    It is so impressive to hear the people speak English so well. I know plenty people in my country , situated in central Europe, who can hardly speak as well as the folks in the video can. In spite of having the access to the latest technology.

    Great documentary....i hope that other communities in the Solomon Islands can learn from Zaira and find sustainable ways of managing forest resources. Well done Zaira.

      Melanesian Geo there is NOTHING Sustainable about Sustainability. That's a fact, it's all a con. The whole Planet needs TRUE Sustainability.

      @@TheLuminousOne what tf do you mean you say we need sustainability but that sustainability isn't sustainable like im so confused

    • @TheLuminousOne
      @TheLuminousOne 3 роки тому +1

      @@scorchinggoat9589 - Hi mate - true sustainability requires a static population figure of no more than 500-600 million peoples...even with their 'sustainable development' etc we are consuming at a rate of 1.7 Earths...and it's only increasing! 'Sustainability' at this moment in time is just a 'seen to be doing something' - rather than nothing at all! People think we are on a sustainable path......we are most certainly not.

    I had villagers come to me to complain that their trees were being cut down. I had seen a large stone jetty being built a distance west of Honiara over a period of several days. After it was completed a section of trees was removed and a large track was revealed that had been cleared inland and into the jungle. Over the course of a few days masses of trees were brought and loaded onto a large barge that went back and forth to its mother ship (Chinese). I went to see the Ex Prime Minister to express my dismay. He said he was shocked to hear what was happening but by the time anything would be done the Chinese would have left. Now here is the problem, corruption is as rife in the Solomon's as in any other country. The only difference is they are not as street wise as other politicians to hide it. The Chinese were giving away chainsaws and Lucas Sawmills to villagers in exchange for trees. This enabled the villagers to go further into the jungle and cut down trees that would otherwise not be accessible.

    Besides the first woman interviewed, I don’t see the need for them to use English subtitles. I can understand the people very well. The firs lady sounded like she was speaking in a mixture of English and the native tongue, similar to Ni-Van Bislama.

    Life is changing fast in Solomon Islands due to a number of things,one of which is commercial logging. The Forestry Department have their side of the story but it seems that there is so much under table dealings by the commercial loggers. There are laws in place but the problem is the implementation .

  • @SkyHiltribe

    This is an unfortunate case of "you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don’t." On the plus side: logging generates short term wealth for the islanders as well as boosting the economy. Down side of long term effects: turned into Easter Island. Solution: creat sustainable logging through preserve/replanting trees.

    I wish outsiders do not name Solomons as headhunters.. Western Solomons is only a fraction of the islands..they were the headhunters. Malaita is
    a custom land. It depends on it's land and waters. Only a small area is used
    for subsistence farming..
    therefore saving its forests. Western ideals bring about the destruction of the native
    way of life.. thus the decline of forestries.
