    Can you believe how expensive apartments are in Shanghai?! We were not expecting the size and price difference it is in Shanghai.

      @china travelthat's good to know! we could not find an apartment that cheap in Shanghai without living in a shared apartment. Since we are two people and have two cats we need a little extra space so we need to pay a bit more.

      It depends on the area, somewhere at the edge of the city but near the subway will be much cheaper, around 5000-6000 for two bedrooms apartments with nice parks downstairs

    True - rent in Shanghai is almost like in NYC now which is crazy...but on the brighter side, the pay probably will be better too and there are more opportunities as well. Good luck with your apartment hunting!

In the last few videos I thought you guys was going to move to Thailand or Cambodia 😳🥺 I'm glad you have pick Shanghai 😂 Even though rents are high (as in NYC), but you will make more, and enjoy your life to the fullest! Also I knew you were from Kansas City because you have a familiar midwest accent! I have lived in KC for 10 years (20 years ago), last 2 years were in unforgettable Plaza West.

    People are so lucky to be living Shanghai. But the best thing about this city are the expat and the bars.

  • @youtubechannel2976
    @youtubechannel2976 2 роки тому +3

    I suppose you didn’t like layout much but overall, prices were quite affordable, apartments were spacious, and it’s all in a central Shanghai. Salaries are tend to be higher in a city which is way cheaper and more livable than earlier mentioned NYC, which is even not comparable to what Shanghai can offer at all. Take a look at Tokyo for example. Rent in dorms cost starts at about 7-10k RMB per month, if you want to rent in a decent area without roommates it would cost you about 16-25k RMB for 15-35sq.m. apartment. English teacher’s salaries are about 12-15k RMB per month.

    • @JamesandKeli
      @JamesandKeli  2 роки тому

      We definitely saw some really nice apartments! It's true, Shanghai for some expats is not that expensive due to the salary increase, but for a local it has to be very expensive.
      Toyko is very expensive! That's a crazy amount to pay for rent compared to the salary.

    When I was house hunting in Beijing back in 2016, I looked at an apartment but the agent later told me “no foreigner”. I wasn’t happy about the discrimination, so I asked him why. He said that’s the home owner’s preference, and they rented to foreigners before. The renters partied hard and left the property damaged after only renting for 6 months. This seems have happened to quite a few properties with foreign students or single young professionals as renters. Oh well, I dont’ like generalization, but I did meet some westerners like that and feel quite entitiled in China.

    you guys must really like big house,two people and two cats live in a 100+ sqm space is too luxurious in Shanghai center,I dread to think paying 15000 or even more money for rent.😮😮😮

    • @JamesandKeli
      @JamesandKeli  2 роки тому

      Because we came from Suzhou we had a very nice large apartment for not a lot of money, so it was hard for us to realize the size difference here!
      100sqm is big for two, but we have to think of our cats. With two cats they need space to run and play, we also have to think of their litter boxes so we needed space to separate that.

      @@JamesandKeli I'd seriously recommend (albeit too late) to learn to at least read Chinese, or get a Chinese friend to help you. The prices you're willing to pay in Shanghai is insane and you're definitely paying foreigner prices. You can pay a hell of a lot less using Chinese agents and haggling. I wish the best of luck to you both
