Just so you know these were popular in the 70's when I was a kid....you have to get used to them. You have to let out more line to use the centripetal force fling the bait out. Also they are good to throw out bobber rigs. Also, there is a lanyard you are supposed to attack to your wrist to keep it from flying off your hands. These were not made for "angling" catch and release...these were made to catch and keep panfish and small bass...small bullhead catfish too.
Caught my very first fish ever with a pocket fisherman. The Pocket fisherman was given to me when I was a kid by a neighbor in the 1980's. He originally bought it for ice fishing but stopped going and passed it on to me. I had the reel tuned in about 2003 and it works better than ever. Largest fish I have ever caught was a 19lb carp. But mostly shore fish bluegills, sunfish, crappies and small bass. When camping and catch-N-fry. I've heard there was a rerelease in the 2000's but haven't seen one. Not the best fishing tool but nice when space is limited.
My neighbor gave me one she had from she was younger, she's an old lady and told me her dad bought it for her to start fishing. I receive it as a gift when I graduated from 6th grade, and at the day I take care of it as my life. Even tho I didn't use it too much at all, I appreciate the fact that she gave it to me. That's one of the best gifts I've ever had
That’s one thing I’ve had trouble with!! When they are smaller and swallow the damn thing, by hand is pretty tough to get in there 😂 but the needle nose always come in handy for that!!
For those that don't know, if you guy hook or tounge hook one and it's bleeding you can pour pepsi or and soft drink on the wound and it will slow down or stop the bleeding
I think it is good on a few points: 1. Simple and spontaneous , it's in the glove box. 2. Made for panfish, leave the bass alone! 3. Survival mode, all in one and it can feed you in an emergency. Put it in the "Bug Out" bag!
Mom recently passed. Looking it garage I found dad (he passed 3 years ago) had the popeil pocket fisherman. I dont think it was ever used. Looking thru owners manual. Its dated 1972....lol. checking it out now.
I just received mine today, all original, in the box with all the accessories. I did a proper directional re-string on it and silicone lubed all the plastic parts. I took it apart because the "line drag" feature did not work. I've checked everything but the drag feature just doesn't work. Since you have the same one, does your drag feature work?
I have one of these and like it a lot for two simple reasons,I can just have something to fish with real quick, and I can get into those small places to cast (under low trees, etc) where it's impossible to cast with my full rod and reel. This little guy won't be your primary means of catching the big stuff, but I'll tell ya,it's a very nice backup for those hard to reach spots you wished you'd could drop your line.
I've got a popeils pocket fisherman still in original box, order form, and the how to use it, cast it, maintain it etc. I like it cause I use it in place loaded with bass where I can't use a real rod and the ponds a highway pond nobody fishes for two reasons one it's posted and two I had to make a little space chop chop hackhack to get to the water, and the pocket fisherman allowed me to cast but it is a my own fishing hole that just is loaded with bass until one day I suppose will end with me getting booted but who can really blame anyone for fishing anyways that's my story and I'm sticking to it
I had one of these, the string came off, tried to restring it for 2 hours, couldnt figure out how to do it, and then got mad and smashed it on the concrete
I'm actually somewhat impressed. I believe this would make a good backpack rod/reel set for use with panfish such as bream or crappie but as you stated , I don't think I would want to try to land a 5lb anything . The reel just wouldn't be able to support that kind of stress especailly without a proper rod to help land anything with any size to it. Great vid !
I was so afraid this dude was gonna bust out in tears. Only the best for him I guess. I started fishing in 1965 with a cane pole and when I was 10 y.o. in 1968 I got a used Zebco 202 on a steel fishing rod. Some of the best times of my life. The kids that had the Pocket fisherman were the spoiled kids that got the newest of everything....kinda like this cry baby.
Don't laugh at that thing! I've seen dudes actually pull some really big carp, and some nice sized largemouth, and even smallmouth (with the help of a assistant with a big long net, ready to be there the minute he sees scale shine at the surface) out of some tight places where a casting rod is too much!
Oh my goodness I remember this commercial for the Pocket fisherman, like seriously for real here. every time I would watch the 📺 the commercial would come on for this. A lot of people I knew ordered this but I didn't. to be honest with you, I always thought it was a scam and I was one of them who did not water this at all. It just didn't seem right. I know a few people had some success with it and they loved it and other ones didn't.
I think I figured out what went wrong with your fishing trip. It appears somebody sabotaged your tackle box. It looks like they swiped all your 'confidence' and replaced it with a big wad of 'poor attitude' thereby assuring that you would not have a good time. There's simply no other explanation. I mean you wear Crocs for Pete's sakes, how particular can you be? Next time, make sure you bring the right equipment including 'confidence' and a 'good attitude' rather than knowing it's gonna suck beforehand. If you want to have a really good time bring an older person and they can bring their secret ingredient: NOSTALGIA.
It is umm... Interesting. 😂🤣😂 It really is not terrible but you for sure can't feel the bites. But it is better then being at the pond with nothing. 👊💪
Great video! I would do use one! Haha! Reminds me of the crazy video you did with the pocket rocket. Do a part 2 man! Oh and you look goofy man but you having fun and fishing and that's what matters
Success! That was pretty awesome with the original one! Lol I kept one in my company truck before I got a dock demon. Little ponds and creeks I’d hit everyone I found driving to locations in the oil fields I service. Great video man and take care!
You lookin real goofy! 🤣 But atleast you are fishing! Great fun video to watch!! Btw we got our giveaway prize from ya that we won from last month. We have tried to email you, and we tried but for some reason our email will not send to ya but we been having some real issues with our internet.(hopefully it's fixed now for good) great catches!! 🎣🎣 Remember the pocket rocket video. One of our very first videos we watched and a favorite one of ours! Do another one of the pocket rocket vids(part 2 and go after only a few species of fish, or just 2 different species or just bass) and give another one away! Great video Brett! Keep em coming. We would fish with!! 👍🏻👊🏻
Here is where you went wrong. Your pants don't have rhinestones from the RONCO rhinestone setter. Next time you hate on my generation, please go all out. LOL
Great throwback lol. I remember somebody when I was younger had one then of course I remember the newer model as well lol. Definitely would use it as a creek fishing setup for those tight spots with a lot of trees and cover. Would be great to fit in those spots and catch little bluegill etc on. Great video buddy 👊🏻
I ain't a saying you would starve if ins you only had a fish pole but making any coin out of it not so much. Well before the interweb that is. Fishing(river) for a living is hard work and can be scary at times. its a odd feeling to hook something that can pull a big Jon boat up stream on a river.
I would give it to my six year old daughter to fish with when we go out.
Congrats you are the winner of the WORST COMBO ever made! email bburkes.fishing@gmail.com to claim it.

I am in 100% agreement with you. Definitely not meant for kayaking. That is really what gave me the move trouble out of it was I was on a kayak. 👊
It's not a gimmick. Yes, the commercials are over hyping it of course. This is good enough to take while hiking.

Haven’t seen a tag yet that’s cool!
Nice
I have one that works, but I have other vintage collapsible fishing gear I prefer. I have caught fish with my pocket fisherman.
The commercial said it came with a Johnson reel.
I own one of the black ones.
I love mine.
Just really hard to work on a kayak. I am sure it is much easier to set the hook on a boat or bank
For those that don't know, if you guy hook or tounge hook one and it's bleeding you can pour pepsi or and soft drink on the wound and it will slow down or stop the bleeding
Really... That is one I need to put in the ole memory bank.
@@B_the_Cameraman yep
Had one of the originals.... years ago.... it was fun....
They are fun but I don't recommend it on a kayak.
fished with one as a kid , the drag failed the first time out .
I think it is good on a few points: 1. Simple and spontaneous , it's in the glove box. 2. Made for panfish, leave the bass alone! 3. Survival mode, all in one and it can feed you in an emergency. Put it in the "Bug Out" bag!
I have 3 of these little rods, but I think you missed the point , they work and work well, a rod that you can keep any were,

How goofy....the pocket fisherman looks ok.
It really isn't all that bad but getting enough leverage to set the hook is a bit awkward for sure.

This is so dumb 😫🤣🤣🤣 that was epic
I would test it out. Probably use it as a loaner pole for one of my friends that fish in my boat when they dont come with there setup
So you punish your friends? Lol
Sure would. For not coming prepared.
@@SHEEPDOG-rh2ke I didn't say you were wrong. Just confirming. 👊
The pocket fisherman rules

@@Tom-xp7dl you sound like a great person to be around. Have a great day
Actually, I would probably buy one.
I got two of the vintage ones. They work just as good any rod reel combos for the same coin.
Best fishing rod ever.
..but then you could of bought a 'pet Rock' or a 'mood ring' in the day in the early 70's.. Robert at 69.
if I had one I would probably be able to fish more. cause I have no time to fish now because of the work I do.
What kind of work do you do?
Oh my God I had one of those when I was 5 but it was brown, holy crap😂😂😂😂😂
Gotta love the commercial telling everyone how the new pocket fisherman is just about the best thing since sliced bread, lol great video B
Man you be hooking it
Lol. That would be a good flipping stick. Flipping a 3/4 jig into heavy cover. Haha. Another great video man.
Ya know iffin I lived on a fish and bait farm hell
I wood use it and see what my boys can do with it keep up the good work your contact is getting better and better

In all honestly the main reason I had so much trouble was because I was in a kayak, I think. Bank fishing I think it might work ok
