Amazing machines steam locomotives, all they want to do is kill you, they can crush you, burn you to death, high pressure steam can cut you in two, but you tame it all and you can make it do what you want.
The diesel is there primarily to generate electricity for the coach cars. Big Boy has no generators able to do this. It was made for freight. I don't believe it is used for power at all, and I doubt braking either with such a small train.
I guess compared to when that locomotive was new, they cleaned up its act. The steam coming from the cylinders at the sides of it just smells like water being boiled in an iron pot. You don’t get any distinct smell from the exhaust because of pressured oil injection for a cleaner fire for the boiler compared to coal, and it also looks like the vent excess steam pressure into the exhaust to also help control it.
When it was in revenue service the smoke smelled like burnt coal because it was originally designed as a coal burning engine. During the rebuild to return it to service, it has been modified to burn fuel oil.
Skip to 1:50 to avoid my shaky handheld camera work… It’s not fun holding a camera with the zoom lens on in 20-degree wind.
That shot at Texarkana is awesome! The light was nearly perfect!
That's a real steam

Does diesel locomotive which pulled with 4014 helps her pushs and pulls?
It is for dynamic breaking only and for extra crew, or if needed.
Also for insurance as well but mostly to spare the EXPENSIVE break shoes of Big Boy.

@@jesseusgrantcanales dynamic braking can be done by Big Boy. The diesel electric is there primarily for "insurance", in case the steamer breaks down.
@@timgreen4137 Uh last I checked Steamers never had dynamic breaking, only old fashioned breakshoes on wheels.
@@jesseusgrantcanales Reverser lever, and apply throttle. Not full throttle, but some throttle. Steam engineers told me about it.
Is Big Boy going on tracks anywhere near Clovis New Mexico on the way to. Fort Worth? Nice video!
Big Boy will not go near Clovis.
Thanks
It’s coming south through Oklahoma.
