That chief made me soooo emotional with his love fo his people and wisdom. Hoping that more chiefs back in my beautiful Solomon Islands will have that same mindset❤. Future lo hand blo iumi na wantoks.
Ooh, so beautiful! I love these Solomon Islanders cultures! Beautiful Island and beautiful people! Thank you very much for sharing! I plan to visit this Island in the very near future.
It is so impressive to hear the people speak English so well. I know plenty people in my country , situated in central Europe, who can hardly speak as well as the folks in the video can. In spite of having the access to the latest technology.
Great documentary....i hope that other communities in the Solomon Islands can learn from Zaira and find sustainable ways of managing forest resources. Well done Zaira.
@@scorchinggoat9589 - Hi mate - true sustainability requires a static population figure of no more than 500-600 million peoples...even with their 'sustainable development' etc we are consuming at a rate of 1.7 Earths...and it's only increasing! 'Sustainability' at this moment in time is just a 'seen to be doing something' - rather than nothing at all! People think we are on a sustainable path......we are most certainly not.

I had villagers come to me to complain that their trees were being cut down. I had seen a large stone jetty being built a distance west of Honiara over a period of several days. After it was completed a section of trees was removed and a large track was revealed that had been cleared inland and into the jungle. Over the course of a few days masses of trees were brought and loaded onto a large barge that went back and forth to its mother ship (Chinese). I went to see the Ex Prime Minister to express my dismay. He said he was shocked to hear what was happening but by the time anything would be done the Chinese would have left. Now here is the problem, corruption is as rife in the Solomon's as in any other country. The only difference is they are not as street wise as other politicians to hide it. The Chinese were giving away chainsaws and Lucas Sawmills to villagers in exchange for trees. This enabled the villagers to go further into the jungle and cut down trees that would otherwise not be accessible.
That man is so so wise! I admire him for turning the money down because most people don't. I can only hope that future leaders feel the same as him when he passes. I wish I could afford to go there! It looks amazing!!!
A villager in The western Province told us that the headhunting stuff is just bull they tell to tourists. The skulls actually belong to once loved and revered ancestors who continue to watch over them.
Besides the first woman interviewed, I don’t see the need for them to use English subtitles. I can understand the people very well. The firs lady sounded like she was speaking in a mixture of English and the native tongue, similar to Ni-Van Bislama.
mohanaturo I didn’t say it was Bislama, I said it sounded similar-to me that is. I was only speaking for myself , so excuse me for not knowing the name of the native tongue-Pidgin English, Dear!
*my grandfather fought in WWII over there. Says there are giants 14ft tall there. i didnt believe him when i was a kid. until the invention of the internet*
Govt official is clearly CORRUPT that they let this logging legal and not do something. Applaud that village chief to protect the land and never trade it for money as it is the source of temptation.
Life is changing fast in Solomon Islands due to a number of things, one of which is commercial logging. The Forestry Department have their side of the story but it seems that there is so much under table dealings by the commercial loggers. There are laws in place but the problem is the implementation .
This is an unfortunate case of "you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don’t." On the plus side: logging generates short term wealth for the islanders as well as boosting the economy. Down side of long term effects: turned into Easter Island. Solution: creat sustainable logging through preserve/replanting trees.
Very sad how deforestation still is on going. Plant hemp please! It is better than trees takes less time to grow and mill. This needs to be a worldwide movement. Prayers
Classic UN, you are talking about a problem without mentioning the culprit, who is behing the logging in the Solomon Islands? China, but never would the UN say something bad about China...
Today February 2019, Foreign Company Still Logging in Solomon island, Logging should be STOP otherwise the Forest in Solomon island will finish, Deforestation as SARAWAK East Malaysia and Kalimantan, The beauty of Solomon island will be Perish or destroy, United Nation, Australia , NZ should help Solomon island people so that they survive without Killing Solomon Virgin Forest

I wish outsiders do not name Solomons as headhunters.. Western Solomons is only a fraction of the islands..they were the headhunters. Malaita is a custom land. It depends on it's land and waters. Only a small area is used for subsistence farming.. therefore saving its forests. Western ideals bring about the destruction of the native way of life.. thus the decline of forestries.

Melanesian Geo there is NOTHING Sustainable about Sustainability. That's a fact, it's all a con. The whole Planet needs TRUE Sustainability.

Switching to Growing Hemp for Building Products, cutting down the Rain Forest until they are gone is just wrong.

Interesujący film. Lasy wycina się szybko, a posadzone drzewa rosną zbyt wolno. Zgodnie z mądrością Indian, gdy zginie przyroda pieniędzy nie zjedzą.

Such beautiful Islands, and yet people want to build mass tourism and destroy those islands.
Look at these driving what they did are you actually going to allow them to do that to those precious people have they not been through enough?
