Holding Company is one of my favorite songs from Linkin Park. I think it's unfinished despite having a lot of potential, and if I had to pick, it wouldn't even cut my top 30 songs from the band. But I adore it for a whole other reason: It inspires me. Because this eventually turned into Lost In The Echo. I was a much younger girl when I fell in love with music through this band, and I did it, not just through their music, but through their 'making of' videos. It taught me things about creativity and the creative process that I still heavily uses. The main thing: It's ok to change things, don't get too attached to that thing you're making and don't ever be afraid to just change it. The fact that this somehow turned into Lost In The Echo is absolutely astounding. And even more is the fact that it's not because it needed to be changed, but because it's just the way creating things work. If the first demo of Lost In The Echo was pretty much the version we got on the album? It would've changed dramatically as well. It might've even turned into a refined version of Holding Company, with lyrics and all. Because of the nature of the creative process, things will be changed. Because as an artist, you love your work through what it took to get to this point, and not the final result. You love that song you made, that game you built, that book you wrote, that art you drew, because of what it was and could've been, but ended up being. If you go in and set your mind on making a very specific thing, and you don't allow it to naturally change because you put your ego into it, you will fail to make something you truly love. That's not to say you shouldn't ever set out to do something specific, just that you should remain openminded and let whatever happens, happen. You can make something that people will percieve as being the best thing you've ever done in a few hours, but would it even be satisfying to you, the artist? Probably not. Making things is not about what comes out of it. Being comfortable with trying things that don't work, with spending sometimes weeks of work on something, only to decide: _"Hey, you know what? I prefer a version of that I did way earlier."_ is not part of the process, it is the process. Just make sure to never delete anything, archive everything. That thing you did but ended up hating, you may be able to come back to it someday and make it something powerful and wonderful.
Man, watching the rest of the band go "I like the vibe but the melody needs to change" must have been killer, even after so many years working with them and expecting it.
They are phenomenal absolutely they had a special creativity and way of doing things and excellent changes and ideas, but not the best? Ok that’s your opinion, they’re the best for me and fans.
+Victimized watch making of the living things! You will see when they are talking about holding company later on it says lost in the echo. The same thing will be for burn it down. They talk and say that songs change in the proces. A lot can change in a year
@@MercuryEV Well the description says it’s from 2011, and someone’s comment says it’s a demo for Lost in the Echo (which makes sense because the lyrics fit perfectly into this). But I had the same thought as OP when I first listened to this; it sounds so much like Iridescent

great demo. 2:55 best part imo, it has a nostalgic, emotional kind of feel to it.
