks.

Big kiwi time
how long did it take for him to become tame? I have 3
+Kizera He was already tame when I adopted him. Apparently he was the only survivor from a clutch of chicks and so was raised on his own by hand.
+Curious Creatures (Pickle) awww you're lucky. and he's lucky to have you
+Kizera Thank you. :)
facts I always thought button quail were shy, this was genuinely a surprise to me seeing a button quail this tame.
My Houdini just passed away today she was 4 years old and tame and Now I’m so sad.
I'm so sorry. 😢 I miss Widget every day too. These little birds have a big place in our hearts x
It's a White Potat
Cute!
how can I tame mine. I think it's scared I just got mine. I'm worried if I keep sticking my hand in I'll make it hate me.

they are usualy fidgety but they cab be tame so can every animal if raised correctly

Hi
Did u raise him from a day old chick? do I need to have a few just for company?

Sir, does button quail poop alot?
Yes, they do poop a lot! 😅 It's something like every 20 minutes. The smaller the bird, the more frequent the poop!
