I remember my first job with hijab, I was so happy that the managers accept me for the position and was gratefull. They gave me one of empty rooms for praying. There was no one happier than me those days alhamduliLLah. Everyone interested and asked a lot of questions about Islam. I just didn't observe any negative, because I was glad too much having job and wearing hijab and willing pray any time I want. Do more dua!!! May Allah help evebody who struggling at workplace

Unfortunately, my experience as a muslim in the workplace isn't always pleasing. I am not allowed to perform prayers at the office so I need to go to the nearest masjid. Some of my senior coworkers sometimes bombarded me with questions about Islam in a negative way like, "How could Islam oppress women?" "Why are men allowed to marry multiple women? Geez, where's the love?" But my peers (around my age) are supportive, Alhamdulillah. My friend even said to report this issue to the Ministry of Manpower but I think that's too much, idk. May Allah always give strength to me, and other of my Muslim sisters and brothers who are going through similar paths. May we get a better workplace with healthier environment and more respectful people.

I live in Australia and Alhamdulillah I’ve never had a problem wearing hijab at work and praying salah in the office 🥰 I feel like Aussies are really easy going and they’re just more curious than anything, in an innocent way. Like my co-workers would ask questions about why I wear hijab, why we fast Ramadan, and what exactly I’m doing when I’m praying 🥲😂 For majority of them I’m the only practicing Muslim they know so it’s nice to portray Islam in a positive light to them Alhamdulillah. Like you said in the video, it’s important to be firm and confident with your Muslim identity in the workplace, and in turn I feel like that’s what makes non-Muslims respect you more. I politely decline their invitations when they stay back for after-work drinks or Christmas parties, but they’re always understanding. It was hard to do at first but one of my Madrassa teachers advised me to not compromise my Deen for anyone if it means that I would be doing something displeasing to Allah, and that really stuck with me since.

Been working in my current role for the past year and this is my 2nd ramadan & Alhamdulilah for my first ramadan i was the only muslim in my work space and when i said im fasting i did get alot of questions from my co-workers like no even water? etc but all was genuine. they asked why i was fasting and i just explained it to them and they where the sweetest they would all check in on me and when they brought in dessert or food to the office theyd package so i can take home :) when i also started i communicated that i pray at specific times and Alhamdulilah theyve accomadated, i even explained how our salah prayers changes depending on seasons so that i couldnt have fixed prayer times. They offered me the nursing room that no one uses so that has been my prayer room.. Also explained how i wouldnt know when i need to take off for EID untill the night before because we wont know untill we sight it, so i just texted my supervisor the night of and let her know i wasnt coming and Alhamdulilah with all these requirements ive never had any push back.. im honestly blessed...But as Subhi mentioned YOU HAVE TO BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE.... it doesnt have to make sense to them as long as it makes sense to you that all that matters.. May Allah make it easy on us & Yes agreed i take lunch naps as well happens mostly in ramadan lol 😂

my POV as an american muslim with rotations in houston, a medical student in ireland who also lived there as a child, and work experience in the UK:
    - all I have to say about my rotations in houston (which were mostly night shifts) is that yes, they let me take time out for fajr, but I had to pray in the chapel because that's where the other muslim girl told me she used to pray. I think it was easier to ask for time because it was fajr rather than zuhr/asr. but the resident with me was so nice about letting me leave for fajr alhumdulillah!
    - in Ireland, there were a loooot of Malaysian students with me and mashaAllah they were all so strong in their deen! once we had an exam that started right after maghrib and everyone, even the non-hijabis(!), prayed jamah in front of all the non-muslims in the tiny waiting area we had (I wasn't in on this plan...so I stood awkwardly with the irish 🙃) I think it's easier for them to be firm about Islam because it's pretty much in their culture, they're from a muslim country, and as someone who was usually the only brown person or muslim it was more difficult to be confident as a muslim in these specific settings and ask for accommodations because, well, you're the only one. there is strength in numbers, but as the hadith says, you should always be ready to walk alone; being the only one isn't an excuse so may Allah make us all firm in our identities as muslims and forgive us for our shortcomings. my Ramadans during this time ended up mostly during summer, so can't say much except we got time to break our fasts.
    - the uk is basically a muslim country lol during my first rotation as a doctor there I had no idea where the prayer room was until maybe 2-3 months in. then I realised that most people, even the ones you wouldn't expect, went regularly to go pray and it truly was no big deal. it was legit mind blowing to me. one of my colleagues said generally in every hospital you can ask for time to go pray and it's no problem. Irish people are the nicest people on the planet, but not very diverse, so this was a stark contrast to what I was used to. I don't think there was much lenience during Ramadan, but this is probably because it's the medical field. all of your accommodations sound AMAZING and I have a blanket and pillow in my car at all times because you never know when you'll need it
TLDR so happy for u livin ur best ramadan and ur lunchtime naps! clearly I should've gone with business and marketing where everyone said i belonged 🤧

    Asalam aleikum brother Subhi,
JazakaAllahkhair for sharing valuable points. My best memorable moments in the workforce was when I worked in a community hospital. Alhamdulillah, I made it a priority to kindly communicate my need to have a space for prayer, and that during Ramadan, I would be fasting. Alhamdulillah, my manager was very kind to accommodate me with a space to pray. Some of my co-workers would kindly set a meal aside for me so that I could eat it after breaking my fast. Shortly after work in the evening, I would go to the Masjid and pray tarawih prayers with my Muslim community.

I’m a business administration student at university who is struggling with the questions such as “what am I gonna do after all these?” or “how can I be beneficial for humanity as a person in this work environment?”. I feel so lucky to find this podcast before I graduate because your perspective has contributed to me a lot as a Muslim tbh. As you know, multicultural issues are always debated especially in the HR courses and of course Muslim’s rights involved. After listening this podcast, I took courage from your influence and I could speak for my hijab (or other rights from different minorities that are misunderstood or disrespected) during the lecture. And now I feel like I kinda know what to do in the long-term, I guess. I just wanted to say thanks for widening my viewpoint with your ideas! Can’t wait for the next ones. :)

These are very helpful tips. I once worked as a waiter and mind you, the peak hour was during sunset. So, it was a struggle between trying to practise my faith (perfoming the salah) and to work at the same time. I always had to rush in my salah and it was very tiring. Even though i am from a Muslim country, but I was the only Muslim working there. I agree with what Subhi said. Be firm with your needs as a Muslim. Do ask for them to accommodate you some break to really do your salah. And it is okay if you feel a bit struggle-ish, because trust me, the feeling and peace knowing you have perform your duty as Muslim will always be rewarding. I'm praying for all us to be eased in our journey as Muslim.
Wish me luck for new work tomorrow! Aameen. Love you all.

Thank you for this, this was really helpful. I don't have any muslims in my workplace or near my city I believe, so it was nice to hear this. If you can make a podcast episode about "being a muslim in corporate america (besides/after Ramadan)," like after ramadan, that would be awesome as well. Like how do we deal with happy hour invites? And what if all of my coworkers drink? What if all of them ONLY hang out at the bars? And people say that we should go to happy hour, so that it looks good to the managers, for team bonding. One of my managers said that showing up to these events, at the bar/happy hour, can help with promotions. So if you can make an episode about that, it would be so great. Thank you and Salam!

Assalaam’ualaikum Delilah! May Allah make it easy for you, I know what it’s like to be the only Muslim in the workplace. My co-workers also have after work drinks and Christmas parties etc. I hope this helps but you could politely decline the invitations and have a gentle conversation with your co-workers and inform them that drinking alcohol and being around alcohol is against your religion. I know it can be hard, but usually you’ll find that when you explain the reasons why, they will inshaAllah be understanding and in turn may even respect you more for being true and firm in your Muslim identity! And if you find they are not respectful, then remember that your reward is with Allah if you bear patience 💗 My teacher advised me not to sell our Deen and our Muslim identity for a short price, and to not compromise if it means we are displeasing Allah. If you deny the invitations to join the bar bcos you fear Allah, even tho others tell you that it helps with promotions, you have to trust in Him that He reward you in this life *and* the next life for avoiding such places and pleasing Him! 🥰 Your rizq is already guaranteed, please don’t think you’re going to miss out on a promotion if you don’t join them at these events, and be mindful of the reward you get with Allah instead 💗

I wish I knew this when I was in a BPO corporate way back in the Philippines. I should have asked my rights too. I just realized that I can make arrangements with my needs to practice my righteous rights. Alhamdulillah this is a good point. Very informative and encouraging. Appreciate it brother.
