From the end of the Brexit transition period on 31 December 2020, the EU GDPR will be superseded by the UK GDPR in the United Kingdom. There is little material difference between what the two laws require UK data controllers and processors to do, but if your organisation processes EU residents’ personal data, you will need to make some changes to the way you operate.

Why can the police keep my details and use them to contact me regarding a totally separate issue, neither of which involved me being investigated for anything? Or is this one of those do as I say, not as I do legislations?

Pretty much all companies. So for example, if you have any employees, chances are that you also have data stored somewhere about them. So its not just about your costumer's data.
