  • Do you know the living expenses in Canada in 2023? In this video, we will discuss the monthly expenses of international students in Canada as well as the people that are work permit holders In Canada.
To give ta quick introduction, I am Siddharth, a graduate from UBC, Vancouver in Master of Food Science. I have been working as a HACCP Coordinator in a food manufacturing company in British Columbia, Canada for last two years. To start with the monthly expenses of international students, the first major expense is on accommodation or rent. The rents are different based on the exact location where you are looking for accommodation like Vancouver, Surrey, Langley and Abbotsford have slightly different rents based on how far the location is from Vancouver. The average rent for a single room in Vancouver is around $800-1000 whereas the average rent for a one bedroom condo in Vancouver downtown is around $2300-2400. If we talk about rent prices in Surrey, then you get a one bedroom basement for approx. 1300-1400 and a two bedroom basement for $1600-1800. Depending upon the number of people/students/family members staying in that unit, the rent can be adjusted accordingly. For example - For a two bedroom basement/ground floor suite, if 4 international students are living together on sharing then the per person rent is around $450 including everything. Similarly, if a couple is living together in a one bedroom basement then they can expect to pay around $600-$700 per person. If you are interested in getting an accommodation in a Condo/Flat, then you can find a two bedroom condo in Surrey central for around $2300-$2500, if 4 students share it then it would cost around $600-$650 per person. Due to high inflation and Recession in Canada, the price of everything has gone up like rents, mortgages, bank loans, groceries, etc.
The second main expense on the list of international students is transportation. If you are an international student in Canada, you can commute via bus or skytrain by having the BC Transit Pass (Compass Card). There are three different zones in the Vancouver region i.e., Zone 1 is Vancouver area, Zone 2 is Richmond and North Vancouver Area and Zone 3 is Surrey and Coquitlam area. You can purchase the monthly bus pass for 1 zone in $110 and for 2 Zones in $150 and for 3 zones in approx. $190. If you wan to purchase 1 day Bus pass, then that you can buy in only $11 per day. However, if you plan to buy a Car in Canada then a decent used car will cost you around $5000 and then there is ICBC Car insurance for approx. $200-300 monthly and gas for approx. $200-300 per month. Whereas, if you buy a new like Honda Civic or Corolla or Hyundai Elantra, then the car monthly installment will be around $500-$600 per month. In short, the monthly expenses of owning a car in Canada can range from $600-1200. After transportation, Food and groceries is another major expenses for international students. Considering the rising cost of living in Canada due to recession, you can expect to pay around $250-300 per month on groceries that include vegetables, fruits, dairy products, legumes, chicken & meat, dry ingredients, etc. If you are an international student and are busy working part-time job or two jobs, you can also order tiffin service in Canada. The tiffin service in Canada can cost you around $250-$400 depending upon the days of tiffin service and your food preference. Apart from Food, you also have some expense from outside food or restaurants that could be $100-200 per month depending upon your lifestyle.
Lastly, we have some grooming expenses like haircut, waxing, threading, etc., that you can consider around $60-100 for girls/women and $30-50 for boys/men. The haircut for boys in Canada is around $25 + tips. We can also have some shopping expenses but it again depends on your lifestyle in Canada. As a student, you can try to maintain this expenses as low as possible to only spend on your necessities. However, we can consider the shopping price range to be around $80-100 per month. Then we also have some miscellaneous expenses that we can consider another as another $50-100 per month. Overall, as a student you can expect to have a decent lifestyle in Canada by sharing an accommodation with a friend, cooking at home, commuting by bus, and working part-time job while studying. You can expect you spent around $1200-1800 per month depending upon your lifestyle and preference in Canada. As a student, the minimum we would spend would be around $1000-1400 per month, whereas for work permit holders, you can expect to have a decent lifestyle by spending $1400-1800 per month.
