Some of these are actually very good calls. Rizzo and Diaz both blatantly leaned into those HBP’s. You can literally see Diaz watching to make sure he’s positioning his elbow in the way of the ball.
I'm 77 and I grew up on baseball. I have never seen so many missed calls. Like today umpire missed. Even our little league umpires were better than the MLB Umpire of today's
Honestly, the fact they have that balls and strikes box for every pitch on TV may be a factor in our perception that that umpiring is especially/uniquely bad now(and of course watching 5 entertaining baseball UA-cam channels talking about the bad calls plays in lot that perception too;)). Again, The strike Zone on TV, Replay on everything, etc it just amplifies so many missed calls. I totally agree umpiring is so bad right now. I guess what I’m Saying is maybe when we watched baseball pre 2015(or whenever they started putting up the strike zone on Tv and then of course replay the last few years) we didn’t realize how bad the umpires were in the past. I bet it was wayyyy worse! Just imagine this……You Put the ball/strike, smart computer, TV zone/analytics/replay etc that we see on every MLB televised game now on , for example, hmmmm, let’s say a random Tom Glavine start in…1996. Okay, can you imagine how many balls 1-2 inches off the plate he got called strikes by the ump that weren’t? I don’t know the answer, but I bet it’s a lot… Or, another thought, it’s just a Random Sunday 1pm game game in mid July umped in 1994 by a Joe West/Eric Gregg looking/type umpire and they are behind the plate in Kansas City where it’s 100+ and humid. Or, maybe something like the old Veterans stadium(RIP the Vet)in Philly when on the turf, in the hottest days of summer, would be a 120 degrees on the field. Ok, imagine if we scrutinized them and their performance on these days standards, my money would say they would be so bad you’d be shocked. I used unique examples here, but you get what I’m saying. But who knows, it’s just a hunch and a thought. I’m Rambling, but maybe it’s not as bad as we think :)
Best part of these videos is trying to figure out if the reaction from the casters comes from actual blatant umpiring mistakes or just them misinterpreting human errors viewed through the lenses of the casters being fans of the home team.
I did a little bit of little league umpiring when I was in high school. Those low balls over the plate that may or may not be knee-high are very difficult to judge. You just can't get a great angle on them.
You are correct sir about the low pitches. Two dimensional view. The higher pitches out of the zone should be easier to be more accurate, but the Umps vision is not following the ball after his brain takes the "picture". The "English" on the ball moves it out of the zone. Both issues can be remedied by technology.
Also known as: "Reasons why umpires need to be replaced by automated systems for calling balls and strikes" or "Making the case for umpire performance review by players and managers."
Instant replay on the Jumbotron with the digital technology- NFL gave coaches a method to challenge, why not make it available. Instant read replay. Keep it fair, accurate and help eliminate the human factor.
We have the technology to eliminate these bad calls, relieving the umpires from calling balls and strikes. It would be interesting to see the stats on bad calls for each team in the game to reveal any favoritism.
If only there was some sort of on field technology available that could "bleep" conformation in the umpire's ear when there is a "close" call. Perhaps call it Hawkeye or something, implying its accuracy in tracking the flight or pathway of a ball.
I may start watching again if that happens. I quit when they did not reverse the horrible call at first base during game 6 of the Cardinals/Royals World Series.
This is crazy and getting ridiculous! These umpires are absolutely nuts! Now the umpires are widening the strike zone?! If that’s the case then maybe the mlb should do it or have a huge talk with all the umpires about it!
The umps should be fired immediately after the game is reviewed. The calls were so blatant that is questions of money is being exchanged. Also catchers should be thrown out of the game if the frame the pitch or interfere or attempt to interfere with the batter.
The judges are showing off their privileges like the American police. Judges who swallow the excitement of the audience as well as the players are disappearing in Korea. The AI referee (ABS) will judge the ball. And other controversial decisions minimize misjudgment by video reading. They know better how many misjudgment the judges have. Referee? Referee?? It's rotten!!
Take the first four people come through the gates at any major league stadium and have them umpire the game. dollars to donuts that would be a better game
HIALRIOUS. Most of this video is just believing in the dumb superimposed strike zone..but then when a pitch is shown touching the box an called a strike, you STILL say it was a bad call?
They will still have umps for check swings and plays at the plate, they will wear an earpiece that gets the balls and strikes call in real time. ⚾️⚾️⚾️ #NoMoreAngelHernandez
Some of the clips are old and well known, but behind the plate hasn't improved since. Too much reliance on framing is making the calls ridiculous. Hell most umps are leaning on the catcher, but still manage to miss if the ball crosses the plate, if at all or the depth to the pitch. Too early for using tech, but maybe new blood in training younger umpires.
The entire reason why umpires keep doing this is because they have no accountability. The umpire tosses someone out on a missed call should be a three-game suspension of the umpire upon review. Your strike zone call ability should be similar: Have a lower grade of calls over a game and you’re sent back to umpire school or docked your pay and not allowed to work important games in the postseason. Baseball is between two baseball teams, not two teams with a wildly variable umpire who has no accountability.
All MLB umpires are crooked and make bets on the games they call, I know a bookie who took big bets from umpires for years if he wrote a book MLB would be shocked.
Not gonna lie, the umps overall do a much better job than I would. That being said, they should use automatic balls and strikes using the tech we have.
@@678rwhp If the umpires were adults they would review their bad calls so they can admit and correct them. When the kid refuses to admit error the adult sometimes needs to use strong language to help reality print inside the kid's brain.
@@678rwhp No it's not. That's why umpires can't qualify as adults when they send out a player for simply telling them their strike call on a ball that was miles away is the worst call of all times.
Those four strike calls beginning @5:14 were absolutely ridiculous, among the worst calls is history. I wish they'd said who was behind the plate for each of these. I'm wondering if Angel Hernandez was involved in many of them. Umpires are supposed to been unseen in the background of the game, but more and more the game is becoming about them.
Too much testosterone on display from both umpires and players. Given that TV can identify whether or not a ball is in the strike zone, why a message not sent to the umpire's ear-piece stating strike or ball? It would save all these theatrics.
The “why is he safe?” Call will resonate forever
As a Rizzo fan and certified ump hater, the Rizzo and Diaz calls were the right calls.
Some of these are actually very good calls. Rizzo and Diaz both blatantly leaned into those HBP’s. You can literally see Diaz watching to make sure he’s positioning his elbow in the way of the ball.
I love when even the announcers say how bad of a call it was
Really? You think announcers know anything about the rules or umpiring in general? 99% of announcers are clueless.
Rizzo 100% leaned into that pitch. It may have hit him anyway if he had just stood there, but he definitely made it obvious.
So did Diaz. You can literally see him on the replay watching to make sure he’s moving his elbow pad in the path of the ball.
5:14 That ump made Angel Hernandez look like the best pitch caller there ever was.
I have not watch a full game in a great many years. I am glad they are using new tech to expose the bad umps.
The game has become more about the umpires than the players.

I swear sometimes umpires be drinking before games 😅
The Yankee absolutely moved into the path of that pitch.
Glad to see Angel Hernandez has a "Best Of" video.

Watching these calls you would have to guess that the umps are betting on the outcome.
Time to get rid of umps calling balls and strikes. The tech is already there, let it be in charge.
Not every call contested should be considered bad. Still…some of these were seriously questionable as to how could they have been so far wrong.
Rizzo leaned into that pitch. That was a good call.
No he thought it was a different pitch and thought it was going behind him.
No. It was a breaking ball. A recent previous fastball went behind him not long before.
I am really surprised none of these guys have caught one of the refs after the game and gave them an attitude adjustment
Or the fans
I'm not - that'd be a lifetime ban and jail time over a missed call.
The millions they get paid can soothe a lot of frustration.

All proud graduates of the Angel Hernandez school of umpiring 🤣🤣🤣
folks.....this isn't brain surgery. we do not need umpires
Also known as: "Reasons why umpires need to be replaced by automated systems for calling balls and strikes" or "Making the case for umpire performance review by players and managers."
The referee is almost like a gangster. Professional baseball with no fair play and no sportsmanship?? I'm just laughing~^^

Liván Hernández and Eric Gregg, a black eye on baseball.
Clearly, the fix was in. There's no other explanation. Those pitches weren't anywhere close.
We have the technology to eliminate these bad calls, relieving the umpires from calling balls and strikes. It would be interesting to see the stats on bad calls for each team in the game to reveal any favoritism.
The Phillies vs astros clip was the right call because he did lean into it
If only there was some sort of on field technology available that could "bleep" conformation in the umpire's ear when there is a "close" call. Perhaps call it Hawkeye or something, implying its accuracy in tracking the flight or pathway of a ball.
Why don't any players jack up the umps after a bad call? I'm sure they could afford the fine & how long could the suspension be?
One day soon it will all be cameras and robots and the umpires will be a thing of the past.
I may start watching again if that happens. I quit when they did not reverse the horrible call at first base during game 6 of the Cardinals/Royals World Series.
If they keep screwing up then yes it will come to that and they will have only themselves to blame.
Umps would still be there but to only call safe or out and checked swings or not and add fouls in it
This video suggests quite clearly that they are earning their possible redundancy!
Angel moment
Honestly can't get over the A's fan at a dodgers/padres game
Someone would think these Umps got a lot of money running on these games.
What would Pete Rose say? Lol
This is crazy and getting ridiculous! These umpires are absolutely nuts! Now the umpires are widening the strike zone?! If that’s the case then maybe the mlb should do it or have a huge talk with all the umpires about it!
The Giants vs Dodgers 2021 NLDS was horrible way to end a great series between the 2 best teams in baseball that year
The Yankee hit by a pitch, I'd have called the same thing. He leaned his leg forward in a way that didn't look like part of a swing.
Those cubs jerseys are fire
Most of these are just idiots who actually think the silly on screen strike zone is accurate.
So far.. imo, . 1:04 looks like a good strike, right across the numbers. 1:22 good strike, right over the plate above the knees...
Wonder how many of these calls were the umpires helping the other team?
The more they use the box to show bad calls they will eventually use it to make calls.
At the 3:00 mark - why didn't the batter try running to first? He grounded the ball to the third baseman.
9:49 the thing is that was the last out needed for a PERFECT GAME and the ump was just praying on the pitcher’s downfall I guess.
That ump actually apologized to the pitcher the next day, and admitted he made a big mistake
This should be renamed angel Hernandez highlights
I thought this was gonna be an angel hernandez compilation
8:39
What a ridiculous call.
1st base picked the runners leg off the base.
That’s blatantly wrong.
The quality of not only baseball umpires but football refs as well has brought a plethora of bad calls due to almost total incompetence.
Idk a lot of these were close and sometimes correct calls. Yeah there are plenty of terrible ones but not all of these are bad calls.
Good call at 10:30 but I am not use to MBA pitch speeds. I am a NFHS umpire. The only question could he try to move out of the way on a 96mph ball.
Not much to react at hs level too. I tell hs school level the s
Slightest of movements is an hbp
Electronic strike zone cant come fast enough,

Well from what I’ve heard at least ANGEL has retired🤦♂️
If the box wasn;t there would there be this much discussion?
Bring on the computer umpires...
That Yanier Díaz call was correct
The play at 4:00 isnt home plate umpires fault but third base umpires
It's a wonder why none of these players ,in the heat of the moment don't beat the umpire for the bad calls.
Take the first four people come through the gates at any major league stadium and have them umpire the game. dollars to donuts that would be a better game
Umpires' have been horrible for the pas 20 years, some calls just terrible.
So, the question is: Who "umpires" the umpires? Some of those "strike" calls were clearly wrong! That level of umpiring demoralizes a team.
POV little league umps
Are umps ever make to look at their bad calls after a game and asked ….what the hell were you thinking
Umpires are such winers, throw players out for almost nothing. I don’t want to see AI but the umps need to be double checked more often.
I like they have the power to make terrible strike out calls and then throw people out of the game for not liking their wrong calls
Umpires were Bolognas!
Blind justice. Blind umpires.
HIALRIOUS. Most of this video is just believing in the dumb superimposed strike zone..but then when a pitch is shown touching the box an called a strike, you STILL say it was a bad call?
How are these umpires NOT penalized somehow?
why does the guy behind the catcher always make a throwing move after a ball that wasnt hit

That black home plate umpire calling the outside strikes is embarrassing
If players can be suspended why can't umpires?
One word...union
Umpires can be suspended
they can and have been suspended
I hate baseball as the umpires have ruined the game . They have heads so big they have to turn sideways to go thru doorways. So sad.
So , what happens to these umpires?
This is just crazy how many umps are bad

A clip reel showing how games are rigged.
So 10 minutes of bad calls across multiple years means umpires are terrible? They're human and get things wrong just like we do.
Umpires ruined baseball for me. Can't watch games won and lost by dudes who suck at their jobs.
These umpires need glasses or retirement!
