- The FORBIDDEN love of Elizabeth I - Robert Dudley
Elizabeth 1 has gone down in history as being the Queen who never had children and never married. She was even dubbed the Virgin Queen.
The daughter of the tyrant, Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn, Elizabeth became something of a stark contrast to her father.
It is even said that even though Elizabeth had many potential suitors, she gave nothing more than fair words but no promises. There is only one man who has been recorded to have even slightly tempted her to share her crown. That man is Robert Dudley.
Join us as we look into Elizabeth and Roberts relationship and discuss the love Elizabeth felt for the man she could never marry.
Thanks for uploading. Love England’s history. With all the Titles they were people just like us with tribulations, hearts broken . Like the letters , castle ruins , so our mind can only imagine … One of my favorites Queens 👸
Greetings from Camarillo, California. 😊
I'm so thrilled I found your channel! You take a slightly angle which few historians do. I really love your work. Plus your voice is very soothing, but you also show compassion towards these characters. I've always respected historians who have a heart, like I do, when it comes to those who came and went far before we showed up here 😍
Thank you for your lovely comment. It makes making these videos and the time and effort worth it when I receive comments like this. So thank you 😊.
Totally agree! Love this channel so much!
I used to live in Kenilworth. It is wonderful to see the castle and its grounds again. I miss England.
Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all is all I could say about this love affair. Sad.
Dudley turned out to be pretty slimy
You would have liked for him to leave his own wife and marry Elizabeth?
Elizabeth's father did that, and even had wives murdered once he grew tired of them.
What if he was the one who murdered Amy.... would that have been alright too?
Geez.
I don't know about people in this comment section. 🙄
@@janicem9225 That's not what I said at all. That would go against my ethical code. What I meant was better that she _had_ a love than to have been loveless.
@@jamesaron1967
Oh, I'm sorry.
I completely misunderstood what you were saying.
I have that same code I also follow, and I'm so used to people saying that adultery and other wrong things are perfectly fine, and I thought that's what you were saying as well.
Sorry about that. 😳
@@janicem9225 No problem. I see how I may have been ambiguous and my comment could be interpreted several ways. Adultery is something that really infuriates me. Probably one of the reasons I never married. I could never forgive if it ever happened to me.
I feel sorry for Queen Elizabeth and Robert Dudley. Even though they couldn't marry and be together, he loved and remained loyal to her all his life. I hate how the movie depicted him as a traitor to Elizabeth when he never did any such thing.
Excellent!! Love England’s history .. greetings from Camarillo , California
Audio is so much better! I love your channel!
Maybe I lack ambition. If I was messing around with a queen, I would basically be very careful not to piss off a woman who could order my head chopped off.
Wonderful!
Elizabeth loved him truly and deeply. But he married again and again, even keeping mistresses on the side. I wish Elizabeth would have been happily married but that was not her destiny. She didn't had any children but she had an empire.
Ha ha she had as many as nine illegitimate children
@@UtubeAW how did you find this out
He married twice. The first as a teenager and Elizabeth attended his wedding. He got married to please his father or because of raging hormones or both. In any case, his marriage had nothing to do with Elizabeth. His second marriage came after years of loyal service to Elizabeth and the desire to have a son and heir and something of a family life. I don't really blame him since even Elizabeth shouldn't have expected him to live the life of a monk given she wouldn't marry him. On the other hand, maybe he should have picked someone other than her second cousin.
Regardless, she forgave him.
Edit: I've never heard that he had nine illegitimate children and I've been studying the lives of Elizabeth and Robin for over 50 years.
Poor Elizabeth!!! It's so sad to know all she gave up to be a Queen. A MIGHTY Queen at that. I hope she and her Robin met again.😢❤❤
If you can, get your hands on a copy of the novel, "Legacy" by Susan Kaye. It's an engrossing story of Elizabeth's life and focuses on her relationship with Dudley. It's marvelous, based on extensive historical research with just enough literary license to make the characters and situations come alive. Warning: the epilogue made me cry, but in a wonderful, cathartic way.
@@GoGreen1977 thank you so much. I'll definitely try and get my hands on a copy.
So very many romantics in this thread!
That Two are soulmates...amys wedding was a carnal marriage...
Queen of the realm by Jean Plaidy is the best book about the love of the Queen and her beloved Robert ........she loved him like no other but never sleep with him ...TY HRH for this
In other words, Elizabeth friend zoned him, to make it short
@@danteerskine7678 not necessarily friendzoning
she said that never slept with him.......that doesn't necessarily mean friendzoning
they could have embraced and kiss
you can be lovers without sleeping and having sex
@@fomalhauto in the present ERA, that's called friend zone
There were TWO men who came close to sharing Elizabeth’s crown. She was engaged to the second man, or so it is said. His name is on the tip of my tongue. Anyway, she used to call him her “frog.” They knew each other as children. He caught small pox, and belonged to the royal family in France (I think it was). It is said that Elizabeth finally did fall in love with him and decided to get married, but her council would not approve. She funded his maritime discoveries, but he left in disappointment after her final refusal. Does anyone remember his name?
He was Catherine Medici son
Alencon… some claims she also secretly plighted her troth to Edward DeVere but he was her son so I doubt that
Duke of Anjou
His name was Hercule and he was the last son of Henri II of France and Catherine de Medici.
Although Dudley didn't exactly reacted emotionally about most of Elizabeth's flirtatiousness, but that guy, Duke of Amjou really irritated him, I don't know why🤣🤣🤣
"Love." Please. Leicester and Elizabeth were carrying on while Leicester was still married to Amy Robsart. Leicester later went behind the back of the queen and involved himself with Lettice Knollys. He was pretending like his marriage didn't exist, to ingratiate himself with the queen. Amy's mysterious death, while convenient for Leicester, made a marriage with Elizabeth politically unviable. The scandal of his wife's death ensured Leicester would never be king. Once that path was closed to him, he did what any man would do when faced with the prospect of a sexless relationship with a woman: he pursued a different woman. As with the Earl of Essex (Knollys' son from her first marriage), an ambitious man exploited the queen's affections to empower and enrich himself. Leicester was the son of the Duke of Northumberland, the man who married his other son, Guildford, to Jane Grey and manipulated the royal succession to put his daughter-in-law on the throne. Northumberland's father was Edmund Dudley, a servant of Henry VII whose job was essentially to fleece English nobles and notables in order to expand the Tudor treasury. Leicester came from a line of ruthless men who practiced unfeeling power politics to advance themselves.
...and subsequently, lost their heads because of this manner of 'solving problems'. Robert did not, though.
omg patrick bateman… i agree
Not all true loves have fairytale journeys or endings. Given that Elizabeth never wanted to share her power, Robert was in a very challenging situation. And really, you are shocked that a powerful man in 16th Century had a mistress or (maybe) cheated on his wife that he had married as a teenager!! But in the end, he died loyal to Elizabeth, by her side, helping her prepare for the coming of the Armada. And when Robert died, shortly afterwards, Elizabeth was devastated. And when she died, her ministers found "His Last Letter" in her treasure box where she kept her most cherished keepsakes. I'd say they had a pretty old run as a couple.
This comment! ☝️
You're totally right on everything you said about Dudley.
He was a cad who cheated on his wife, and possibly had her murdered so he could be with a queen, and have unlimited power and prestige.
And I have to wonder about ole Liz being alright with that sort of behavior, and how much she really knew about Amy's death.
No wonder he died all alone in his hunting lodge, instead of in a palace..... karma had her fun with him in the end.
So many of the people in these comment sections make me wonder about them, as do the presenters on these videos.
I have to wonder how many of them are just as unscrupulous as the people like Dudley, being talked about in the videos.
@@GoGreen1977
Not ALL people back then had mistresses or "misters" (since I don't know what you call a male mistress.) Lol
And these people were supposed to be so devout, and the Bible actually states that you shall not commit adultery....so they were actually breaking a cardinal commandment.
So much for them being so devout back then.
And just because everyone else is doing something, doesn't mean it's ok.
Sort of like the saying that "just because everyone else is jumping off a bridge, doesn't mean you should do it too." 😆
Sad , especialy for ' the son ' .....
Elizabeth was betrayed when her love married a head of lettuce..
🤣🤣🤣🤣
❤❤❤❤❤
It was said that Thomas Seymour made her pregnant when she was just a teenager. He was scandalous and poor Elizabeth fell in "love" with him.
really? so your saying there may be a tudor descendent out there in the world?
Yeah they think that baby was Edward DeVere
Elizabeth didn't get pregnant by Thomas Seymour or any man.
thomas seymour was molesting her.
@@GoGreen1977 I agree it’s most likely untrue she ever had a child, it would’ve been very difficult for her to hide it from everyone and I imagine one of the people close to Elizabeth would’ve mentioned in some historical document that she was pregnant.
Falling in love in prison. Go figure!
Hey, just a heads up, it's not pronounced "Lettice" but "Letisha", lol!! She's not a vegetable!!! Lol
Those big puffy dresses the Queen wears in those portraits , must have been so HOT 🔥🥵 TO WEAR!!
Luckily the UK is a rainy county 🤭
You should try wearing an Elizabethan corset! But they were living during the Little Ice Age so the layers of velvet were probably great
Dudley was quite the snake in the grass wasn’t he. And Elizabeth’s ailments seemed similar to Mary’s (I) ailments (ie swollen abdomen) The tudors did not seem to have strong fertility.
We find it hysterical that the courts of Europe and in England would spread evil rumors that Elizabeth was having an affair with her master of horse! Every European Kingdom and every King had numerous affairs and numerous Mistresses especially in France and Spain!!
Their minds were so focused on what they were doing which was evil that they couldn't bear the fact that Elizabeth was still a virgin!
She may have at some point agreed to marry him if he agreed to renounce a crown of his own but he was so selfish that he married without Elizabeth's permission, twice! After his last wife was found dead at the foot of the stairs of course Elizabeth had no choice but to refuse to marry him ever!
He married once secretly and Dudley didn't need her permission. He waited for years for Elizabeth to finally say "yes.", but she couldn't or wouldn't for so many reasons. After waiting decades, he finally married Lettice Knollys, her second (third?) cousin and had a legitimate son, something he had hoped for since his marriage to Amy Robsart. Sadly, his son died young. His illegitimate son, also Robert, went on to accomplish extraordinary things, but primarily in Italy, because he couldn't prove his parentswere ever married and he left England. Robert Dudley was between a rock and a hard place in his relationship with Elizabeth. So was Elizabeth. He didn't take an oath to live a life of celibacy and he NEVER betrayed her in a political sense as shown in the movie "Elizabeth" with Cate Blanchett. That was an insult to his reputation.
Robert Dudley was a diversion, a facade. E. I
had a child by Roger Ascham, her tutor. Child was raised by Lord and Lady Bacon; named Frances Bacon.
Or, as they have been lead to believe... William Shakespeare.
Hope all is well?
