As someone who's watched countless UA-cam videos and I say you're VERY good at teaching. Informative, only technical where it needs to be, appropriately entertaining... I look forward to trying this, and to watching your other videos!
I just rewatched this. Its REALLY well edited and scored and the instructions are clear and easy to understand. Well done - since this I have watched a couple other bubble freezing vids which were basic AF and offered very little in the way of step by step instructions. Excellent job!
Ok Disney, listen up! You guys have to use this guy's stuff in the next Marvel movie. These would be great as force fields or shields created by some super hero or villian!
Thanks so much @Dave 😃😃😃 That is the reason I made this video - after watching what else was on UA-cam, I couldn't find anything with basic instructions 👍
I’ve been wanting to add this my photography for a while but I never knew the process to do this. Thank you for the making step by step so easy to understand and tips and suggestions along the way too!
Thanks to this video I was able to make/ take really cool frozen bubble pictures. I wish I could post one of my photos here. Just wanted to say thank you for making this, it was a big help.
I'm so glad you included the temperature needs as I'm in Central TX and we are having a bit of cold spell (in the 20*s) and I wanted to try this but I guess I'll just have to watch your amazing, beautiful footage of this frozen bubble fun. I was going to try it while in Chicago in December but did more street photography and forgot that I was going to try frozen bubbles. Your video is FANTASTIC!
This is one of the best videos I've seen on UA-cam. Clear, simple, funny. I love it! I will try for myself. Thank you Neil. As of today, I will be one more subscriber.

Great video, we are suppose to have 7 degrees down here in NY and according to you cold enough. Will follow you tips and get everything cold before trying.
Awesome video Neil! I was raised in the North, so I know cold. Groton Connecticut cold, to be exact. I'm so looking forward to doing this. I'm an entertainer/bubble artist but have not mastered the frozen bubble yet. Got my gear ready and look forward to venturing out with my camera and granddaughters. Thanks for the inspiration, my friend.
Thanks @Hamid Asim 😃 Greatly appreciate the feedback👍👍👍 Used a Canon 5D mark IV with a few different f/1.4 primes - audio was captured with a Rode lavalier paired with a massive lav dead cat, going to a Zoom H4n 👍
Hey Neil! I found your videos from random feed. I have to say I really enjoy your explanation! The videos are so well-edited and your speaking is very clear. Wonder why you aren't gathering views yet, I hope you get more soon. I got new ideas for photography after each video. Keep up the awesome work!
Really good video! We just had "winter" in Vancouver 2 days ago, so I'll have to wait to try this next year. Great job editing everything. Really well done.
@Christine Turner, as a Vancouver resident myself I've found winter temperatures in the Lower Mainland aren't quite cold enough. I've tried to freeze bumble on numerous occasions near -5°C, without any success. I've also found that the relative humidity can impact how successful freezing bubbles are: with less humidity being more desirable 👍👍👍
@TraceyMcCarriar I think you're the first person to actually make mention of it - and I'm stoked to hear that someone else remembers such a classic commercial 😂😂😂
Great video, I have been photographing bubbles with all my students since the summer and now I can't wait to photograph bubbles in the winter. I am wondering if we could do it in the big freezer at school, not a walk-in but upright. Also we found that adding more soap and glycerin help for more durability and color in general.
Incredible images, must give this a try if the temp gets that low in Southern England :-) Just came across your vlog page now working through past vlogs, very informative, thanks.
Thanks @Jeff Files 😃 Admittedly, I don't upload too much here nor too frequently as these video seem to take quite a bit of time to make. Hopefully you find them helpful. 😃😃😃
great tutorial - any idea how much wind is too much for most bubbles to work - what wind level on your gadget have you found to be the limit generally speaking ?
Wow I didn't even know this existed. Sadly we don't have snow in this parts. Btw those Frost formations look dope. Great video. Also did u get the D850 or what? Are U gonna upload frequently?
+Zaber Ansary I suppose freezing anything would be a challenge in your neck of the world. 😛 I don't really have the need to move to a Nikon D850 - the Canon 5D mark IV does everything I need it to. Additionally, I'm too heavily invested in the EF lens system to make migrating systems even slightly financially viable.
Thank you so much for your helpful tips. Great tutorial! You mentioned that you did this with an iPhone. That’s what I’d like to do. I have a Moment macro lens. Is that enough? Did you use another app for manual settings and if you did, what settings did you use? Thank you so much once again.
Thanks for the kind words @Choo Choo Rosenbloom 😃😃😃 I honestly can't remember what version of iPhone I used, likely an 8 or 7 plus, but no special lens or app was used. Just the plain ol' Apple camera app and the wide lens of the phone. That said, using the Moment macro lens could produce some terrific results - and definitely something worth trying out 👍

Many thanks @Oli Munnery 👍 The glow-stick liquid is a brilliant idea - though you'll have to experiment with it and mixing soap to maintain the bubbles. Let me know if it works.
Add or use invisible ink to the bubble solution, then hit it with UV light (blacklight). Then that bubble will glow! I didn't come up with it, but ran across someone who used that technique amazingly.
Thank you so much for this awesome video. You are ridiculously likeable and easy to watch. Your bubbles are gorgeous (and I didn't even mind the background music - which is unusual for me). Your explanations were very, very good! Super video! I have one question: if you literally BLOW the bubble, doesn't the warm breath heat it up too much? In the video, it so often looks as if you're merely touching the end of the straw to/near the surface, then pulling away (but I can't imagine how that works, either). I never seem to get weather cold enough to try the bubble blowing, but I'm still hopeful 🙂 Thanks again!
Many thanks @Shutterbeetle 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃 Yes, I regret not including more in depth detail in to how the bubbles are actually created. You're correct in that the end of the straw doesn't need to make contact with the intended surface - you can even have a bubble freeze on the end of a straw... provided there's zero wind and you have a steady hand.
Try cross polarization. I have a linear (or circular) polarizer on my lens and a linear polarizer beyond my subject. Polarize the light illuminating the bubbles. I purchased a whole 50" by 19" (127×48 cm) sheet of polarizing film decades ago that I use pieces of for my ice crystal photography.
@J. E. to my knowledge the only way to have the bubbles freeze before they pop, is by exposing them an ambient air temperature well below freezing. Hope this helps. 👍
I don't know if it would work, but a small hole drilled in the surface with a tiny colored LED light, might make a pretty cool light source. Will post if I ever try it.
That’s beautiful and well explained and demonstrated. My biggest problem is I HATE cold weather. Nevertheless, I find this quite compelling. In ten more months, northern Illinois should have suitable conditions.
Great Video mate! Waiting for 2 winters now for the temperatures to drop...:D Maybe I finally start my first tests at nigh when the temperatures drop to -4°C (hope this will work...)
You make it look so easy. Got bubbles and some video but not anywhere near your quality. Round 2, while the sun is fading and the temperature is above -30.
I've photographed frozen bubbles in only -2 degrees celsius. And here in Denmark you can actually get bubble solution in the shops year round 🤣. Try backlighting with colored christmas lights, and fully open aperture. Depending on the lens you get the most beautiful bubbly bokeh. Pun intended!
Hello, can it be done in studio set up. I live in India which never has weather like over there. Any tips for trying it on ice pack ? Or shall I make my set up in freezer of fridge rather....
@sushil shinde I suppose it's possible to reproduce the necessary environment in a controlled setting, but it would require some rather extensive resources. The air temperature is the most important aspect of bubbles freezing - and the colder the better. Good luck. 👍
@Oksana Posan it could be that -7°C isn't quite cold enough. I've tried to freeze bumble on numerous occasions near -5°C, without any success. I've also found that the relative humidity can impact how successful freezing bubbles are: with less humidity being more desirable 👍

Why do you use glycerin?
Good question @andreabalzarini6615, it helps thicken the bubble solution - making it a bit stronger and resilient against wind 🌬️ 🍃
What if i don't have a gliceryne?
@Poczciwy miłek, without glycerin the bubbles are more likely to pop if disturbed by the wind 👍
