On 31 January 1943, 1st Lieutenant Jefferson J. DeBlanc led a group of F4F Wildcats over the Japanese-held Kolombangara island. The group was on an escort mission for a strike force of 12 Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bombers sent to attack Japanese shipping. DeBlanc reported that he had a serious fuel leak, and soon he and his wingman, Sgt. Jim Feliton had to leave the group and then to push into the battle against superior enemy forces: 2 American Wildcats vs 10 Nakajima Oscars. Forced to ditch, DeBlanc had to face terrors from the depths of the ocean and from the jungle.

I love this channel

Okay, good vid, but why would he be afraid of jaguars in the Pacific? There are no big cats, jaguars or otherwise, in the Pacific islands.

Yeah honestly the graphics keep getting better

Truly it is indeed
It’s better than a movie studio
The Filipino Dub took me off guard lmao! As a Filipino, this makes me proud! Awesome job Yarnhub!
Eyy, pinoy who likes history!
Sa philipinas pala nangyari Yan hahaha
Haha kala ko ako lang pilipino nanunuod neto HAHAHA mga kabayan!
This is grossly inaccurate as Kolombangara is not part of the Philippines. Speaks volumes how many Filipinos can't be bothered to take a quick glance at a map or do a 5 second Google search.

BRO AINT NO WAY THEY SPEAK TAGALOG! I QUICKLY UNDERSTOOD THE FIRST SPEECH OF THE VOICE ACTOR AND WAS FILLED WITH HAPPINESS AND JOY AND SURPRISE! I LOVE YOU YARNUB! ❤️

The fact that this video is getting the number of views in the time it has been out is a testament to the quality of this channel.
Trying to get my grandma into this channel since she the daughter of a ww2 vet and absolutely love the quality of the videos
The people of Kolombangara island DO NOT speak TAGALOG. TAGALOG is the basis for the FILIPINO national language. TAGALOG is mostly spoken in the island of LUZON in the PHILIPPINES. Please make the necessary correction. Otherwise, people who knows how to speak FILIPINO will be laughing at this video.
They said Louisiana
@@emilio1969laughing is the best medicine 💊
@@emilio1969 Yea I was going to say the same thing. As a Filipino, I'm so happy to get the shout out but also, the natives have their own culture and language which should be represented.
Still, as always, the videos are great! Something to improve on next time for Yarnhub
That spear must now for sure be an amazing heirloom in his family. Not many can say they brought back a highly decorated spear from their times during WW2.
Once more Yarnhub spoils us with one amazing story.
Evidently it’s at the National WW2 museum with his moh now
Btw do you know if he ever visited the island ever again and met with the locals again after the war?
@@happyomatic1328 no idea, would be interesting though
"If this is a one way ticket, so be it."..... man, show what these people are really made of. Staring death in the eyes and grinned.
You'd be surprised how often we [myself and other, much better men I knew who served in combat over various wars] adopt that attitude. There comes a point of time where you no longer fear the outcome- other people depend on you to survive, and you'd like to think... well, you have to think, that they feel the same way about you.
Whether it is protecting bombers or throwing man after man into the line of fire to raise the odds of survival for a wounded friend, I've always said "you don't know who you really are unless you're willing to die for a 'maybe.'"
@@thesmirkingwolf U guys are heroes in my eyes.
"We're all scared. You hid in that ditch because you think there's still hope. But Blithe, the only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier's supposed to function. Without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it."
That spear, while being worth little material wise, holds such a profound significance that I genuinely hope he kept it and has it in a safe, secure location
I guess the question isn't whether or not he kept it safe, but whether or not the Navy decided to use bureaucracy to take it away from him...
Bro didn’t have jungle experience but came from Louisiana? Must’ve been a city boy
Nah the swamps in Louisiana are close enough.

A jungle and a swamp isn't nearly the same. America has 0 jungles. However jungles do have swamps but a swamp in the US isn't in any jungle because there are none. Only US jungle would be in Puerto Rico, but thats ok we dont need experience as we have the south for the swampy jungles, alaskans for the cold, midwest and west coast for about anything else thats needing to be dealt with, combine all that together you got one diverse country with people who can deal with weather as hot as the desert to weather as cold as an ice pack in the freezer, oh and don't forget many of us do know how to traverse the mountains to.
I like how Yarn went from 2D paper-like animations (i really liked the one on lauri torni) to basically just making movies.
My father served in the same theater of operations, and he also passed away in 2007. I had every WWII Pacific Theater fighter plane model both Japanese, and American. Dad bought me my first 3 models on my 7th birthday. I still have most of these. This is the first time I heard this story, very nicely presented. Thank you.
He is a brave heart...Hope he visited those natives later for their hospitality

source from wikipidia:
Jefferson Joseph DeBlanc (February 15, 1921 - November 22, 2007) was an American World War II Marine Corps fighter pilot and flying ace, credited with shooting down nine Japanese aircraft during two tours of duty in the Pacific at Guadalcanal and Okinawa. On January 31, 1943, despite mechanical problems with his aircraft, he pressed forward with a mission and shot down five Japanese aircraft in minutes before being shot down himself. DeBlanc parachuted to safety and was rescued by native islanders, traded for a sack of rice, and picked up by a Navy seaplane. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions that day. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve until 1972. In that time, he also taught school and completed graduate and doctoral degrees in math, physics and education.

I've heard of this guys story thanks to an episode of "Dogfights" were Deblanc himself was interviewed. He was a really fascinating character even into his golden years. RIP Deblanc. You were quite the character.
Deblanc said he always knew what he was worth after this. One ten pound sack of rice.
@@daleupthegrove6396---Yeah. That's part of what made him fascinating.
When the tagalog speaking natives started talking it shocked me. I understand them even without subtitles and all. Great job yarnhub!! And thank you for featuring the unique stories of these heroic individuals who fought in ww2
I was so confused when the video started and it wasn't the same ol' narrator's voice that I'm so used to but another voice in my mother tongue. 😂😂
It just shows the level of quality this channel has achieved 🎉
It’s crazy how far you’ve come with these animations, they’re amazing

It's astonishing how far you guys have come! From choppy, low detail animations, to triple-A studio tier animation and voice acting.
It's beautiful... The voice acting keeps getting better!
Yay
Just when I thought the stories or the graphics couldn’t keep topping off the prior video. I already said they need to make a full feature movie. The voice acting is also top notch. Keep it up folks.
The homage you pay to our Veterans is heart-warming. Keep doing what you do best and I will always be here.
This channel really is the best, it gets every accent right. Those Filipino voices and words are very spot on, like very very spot on. Even the hospitality and kindness of Filipinos are excellently displayed. And these are coming from a Filipino myself. Outstanding Work Yarnhub! Keep it up my man.
After a quick research these aren't supposedly Filipinos. Solomon Islands are not part of the Philippine Archipelago but I understand it maybe hard for them to get actual native speakers to act so, this is forgivable.
Plus I love their videos.
The Filipino voices are spot on, because they're literally using Filipino voice actors😭 Even the mic quality is so Filipino
@@balaysalidathey must have made a mistake or the natives are Filipino some how because they said they use a bolo knife which is a traditional Filipino o weapon
@@Some_dude_from_hawaii My best bet is that this was narrated from the Pilot's side which they were taught that the locals used sabres called bolo. When he got stranded he identified it as bolo instead of what the local name for that is. Which I understand because you don't go around knowing what are sabres called from whatever.
And I assume that the researcher googled what bolo is, so he thought it must be Filipino. Therefore the natives speaks Tagalog.
It’s 3 am fuck sleeping I’m staying up till it starts
Bet your asleep
Same here.
As you should
Yet a beautiful masterpiece. Shall never be forgotten…. To many masterpieces and the original masterpiece that started it all will be forgotten.
I don't understand why Solomon Natives suddenly speaked Filipino but i was so shocked on how good the voice acting was❤
I saw an extended interview with 1st Lieutenant DeBlanc. This video about him is very accurate. As a measure of his bravery, he knew when he launched off that day he would not make it back because of the fuel leak, but continued on knowing he'd be bailing out over water. He told the flight to watch for his raft on their flight back. He later said he continued on in the mission rather than turn back because his job was to protect the bombers. It was that simple, and that brave. Jefferson DeBlanc is a legend amongst combat aviators.
Way to put exposition in the dialogue. Phenomenal work and so accurate!
Man your grafic style gets better and better with every video. Props for that!

Bravo Yarnhub, Bravo!!!!!
CRAZY realism and animation
I subscribed to this channel 3 years ago I thaught your animation was awesome but now the quality is 10x better every upload is like a short movie certain points I can't even tell it's animated it looks so amazing
Wow. Just wow
The quality is just insane
I mean the sound design, animation, graphics, camera direction, the everything!
Though i just have one little critique, while i do love hearing my mother tougne on a yarnhub video the filipino they speak is a very modern version with spanish loan words, something natives wouldn't have learned, and while tagalog is a very common language, I doubt they would've spoken it compared to the hundreds of dialects...
...and just realised he probably didnt land over the philippines either, i mean finding a native marshallese isnt easy, plus the filipino is probably just an easter egg, yarnhub does take a lot of liberties in the dialog, i bet everyone had fun doing this episode
Again, never disappointed by this channel. Such stories SHOULD be told to the young folks of this modern era.
What a wonderful video!
The growth from the 2d animations in the eric whitmen video to the realistic animations today is insane keep up the good work.
