Matisse completó su trabajo cuando tenía 81 años. "Pese a todas sus imperfecciones, lo considero mi obra maestra", escribió en sus memorias.
Cuando completó el trabajo de la capilla en 1951, tres años antes de su muerte, dijo: "¿Creo en Dios?" preguntó en voz alta en una ocasión. "Sí, creo, cuando estoy trabajando. Cuando soy sumiso y modesto me siento rodeado por alguien que me hace hacer cosas de las que no soy capaz".
No parece poco para quien cuarenta años antes había afirmado: "Yo sueño un arte equilibrado, puro, tranquilo, sin sujeto inquietante o preocupante, que sea para cualquier trabajador intelectual, para el hombre de negocios o para el literato, por ejemplo, un lenitivo, un calmante cerebral, algo análogo a una buena poltrona donde reposar de sus fatigas físicas", en definitiva, una morada, y Matisse la construyó de verdad.
También destacó que "todo arte digno de ese nombre es religioso. Ya sea que esté hecho de líneas o de colores, si esta creación no es religiosa, no es arte. No es más que un documento, una anécdota".
El pintor describió a la capilla como producto de "una vida entera de trabajo" aunque le requirió cuatro años de labor.
