    I the crown of the driveway was too high. So I graded it to lower the crown. I drive a little car back to forth to work. And the bottom of the car would hit the driveway in spots. I think that's a good indicator that the crown was too high and needed lowered.

      The scarifiers are there for a reason.
      There's so much material below, utilize it.

      If the crown was so high you had to take all the surface rock off, then your base rock was crowned too high too. I’m not sure how best to fix that, but I guess quite a bit of new rock. Maybe (but maybe not!) you could move base rock outwards without making that layer too thin. Depends on what the soil underneath was shaped like. You might be able to dig down in a couple places to check that. If you can’t take it down any more, then you’ll need an inch or maybe two of the surface rock to fix from above. 440 yards by 5 yards wide by 1/18 (for 2”) is still 122 cubic yards of gravel. That’s 6 triaxial loads I think. Big project. Somebody please check my math here.

      crown was to high due to wheel tracks compacting on each side...one cure is what you did grade crown into wheel track area....other is to add material to wheel track area....a gentle crown is best want water to get off drive but as slow as possible so it doesnt take any material with it ...

    • @johnsadler8637
      @johnsadler8637 3 роки тому

      @@garynelson4749 In our driveway, the wheel track went down from compaction and outward migration of rocks displaced and rattling downslope. That was why the first move was to pull that displaced rock back in. Our drive was much narrower than Evan’s though - it’s limited to one-way traffic.

    Once you use the land plane enough you will learn how to gradually lift it as you’re moving to feather out the material it’s carrying and not leave any piles. Also, you’ll figure out when/how to use it in Reverse to carry grade and spread material more quickly and accurately, such as in that dumpster area. They’re nice attachments, though, and well worth the money.

    Good morning! From someone who has only ever used a plain scraper blade on a driveway, I am envious! Those things do a really nice finishing job and are fairly easy to use. I have two observations from my experience and one from observing a UA-camr who is a fantastic operator of such equipment. First, my dad told me once that potholes don’t go away by filling them - they have to be cut down below their depth a little and the whole thickness of gravel re-establish. We had a quarter mile drive like you do, and the road past us is now paved but when I was born, it was a 7-mile gravel county road. Dad said the county guys who ran their graders told him that trick about the potholes. Those scarifiers could be useful to cut them out but you’d have to be careful not to get into the base rock. Second, Dad said the gravel on our drive migrated out down the slope from the crown, and we usually had to angle the blade to bring it back to the center to maintain the crown. Most of the time people running land planes run outside in on the right to do this. I couldn’t see your crown vs flat situation, but it does look like you moved the smaller aggregate off the center to dig up the 3” base rock. If you can get back on it sometime it’s not frozen, now that the grass is dead, try running your right side on the outside and see if the smaller rock can be brought back in. Third, it appears the cutter blades are set pretty aggressive and you may want to get a 1/8” flat strap between the runners and the sides to soften it a bit. Probably want a season of experience this way before committing much effort toward that though. If you carry a little more weight on your lift arms it might be ok as is. Mike Morgan of Outdoors with the Morgans has done comparisons of scrapers vs box blades vs land planes. I think he has a Land Pride model. You could reach out to him and ask how deep his cutters are below the runners. I know his can run in reverse and cut - it has cutter bars going both ways. He finds a flat spot and works in reverse so the tractor doesn’t go up and down and propagate that undulation to the implement (like what happened to you when your wheels went from the gravel pad to the yard at the dumpster pad).
    Anyway, the road looks a lot better. Nice and smooth, nice and wide. Good to start the winter in good shape!

    I have a 38HP tractor that pulls a 5' box blade fully loaded. I usually run it slow with auto idle and it rarely might bog down if the box it totally full, but all I have to do is idle up and it pulls.... Rarely need to take it off auto idle. A land plane is easier to pull than a full box blade. I touch up the road a couple times a year. I love how the road looks new again after a few passes. Good old crusher run packs nice.

    When it rains/snow melts this next spring and runs across frozen ground, take pictures. Then you can see where you need to do any ditching or driveway crown. A couple of dirt roads near me that get huge amounts of traffic (but are in the far corner of the county so they don't get looked at enough) quickly deteriorate due to sections of poor crown or no ditch available so the water puddles on the road. Drip line of some trees keep the road soft and easy for pot holes to appear. Some of those holes have been as big as a truck motor.

    The way I did this on my farm basically started out exactly the same as what you did initially with the 4 passes, but then I rolled it flat, added a new layer of gravel, and set the skids equal with the blades to grade it. Next step after that was I ordered construction sand (same stuff you'd use for making concrete) and spread that to about a 1 inch layer, then graded again. Finally I did one last pass with the roller, which packed all the sand and gravel down together. It's been about 10 years now and I've only ever had to rake it over occasionally to get it looking "clean" again. I'm just now considering topping it off with new stuff.
    One thing I did right at the beginning that I'm really glad I did, is dig herringbone trenches and side ditches along the entire length of the drive, and then backfill them with large aggregate. In 10 years I've never had a single pothole, and I credit the herringbone for that. At the time I was doing it several people told me I was going overkill with it, now at least one of those guys has dug up their own drive to do the same thing after seeing the benefits. It's not necessary everywhere but damn every time I visit a friends farm and go bouncing down their drive I'm so glad I don't have to deal with that every day, I get sore enough as it is from the fields!

    • @flash1259
      @flash1259 3 роки тому

      I was watching him using the land plane with the blades low like they are thinking if they wasn't so low there wouldn't be such a pile to drag around. You said you use yours flush. Does that keep the land plane from filling up so much or does it make a difference? I've got a driveway around 250' long overall and over 1/4 mile of gravel road I want to use one on. I plan on getting one for my Kubota 3901. If I get the dual attachment one I can also use it on my Bobcat T650 or my New Holland 675E.

    • @bulletz9280
      @bulletz9280 2 роки тому

      @@flash1259 when it's just the first layer it helps to have it set low like that to get it evenly distributed. If you have the skids set flush it will ride over the piles somewhat rather than redistributing them. It might seem like you're dragging a lot of material but it's a necessary step. To be honest with you, I could probably have done the same exact thing using a rake, wheelbarrow, and shovel, but it would've taken me a lot longer and obviously would not have done my back any favours!

    • @flash1259
      @flash1259 2 роки тому

      @@bulletz9280 I'm planning on getting a box blade for my skid steer and a land plane for my tractor. I just haven't done it yet. I have to drive close to 300 miles round trip to get them. That's really not far I just haven't done it yet. I'm going to try the land plane on the gravel road that goes by my house. It'll be approx 1/4 mile plus my driveway which is less than 200'. I'm sure I'll try it a few different ways to see which way works the best.

    Looks good. That land plane should come in handy all around the farm. Can the land plane be used to level and move soil around out in your fields? That metal packing could be repurposed with your welding equipment.

      It will likely only move soil around if it is really dry, smallish lumps and loose otherwise it will simply plug up inside the frame in my opinion.

      I thought about welding material, also! I'm sure that he will keep it and make something!

    I have a 60" Land Plane that I pull with my 25 hp tractor. Definitely has to be in 4wd, or it spins. I find that, for the best finish, drive the tractor in reverse to really level out humps in the driveway. So, I'll pull 3-4 passes forward, and finish pushing in reverse. Then I'll back drag the FEL in float mode with a very slight angle down to really smooth it out.

    I'm happy for you that you got that awesome piece of machinery. It's always so good to get another video from you. In regards to the weeds growing on the driveway, there is an all natural way to kill them. I watched a video from a UA-cam channel called Fy Nyth and she made a concoction of agricultural vinager (20 percent acid), a small amount of dish soap and some kind of orange acid. She out it in a pump sprayer and my goodness, it sure did kill all of her weeds! Maybe you should check into it. She emphasis that it HAS to be 20 percent or greater or it won't work. Normal kitchen vinager is only like 5-6 percent. Anyhow, the driveway looks fantastic! Merry Christmas 🎄

      It is a not commercial. Not sponsored. Paid for it myself, full price. This is just what I did over the weekend.

      Titan has some nice stuff. After purchasing 5 implements from them, I’ve gotten pretty used to having to make some adjustments to get them to fit. Other than that they have been good. With a half mile driveway, I put a 7’ John Deere land plane behind my 5075 and will never go back to the box blade. Surprisingly, it was within a few hundred bucks of the off brand ones and way better built. I enjoy your channel!! Keep up the good work!

    I use the EA 7' land grader with my Kubota L4330 40 hp tractor. Not nearly the same pulling resistance as my 6' LMC box blade.

    I'm betting the trash truck starts rutting up that new wet area to get to the dumpster. Possibly getting stuck. There is no large base stone down to support the weight of the heavy truck. Be ready to fix it or you might get a call that they won't return until it's fixed so their truck doesn't sink. Those trucks are heavy and need a lot of stone to hold them up, that 2-4 inches is no where near enough. But, it's a good thought so you don't have to keep moving the dumpster into your driveway for them to pick it up.
    If you have stone added later on and the center is still the high point, if you hire a guy with a dump trailer, have them put a board in the middle of their dump gate before loading or before dumping. This will prevent stone from coming out in the middle and spread it into the tire paths. Just a thought. Love the videos, keep em coming.

      Where the dumpster gravel is, is where the driveway to an old house was. So it is a solid area, just lower than the driveway and rain puddles there.

      @@CountryViewAcres Good deal, I was worried when I had seen that. I was thinking the trash truck would sink to it's axles. lol.

    That thing works really well at least it looks like it did. You should get a couple extra loads of washed gravel and get the driver to spread them as thin and far as possible on top of that recently disturbed and leveled base. Then get a heavy truck and run up and down a bunch of times to pack it into the base all the way across then resmooth it one last time.
