I love this song as an Australian and as a 30 year fan. When I found Tom I felt he was someone I could listen to forever, and I have, well not forever but many years. I just dont get tired of him, my family and friends may, but not me.
Several years ago, when I discovered this, I was listening to it drinking my coffee, smoking my gypsies and writing, sitting at the kitchen table. For me this more than inspiring song is no longer dissociable from this moment of my life! What a great artist! What a generous and sublime interpretation! ❤️
I danced with my husband on this song...it was the only time he dared to dance with me in public ...Tears appear in my eyes everytime I hear this song. I remember : Hungry and angry ....and so on
I just LOVE all the vivid images and such poignant music. Just can’t forget “ghosts that sell memories,” “It’s a battered old suitcase to a hotel someplace and a wound that will never heal.” And of course, “Good night to the street sweepers, night watchmen, flame keepers, and good night, Matilda, too.”
MERCI. MERCI. MERCI. So long cher Mark... Gilda - Paris
I have been a huge fan of Tom Waits since the mid 70's. I was lucky enough to see him at the Beacon Theater in NYC in the late 70's and it was an amazingt show. This song is ridiculously brilliant.
The song's subtitle ("Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen") is a reference to the time that Waits spent in Copenhagen, Denmark while on tour in June 1976. In Copenhagen, Waits had met Danish singer and violinist Mathilde Bondo. Bondo performed violin during Waits' appearance on the DR1 TV show and said that she "of course had to show him the city - we were in Tivoli and on Christianshavn. It was a lovely night [...] we waltzed a lot". Bondo later said "I'm really proud to have been the muse for his song" and referred to Waits' depiction of Copenhagen as "somewhat ambiguous but it's a wonderful song." From Wikipedia
Tom is just brilliant have Ben a fan since I was teenager now 64 I would love to meet him thats probably never going to happen but who knows, waltzing Matilda is just amazing
How could anyone not love the performer/the man after hearing/seeing that. I heard this for the first time as a live performance at "Bogarts" in the University Village in Cincinnati; compliments of the owner, Al Porcolab. Thanks, Al !!! I'll always appreciate your thoughtfulness and generosity.
WHAT IS A TROOP MAN OVER... ??? Can't spell manoeuvre - it isn't difficult - MAN OVER what a twonk.... When you got the man over did you have a buggeringly good time..
Tom neemt evenals Shane een even grote plaats in in mijn hart vanwege zijn voortdurende contramine en verzet tegen afstomping en dat met een unieke rasperige stem en prachtige lyrics. (Loek, Holland)
For years I would just dismiss a version of a Cohen, Waits or Dylan classic, sung by anyone else. Now I have come to the view that other versions simply show up the quality of a great song in all its splendour. So...Rod Stewart's version does have something to offer-beauty in a different light!
Jutta Maier Well, first of all, many people say that Rod Stewarts cover is better. Second of all, did you ever hear the cover of ,,go your own way'' bye the cranberries? EDIT: *by

It tears me apart, this song, every time I listen to it. Tom waits and his heartache voice... Wow! ❤
One of the greatest performances of a song l have ever heard.
I agree ♡
Tom's version...breaks my heart...every time.
Mine too😥🙏🕯
Thanks.
Tom wrote this. It's his. Everything else is a version. This is an original.
Tom just knew how to share emotion maybe a bit much. Him and old Gg
Always thought I'd like to sit a bar and have a drink with this guy ❤
This guy's songs bring me to tears.

I've only come across Tom recently. Outstanding.
This man is a gift from God. Cherish him.
I cry e v e r y time I hear this..thank you Tom it has heart.
I thought I was the only one. I don't understand. Also, don't care.
me too
wasted and wounded
and it ain't what the moon did
i got what i paid for now
see you tomorrow
hey frank can i borrow
a couple of bucks from you
to go waltzing matilda waltzing matilda
you'll go waltzing matilda with me
i'm an innocent victim
of a blinded alley
and i'm tired of all these soldiers here
no-one speaks english
and everything's broken
and my Stacys are soakin' wet
to go waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
you'll go a waltzing matilda with me
now the dogs are barking
and the taxi cabs parking
a lot they can do for me
i begged you to stab me
you tore my shirt open
and i'm down on my knees tonight
old bushmills i staggered
you buried the dagger
your silhouette window light
to go waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
you'll go a waltzing matilda with me
and i've lost my st. christopher
now that i kissed her
and the one-arm bandit knows
and the maverick chinaman
and the cold-blooded signs
and the girls down by the striptease shows go
waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
you'll go a waltzing matilda with me
no i don't want your sympathy
fugitives say
that the streets aren't for dreaming now
manslaughter dragnets
and the ghosts that sell memories
want a piece of the action anyhow
go waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
you'll go waltzing matilda with me
and you can ask any sailor
and the keys from the jailor
and the old men in wheelchairs know
that matilda's the defendant
she killed about a hundred
and she follows wherever you may go
waltzing matilda, waltzing matilda
you'll go waltzing matilda with me
and it's a battered old suitcase
to a hotel someplace
and a wound that will never heal
no prima donnas the perfume is on

A voice that tears at your heart, soulful, resonating with the long aching years, almost broken and beaten but with a power that can’t be broken.
❤

Perfect song to cry into an ashtray to.
God Bless you Tom !
Awesome ... this guy can shatter an iceberg with his voice!!!
yes I do believe he can, also my heart...love tom...!!

Did you ever see so many black n white photos.
I like Tom Waits. He is one of the boys in Steinbeck's Cannery Row.
Life is short and he knows it...
A real masterpiece!!!

Wrong. Tom himself calls this song Waltzing Matilda. Everybody could give a song this title if the artist pleases so.
Yet this is how many fans identify this beautifully poignant song. Lighten up....please. Is it really worth the indignation??!!

im sorry for your pain, gisele.
Obviously a million miles better than bleeding Rod Stewart!
Nunca mais haverá uma voz como esta

magnifica voce
He let a stone crying
One of my favorite songs of his but it’s called Tom Traubert’s Blues, not Waltzing Matilda.
A merry Waltz In Matilda with me
