Yeah - You left out a MASSIVE flaw with it - which is that only a tiny number of seats on each flight are Avios bookable. Maybe you've had more success if you're a loan traveller, and if you're booking seats a long way in advance, but if you're thinking of booking a flight using avios for a family of 3 or 4 in, say, 6 weeks time - forget it. No chance.
Been doing this for several years have a BA Amex card as well so my points have racked up. Bought a load of furniture the other year & got a 12 pointer on it which added up to over ten thousand miles for something I was going to buy anyway it’s a no brainer. Only thing is you need be regimented on this as it’s easy to forget sometimes & buy something in the shops then get home & see you could have got a 6-12 pointer 🤬 I very rarely buy anything on impulse now but points hunt instead. Have had a few issues with the avios not being issued & had to chase up on several occasions. The Amex card app also has cash back offers on selected retailers too that you need to keep an eye out for. Another tip is the BA double tier points offer on holidays which helps get you up the tiers to lounge access which in turn means even more avios earned on bought for not redemption flights. I have told loads of people about all of this but very few take notice their loss I guess 🙄

I am from the US, I discovered 2010 that you can use credit card for your all expenses like at grocery shopping, restaurants, gas stations; a money that you would have spent it anyway and earn tons of points like American Express gold, where you can earn 4 points every dollar on those categories and transfer those points to airlines for trips. Avios is the best though so far because as I live DFW American Airlines hub, I can book the ticket on BA website and fly AA.

Can take a few days to receive the email saying it’s gone through, and then can take up to 120 days after the stay to receive the points. But it’s usually faster than that

I’m sure you have your answer by now, but just incase… you won’t receive Avios for flights until you have completed your journey.
